Description
1827. First Edition. (COOPER, James Fenimore). The Red Rover, a Tale. By the Author of The Pilot, etc., etc. Paris: Hector Bossange, 1827. Three volumes. Small octavo, early full black polished calf, gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges. $6800.First edition, published in Paris during Cooper's extended visit to France, preceding both the English and American editions, of Cooper’s eighth novel, a maritime adventure, handsomely bound. In the 1820s Cooper established himself as the leading American novelist with the successful publication and popularity of The Pilot (1824) and especially The Last of the Mohicans (1826). ""Though Cooper's financial problems had been severe, by 1826 he had solved them"" (ANB). As a result of brisk sales of his novels, in 1826 ""Cooper then fulfilled a longstanding desire to take his family to Europe. He stopped briefly in London to arrange for the publication of the as yet unfinished Prairie and went on to Paris, where he remained until February 1828. He completed The Prairie there and also wrote The Red Rover (1827). Cooper's reputation had preceded him to Europe, and he soon found himself moving in the best Paris society"" (ANB). Red Rover was written during Cooper's stay in Paris, right after he completed publication of The Prairie. The story concerns a pirate and a young officer in the British Navy who is tasked with apprehending him in the Americas. The two find common ground and the pirate, Red Rover, is ultimately shown to be as principled as his Navy counterparts. Red Rover, the second of Cooper's maritime novels, is one of American literature's most powerful love letters to life at sea. Bound with half titles. This first edition precedes the London first English edition of 1827 and the first American edition published in Philadelphia in 1828. BAL 3837. See Spiller & Blackburn A9. Bookplate.Text nearly fine with only very occasional faint foxing; early calf-gilt bindings with expert repairs to joints, spine ends and corners. An excellent copy of this rarity.

Description
München [Munich]: Friederich Adolf Ackermann, 1893. Very good.. First edition of a stunning large picture book chronicling a festival and concert put on by Grandville-style humanized animals. Best known for his collections of fairy tales and folk tales, Bechstein's considerable artistic skills have been largely under-appreciated in the 21st century. The influence of Grandville is evident in his style, as is that of his naturalist uncle Johann Matthäus Bechstein. This copy bears the ownership marks of Professor J. Henry Senger, a professor of German at the University of California, Berkeley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was an associate of John Muir, and one of the founding members of the Sierra Club. 12.25'' x 15.5''. Original green publisher's cloth binding with large color pictorial paste-on and gilt stamped titles. Fore-edges red and gilt gauffered. Color pictorial endpapers of a variety of songbirds. 15 full-page color illustrations with black-and-white illustrations throughout. [68] pages. Ink owner's name to verso of front flyleaf, dated "[18]94." 19th century bookplate of J. Henry Senger to verso of front flyleaf. Paste-on uniformly toned; corners and spine ends lightly bumped, with some loss repaired at spine foot. Occasional small closed tears to margins. A bright copy.

Unable to partake in physical activity, she immersed herself in literature, which proved to be her greatest pleasure. Some years later, she entered the publishing industry while she was still quite young, writing for magazines. Soon, she became the associate editor of T.S. Arthur's Lady's Home Magazine, to which she also contributed various pieces. Following the publication of her first novel Living and Loving in 1857, Townsend then wrote a number of popular novels for girls, including Amy Deane (1862), Janet Strong (1865), and A Boston Girl's Ambitions (1887). In addition to composing fiction and historical sketches, she taught rhetoric at the Family School for Young Ladies in Massachusetts, which was run by Dioclesian Lewis. Townsend lived with Dr. Lewis and his wife until 1881 and, after their passing, she lived with the Lewis' successors. The rest of her life was unmarked by tragedy or incident, and she spent her days writing, reading, and going to Boston to stay with friends up until her death in Arlington.
