Social history - An archive of approximately 398 billheads relating to the running of Hawkswood, a large country estate in Newburyport MA 1895-97. The estate belonged to David Wallace and his wife Ruth, who was the widow of Hopper Mott, a prominent New York City family. Categories include: 82 receipts for Food including -Extensive monthly receipts for fish, pork and meat -Weekly and/or monthly receipts for general groceries, fruits, vegetables, milk, butter and cheese. Mostly from different vendors, Liquor and wine bills 59 receipts for Utilities, Water bills, Coal, Wood & Coke, Ice, Electric Light, Heat and Power Co. 72 receipts relating to transportation and communication -Fairbanks’ scales -Western Union telegraph monthly bills Newspaper subscriptions and box rental, Steamships, mercantile fees and sail making, Railway passage and Express companies. 92 receipts for miscellaneous household receipts including Livestock feed, Crockery and glassware, Guns and gun material, Trunks, bags, shawl straps, Plate glass, Watches, clocks, jewelry, Slate, tin, copper gravel roof, Carpets, wallpapers & draperies, Cloths and clothing, House, ship, sign and ornament painters, Stoves, ranges, furnaces, tin and sheet iron ware, 16 receipts for horses and carriage care and maintenance – Stabling, Horse shoeing and other animal maintenance, Horse and carriage furnishings, Carriage maintenance and repair including painting. Included is an interesting letter from a Manufacturer of Light Carriages and Wagons about laying pipe for water allowing adequate supply for 20 families. 77 receipts for plants and seeds, fertilizer, garden supplies and ornaments, greenhouse supplies. This appears to have been a great passion for the household. Many of the receipts are multiple pages of large quantities of trees, plants and seeds from the premiere producers at the time.- Trees, plants and seeds from nurseries and auctions, Fertilizer and farming tools, Greenhouse and garden equipment and pasture leases. Also letters regarding “master gardening” and requests for refunds for plants that died.

Bound in publisher's royal blue cloth stamped in red and gilt; red topstain. Good, crudely rebacked with clumsy repairs to corners and upper board right edge. Slight lean to spine, cloth soiled, gilt mostly all rubbed. Contents tanned and with markings to title page and foreword. Barnes' first novel, a modernist romp with themes of free sexuality and polygamy. A homely copy with demerits, though scarce signed.
