Description: Maine, 1960. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 10". String-tied black cloth over paper boards with gilt decorations. Contains 208 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs and 3 later color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 3.5" x 5.5" with captions. Photo album is very good with detached but present pages, small tears, and spotting with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a New England family between 1902 and 1960. The album details a variety of family events including trips and vacations. The album is not in chronological order and begins with photos of a Boy Scout Troop from Dracut, Massachusetts between 1923 and 1924. These photos show the troop in group photos during their "1st Overnight Hike" in New Hampshire. The boys are seen cooking, starting fires, and hiking in candid snapshots. The next section documents a trip to Quebec in 1902 with photos of Montmorency Falls and the Quebec Zoo. In 1919 the family who kept the album bought a home in Dracut, Massachusetts. The photos document the changes they made to the house, including the addition of a sun porch, and the changing of seasons. One caption reads, "several large Baldwin apple trees in full bloom added to the beauty of the spring." The album shows the beauty of the New England landscape with photos of waterfalls, rock faces, and beaches as well as working on the family farm. One section of six photos shows the welding of the Portland to Montreal pipeline in 1941. The pipeline began as a response to the oil shortages Canada was facing in World War II. The decision was made to take crude oil from Portland, Maine to Montreal with a pipeline which measured approximately 236 miles. The photos here show the construction of the pipeline, digging ditches, laying pipe, and welding. One photo shows the joining of the pipe at "the line," the border between the U.S. and Canada. Another photo shows an aerial view of the pipe "looking North." The later part of the album is a collection of travel and family photos through the 1960s. Many of the photos are taken in the 1940s depicting picnics, campsites, and road travel, including a section of photos from a camping trip to Mt. Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine, in September of 1942. These photos show people hiking up the Dudley Trail featuring snapshots of the Knife Edge peak and Chimney Pond. Later in the album the family visit Keene, New Hampshire and New York as well. The New York photos show Radio City's ice rink, Grant's tomb, and the library at Columbia, among other tourist sites. A few of the photos are in color from the 1960s and show an older couple posing together. An extensive New England family album featuring boy scouts and the homefront during World War II.
