Description
Sacramento, CA: James J. Ayers, Supt. State Printing, 1884. Hardcover. Advance presentation copy; 9 x 6; pp. 304; brick-red cloth over boards; gilt title to front board; a bit of rubbing to tips of spine and corners; first blank leaf trimmed; thin strips of paper loss to top and bottom edges of ffep (insect nibbles); text mostly very clean; overall in very good- condition. Presentation plate to front board verso, printed and with a manuscript name filled-in (appears to be in William Hall's hand): "This volume is sent to 'Hon. T. H. McDonald' as an exhibit of the character of the Report in progress and of the style in which it is proposed to publish it. It being unfinished, there are no copies for general distribution." The book, presented to California State Senator T. H. McDonald, was written by the first State Engineer of California and designer of Golden Gate Park William Hammond Hall (1846 - 1934). Born in Hagerstown, MD, Hall served with the Army Corps of Engineers during the Civil War and after that, in the late 1860s, received an assignment as a surveyor and topographer of the Western regions of the country. In 1870, Hall was commissioned to survey the site for San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and, eventually, to design it. He would become its first Superintendent. He was appointed as the first State Engineer of California in 1878 and would, subsequently, develop a seminal, state-wide, water resource and irrigation plan, which would serve as a national model. The current publication was prepared in advance of a large, multi-volume work on irrigation, chiefly concerning California, and contained a "table of contents" of the entire series, as well as papers on the "Irrigation Legislation and Administration" of the Romans, the French, and the Italians - for comparative studies.
