Description
London: Macmillan, 1966. From the Bart Auerbach Collection. Spine a trifle soiled, front cover slightly bowed, else a very good copy. 8vo. Original orange cloth; pictorial dust jacket. First edition of this satirical novel about a scientist and the bureaucratic infighting he encounters. The dedication copy to Pamela Hansford Johnson, fellow English writer and the wife of C. P. Snow, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Dearest Pam – wonderful woman & excellent writer! With love from Harry. 4 May 1966." The dedicatee was one of Cooper's closest literary friends. (For further comment on this important association see Malcolm Bradbury's essay on Cooper in 'Contemporary Novelists.') Cooper also wrote a biography of her husband, the scientist and novelist C. P. Snow. (BA).
