Spine and portion of front cover faded, the latter also spotted
Description
London: Heinemann, 1943. From the Bart Auerbach Collection. Spine and portion of front cover faded, the latter also spotted. 8vo. Original dark blue cloth. First edition. A dedication copy "To Hugh ['Binkie'] Beaumont, the play's producer, inscribed by the playwright on the front free endpaper: "For Hugh from Noel Coward." (...all Noel's plays had been presented in England since 1939 [and through the war years] by H. M. Tennent Ltd. [which] was exemplified in the attractive, persuasive, amusingly talkative person of Binkie' Beaumont. Violent and occasional business flare-ups excepted, Noel and Binkie were more than friends: they were the deepest, closest cronies..." (Cole Lesley, 'Remembered Laughter: The Life of Noel Coward', NY, 1976, p. 287). It was Beaumont who had persuaded Coward to return to the stage to act in a trio of plays - This Happy Breed was one - after the latter's nervous breakdown in 1937. Another dedication copy to Beaumont of This Happy Breed was in the sale of Masterpieces of Modern Literature: The Library of Richard Rechler, Christie's, NY, 11 October 2002, lot 54. It was inscribed by Coward, also on the front free endpaper: "For Binkie with love from Noel / See Dedication dear Hugh." (BA).

Description
New York: Julien Levy Gallery, 1939. Single sheet, folded as issued. Reproducing a drawing by Cornell on one side (titled "Bilboquet") and text of verso. Printed blue on white. Mild wear. Very good or better overall. Scarce exhibition announcement for Joseph Cornell's second show, held seven years after his first, also at the Julien Levy Gallery. Levy's 57th Street location was in many ways ground zero for Surrealism, Dada, and experimental film in the States and his gallery mounted important exhibitions by Duchamp, Ernst, Magritte, Kahlo, as well as Cornell, throughout the 1930s and 40s. Includes a text by the artist's friend Parker Tyler, who according to Cornell biographer Deborah Solomon likely "gave Cornell the impetus to exhibit his work again after such a long hiatus. Their friendship appears to have enabled Cornell to muster renewed confidence in his art" (UTOPIA PARKWAY p. 102). And the exhibit itself was groundbreaking, arranged so that visitors entered "a small sitting room designed by the artist to resemble a walk-in fairy tale. The lights were turned down, and thimbles, dolls, and bits of broken glass could be found both in and out of shadow boxes. In other words, the room itself was a work of art — a box in its own right — and remains an unsung forerunner of installation art" (ibid, 105). No copies located in OCLC, and we do not find an example among Cornell's papers at the Smithsonian — though there does appear to be one among Levy's papers at U. Penn. Rare ephemera from an early and important event in Cornell's career. [Daniel A. Starr #229 in JOSEPH CORNELL, McShine, Kynaston (editor, MoMA 1990)].

Description
Butler County, PA, 1828. Folio, 16" x 10" 292 pages bound in worn half leather [front board detached]. Some pages contain notes on smaller paper, affixed with straight pins, relating to cases. The disposition of each case is detailed, with names of hundreds of inhabitants. An excellent primary resource for law and commercial activity in the first third of the 19th century in western Pennsylvania. Very Good. William Campbell [1772-1828, born in Franklin County PA, moved to Butler County in 1803. He established himself as a carpenter. A local leader in the Democratic Party, he was elected county sheriff in 1809, treasurer in 1813; Justice of the Peace / Prothonotary of the 3rd District in 1813 and of the 4th District in 1822; county clerk in 1815 and 1830; and served as County Auditor for a time. His notebook begins in 1820 and ends in 1828, the year of his death. The entries are primarily for the disposition of cases, most of which deal in some way with debt. An entry from March 1825 [page 114] notes the case of Commonwealth vs. Pittsburgh and Butler Turnpike Managers (Case 464): "Warrant on Complaint of Alexander Hagerty and Abraham Neyman [?] for the Examination of the road from the gate kept by Thomas Lyon to the gate kept by Nathan Sheer to see if finished agreeable to the act of assembly report made on oath of John Welsh Robert Carswell and John Sullivan. Case dismissed March 10, 1825. Copy of Judgment handed to Mr. Sheer March 12, 1825. Copy of D[ismissal?] handed by Mr. Lerman to Thos. Lyon [March] 14, 1825." A list of costs indicates "entry 6.00, oath 12.00, warrant 18.00 etc." Some local names include: Jacob Binker, an Assistant County Burgess in 1826, 1839, 1840; and County District Attorney in 1830. John Galbreath, lawyer who went on to establish the Butler Palladium, the first newspaper in the county; later served as a judge in Erie County, PA. Norbert Foltz was a wealthy man and one of the largest land owners in the county; worked as a cabinet maker and then became a tavern keeper; was an Assistant County Burgess in 1821, 1824, 1826 and 1827; and in 1822 was on committee to build the German Catholic Church. Dr. George Miller, Assistant County Burgess 1817, 1818, 1838; County Commissioner in 1840; and County Treasurer for a time. Adam Funk was a local merchant who served as an Assistant County Burgess in 1828. Other names mentioned in its pages are Alexander Hagerty, Abraham Meyman, Thomas Lyon, Nathan Sheer, Robert Carswell, John Sullivan, David Scott, George Scott, William Stewart, Thomas McLeary, Patrick Brieland, A.L. Purvience, John Higley, Alexander Marten, William Dickey, Thomas Wolfson, Malachi Richardson, William Barren, Richard Miller, and many more.

Description
Chicago: Lakeside Press, 1913. First Edition. Small Octavo. 137p. A remarkable association copy inscribed by two prominent Chicagoans: Thomas E. Donnelley, President of Lakeside Press to William A. Dyche, who became Mayor of Evanston and was instrumental in getting the elevated train from Chicago to that city. His huge contributions contributed to North Western's Dyche Field (later renamed in 1997 as Ryan Field). He was also publisher of the City Directory where both he and Thomas E. Donnelley were prominent. It was Donnelley, of course, whose Lakeside Press provided reprints of the most significant classics on not only Illinois but the American West. These books were then given to good customers and employees at Christmas. Bound in olive green cloth centrally stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, were to spine ends, both hinges cracked but in heavy custom mylar jacket for further protection.
