Description
London: Thos. McLean, 1835. The Progress of a Midshipman Eight Hand Colored Aquatint Plates by George Cruikshank CRUIKSHANK, George, engraver. [MARRYAT, Frederick, illustrator]. The Progress of a Midshipman exemplified in the career of Master Blockhead in seven plates & Frontispiece. London: Thos. McLean, Aug 1st 1835. First edition, [third state of the plates]. Oblong quarto (10 5/8 x 16 3/4 inches; 270 x 426 mm.). Eight hand-colored aquatint plates, including the hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, engraved by G. Cruikshank after Captain Frederick Marryat. All plates mounted on stubs. Plate no. 8 has alight water-stain on the lower margin (7/8 x 6 inches; 23 x 152 mm.) not affecting plate mark. Plate nos. 4, 5, 6 & 7 have the same water-stain but so light, they are almost invisible. Recent half black straight-grain morocco over marbled boards, spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. According to OCLC and KVK there is only one copy of the first state with the plates dated 1820. (Harvard University, Houghton Library, MA, USA): Just one copy of the second state with the plates dated 1821. (Huntington Library, CA, USA) and just one copy of the third state with the plates dated 1835. (Harvard University, Houghton Library, MA, USA) Note: Interestingly enough plate numbers 2, 4, 5 & 6 show a feint "Pubd. by G. Humphrey 27 St. James's St. London 1820" just above the McLean imprints. The Plates: 1. Fitting Out - Plate 1 August 1st, 1835). 2. Master B. Finding things not exactly what he expected. (Plate 2, August 1st, 1835). 3. Mr. B. on the Middle Watch. (Plate 3, August 1st, 1835). Hand-colored aquatint. 4. Mr. B. Mastheaded - or, enjoying the fresh air for the 304th time. (Plate 4, August 1st, 1835). 5. Mr. B. seeking the Bubble reputation. (Plate 5, August 1st, 1835). 6. *Waiting room at the Admiralty - (*no misnomer). (Plate 6, August 1st, 1835). 7. Mr. B. Promoted to Lieut: & first putting on his uniform. (Plate 7, August 1st, 1835). 8. The Progress of a Midshipman exemplified in the career of Master Blockhead in seven plates & Frontispiece. (Plate 8, August 1st, 1835). Cohn, 1874; Patten, vol. 1, pp. 198-205.

Description
London: J. Cassell, 1853. One of George Cruikshank's Teetotalling Pamphlets With Eleven Fine Woodcut Engarvings CRUIKSHANK, George. The Glass and the New Crystal Palace. With cuts. London, J. Cassell, 1853. First edition of this pamphlet against alcohol. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches; 222 x 140 mm.). 32 pp. Eleven woodcut engravings in the text. Bound ca. 1900 by Tout in three quarter dark green morocco over marbled boards, ruled in gilt, spine with two raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered lettered horizontally in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Publisher's front and rear yellow printed wrappers bound in. The vignette on the title-page is repeated on the front wrapper. Front wrapper and title-page nearly detached, otherwise a near fine copy. One of Cruikshank's teetotalling pamphlets inveighing against the opening of the Crystal Palace on Sundays and the attendant sale of alcoholic beverages. With the distribution and consumption of alcohol permitted in the New Crystal Palace, Cruikshank "protested, with some justice, at the hypocrisy that permitted the rich unlimited indulgence while circumscribing the pleasures of the poor. Although several of the illustrations take a light-hearted view of the subject, the pamphlet jabs with right and left" (Patten, II, p. 325). Cohn, 203.

Description
NY: Funk and Wagnall's, 1966. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG+/Very Good. First edition with an atypical and personal sketch by Sloane on teh ffe. Typically, Sloane sketches covered bridges or tools or whatever is the subject of his book to the inscribee. In this case, Sloane has sketched a Christmas greeting from one couple to another which recalls a shared vacation "(on) the banana boat" and a shared joke about a formation of clouds that resembles a woman's breast and torso; the observing couple, looking skyward, proclaim "look there's a cumulus boobilus". All in all, highly unusual for a Sloane sketch. Dustjacket a little bit worn. A solid - and collectible - copy.

Description
London: Henry Sotheran & Co, 1878. First edition. Full Calf. Very Good. 8vo. 22 by 14 cm. Title leaf, table of contents, then eleven etchings, each given in two states, one hand-colored, the other, without color, and in each of these etchings is presented on eight leaves, for a total of sixteen plates. Following the plates are many blank leaves which allowed for the binding to have some thickness and a title label on the spine. Thackeray was an accomplished caricaturist, but we should be glad that a Cruikshank he was not, and that in time he chose to concentrate on the written word for his sustenance. Bound in full calf by Bradstreet's. Bookplate with section and shelf lines, but we believe this is for a private library. No other signs that can be interpreted as ex-lib. Spine leather darkened. Chips to spine labels. Tight and clean within.
