Description
London: Tinsley Brothers, 1868. First Edition. three Volumes. Octavo. 18.5cm. Bound in a 19th century tan roan binding over marbled boards, titled and ruled in gilt to spines. [viii]; 315pp.; 297pp.; 309pp. Some sunning to spines, scuffing and light rubbing to corners and spine ends, hinges strong, gilt bright, just general shelfwear; internally clean and fresh, plain endpapers with some oxidization, old ink ownership to front flyleaves, bookplate of Emory University Library to front pastedowns, and a pencil catalog note to verso title page, half-titles lacking in all volumes, page edges speckled red, a little spotting and soiling in places, some scruffy stitching to the gutter of p.297 in Vol II. A very good, respectable and attractive, first edition set in a solid binding. Not the first detective novel, not the first police procedural, and not the first time a British upper class family has been generationally cursed for the pillaging and theft of a holy relic from a distant and exotic land - for most people that is referred to as "looting", but for the average 19th century Brit at large with a musket and a daily alcohol allowance, that was just called "Tuesday". "The Moonstone" has claims to be a common ancestor of the modern police detective novel with its solid, methodical rose-fixated Sergeant Cuff and it's (for the time) meticulously plotted distribution of clues and hunches, although at the time of publication some audiences found the criminal investigation aspect to be somewhat sordid and low-brow; and doubtless set the tone and a lot of the genre ground rules for subsequent development. A fair portion of the detail was inspired by true crime cases like the Constance Kent affair (investigated by Jack Whicher, a detective who laid quite a few ground rules himself), and the novel was serialized in Dickens' "All The Year Round" magazine (the title which currently tenuously holds the title of earliest detective mystery; "The Notting Hill Mystery" was originally printed anonymously in the popular periodical "Once A Week" in 1862-63) before being pubished as a triple decker by Tinsley. It's something of a stand-out Victorian novel, not merely for its appearance during the birth of an entirely new popular literary genre (probably the third most widely read genre of all time), but also because it turns a cold eye on British colonizer excesses, depicts its three Brahmin antagonists (essentially just seeking the return of their giant yellow diamond) respectfully and with dignity, especially for a tale told barely a decade after what Victorian Britain referred to as "The Indian Mutiny" in 1857 during which period it was almost de rigeur to depict Indians in a brutal, depraved, and contemptuous manner. Similarly, Colonel Herncastle, the looter of Seringapatam, who brought all this death and fear to Wiltshire, is depicted as being a man with almost no redeeming qualities. Critics at the time made note of Collins meticulous plotting, (although Dickens disparaged it, and Collins himself, anxious and high as a kite on laudanum, found it laborious), and Chekovian foreshadowing. An impressive keystone in the crazy paving of 19th century literary development. "The Moonstone" was met with considerable popular acclaim, and the first run of 1500 copies sold in its entirety.

The collection is comprised of about 22 printed self study courses and other pamphlets by Mark-Age, Inc. This collection covers the first two years of this groups existence. Rare. Mark-Age was founded as the Mark-Age MetaCenter in 1960 in Miami, Florida by Pauline Sharpe and Charles Boyd Gentzel. Both were channelers, and Sharpe was a contactee. Charles Boyd Gentzel was known as Mark and Pauline Sharpe was known within the group as Nada-Yolanda. While it was officially founded in 1960, the group was based on a spiritual message Gentzel had supposedly received in 1956, with the name "Mark-Age" being "revealed" in 1949, which was deepened by a second message on the significance of the name six years later. Mark-Age was affiliated with Gloria Lee, the founder of the Cosmon Research Foundation. She died in 1962 during a hunger strike, communicating with the group shortly before her death, and after her death members claimed to commune with her. The year after her death they published Gloria Lee Lives! which purported to be her communications from beyond. Among their services were classes, seminars, and as sponsors for leaders in the growing metaphysical, self-help arena. Mark-Age has published books, booklets, courses, magazines, and audiocassettes for an international membership of individuals, churches, schools, universities, and independent study groups. Mark-Age is a contactee or UFO religion, as well as a New Age one, with Christian elements. Their beliefs are heavily influenced by Theosophy.

Abecassis rendering of the Song of Songs, a conversation of two lovers, and in Jewish tradition held as an allegory of the bond between god and the Jewish people, is an exquisite example of artistic Biblical interpretation. Serigraphs uncut at top. Portfolio with 3 x 0.5" staineat lower front cover and light rubbing, light wear and rubbing at edge of vertical flap, else in fine condition. Raphael Abecassis, born in 1953 in Morocco, immigrated to Israel as a young child. He attended the Beer Sheva College of Education. Many of his works recount Biblical stories in a colorful, refreshing way. He was awarded prizes for an Independence Day poster in 1986, a Ministry of Education Award for his "Psalms of David," as well as the illumination of President Chaim Herzog's speech at the Western Wall commemorating Israel's 40th birthday.

Description
Brooklyn, 1893. Single page. Some tears at creases, else about fine, very good overall. Very Good. A letter written by Thaddeus Hyatt to the editor of the New York Tribune, in response to a letter written by Eli Thayer on William Lloyd Garrison entitled “Garrison and his Creed.” Hyatt takes issue with Thayer’s portrayal of Garrison. He writes: “I think it is a great pity that so practical a man in Eli thayer, and who confessedly did a great work for Kansas (for which I have alwqays honored him) - should end his days as a Don Quixote, for he might just as well hope to bring down Gibraltar with a pop-gun as to think that he can change the verdict which coming generations will surely take upon the men he so grossly misrepresents and defames…. I am not a non-resistant; but my heart was with Mr. Garrison always in all his burning utterances against Slavery. Garrison, Phillips and John Brown need no defenders. Mr Thayer only hurts himself, and I respect to add that the Tribune (in my judgment) ;;is hurt also by publishing a letter so vindictive, unfair, unjust and untrue. Certainly, were Horace Greeley living, and were to to admit such a composition into the Tribune, it would not be with the introduction which heralds it now.” A rare letter from Hyatt showing his commitment to the abolitionist cause following emancipation. We find no other records of correspondence by Hyatt in auction records.

Purcell began his musical career as a choirboy and remained a church musician throughout his life, holding positions at Westminster Abbey as well as the Chapel Royal. Like John Blow he wrote four types of church music: services; anthems for full choir and organ, or with short ensemble verse passages (often called full with verse anthems); verse anthems for solo voices, choir, and organ; and 'symphony anthems' for solo voices, choir, strings, and continuo, which at first were performed exclusively in the royal presence though several later circulated more widely in versions with organ accompaniment only." Peter Holman and Robert Thompson in Grove Music Online An English organist, composer, collector, antiquarian, and founder of the Novello publishing house, Vincent Novello (1781-1861) did much to promote the study and performance of music in 19th century England.

Description
New Albany, Ind: [Printed by The Tribune Company(?), 1916. Octavo (22 x 15 cm.), 44, [iv] pages. Advertisements. Author from cover. Printer and date of publication from external evidence. ~ Evident FIRST EDITION. A contract community cookbook undertaken "in answer to the demand among church and club women for something new" - a reference to "relishes, garnishes, and much [else that] will appeal to the women seeking a pleasing change" (from the anonymous prefatory paragraph headed "Popular Dainties" on page 3). With three hundred short, unattributed recipes, including: Sweet Pepper Salad, Orange de Menthe (with pickled walnuts), Dandelion Salad ("In the spring time, every household should have this salad at least once a day."), Nasturtium Salad, Pickled Oysters, Gooseberry Relish, Pineapple Flummery, Maraschino Ice Cream, Pomegranate Punch, Ginger Root Punch, Sassafras Shrub, Nut Glace, Candied Violets, and a peculiar grouping of Chili con Carne, Fish Chowder, Loo Ching Suey, Li Hung Chang Suey, and Mushrooms à la Japan. ~ Crown Camp 4224 was a chapter of the Royal Neighbors of America, a mutual aid collective first conceived by wives and members of the fraternal society Modern Woodmen of America, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and formally chartered in 1895 in Peoria, Illinois. Modeled on the Woodmen, a beneficial fraternity also born in Iowa, the Neighbors expanded after their incorporation into dozens of communities, espousing a philanthropic mission to provide assistance in times of need. Both organizations established themselves as purveyors of insurance products, in which guise they continue to conduct business still. ~ New Albany, seat of Floyd County on the southern border, faces Louisville across the Ohio River. Its Neighbors chapter, identifying themselves in city directories as the Ladies' Auxiliary of Woodmen chapter 3463, met on Wednesdays in the hall of yet another fraternal organization, the Improved Order of Red Men, at 107 West Market Street. Their cookbook is presumed to have been assembled by means of a contract service, as at least five other instances of the same title are known, all of them with advertising from different communities but without corporate ascription on their title pages. That the recipes are unattributed also suggests a process of compilation from a list of offerings rather than submission by authors to an editorial committee. Local printing by the Tribune is proposed solely on the notion that the newspaper's job printing service was much used by, and well advertised in, directory and other community service publications. ~ Several clues to dating provide a reasonable if not definitive span. On the later end, the detailed advertisement for J. H. Fisher Wines & Liquors on the rear panel of the wrappers suggests the sensitivities that must have lain under the surface ("auto delivery, with no signs" and "no marks to indicate contents") before Prohibition reached Indiana in April 1918. But a handwritten annotation in pencil to a recipe for Feather Cake (on page 43) - "Baked Oct. 20 '16" - can be permitted to tighten the frame by two years. The terminus post quem might also be pushed back, as the note of proprietorship in an advertisement (on the interior front panel) for the Knoefel Drug Company might signal the business's recent purchase by Edward G. Mayes in November 1911 (The Pharmaceutical Era 44 no. 11 [November 1911], page 505). But on a cautionary note, it also may be the case that Rose Detrick's purchase of a millinery store in 1913 (Currier-Journal [Louisville, Aug 21, 1913], page 10) may be the transaction referred to in an advertisement on page [24]. ~ Age-toning and light soil throughout; stapled, in soiled and rubbed printed gray wrappers, with advertisements to all panels. Good. Unrecorded. [OCLC locates no copies; not in Brown, Cook, or Cagle].
