Description
Paris: Shakespeare And Company, 1929. First edition. One of 96 numbered copies printed on Arches paper. Our Exagmination contains brief quotations from Work In Progress, including a passage concerning Swift and blindness which was not later incorporated in Finnegans Wake. The ‘Letters of Protest' are reputed to have been written by Joyce himself. Slocum & Cahoon B10. Also includes Samuel Beckett's first appearance in print, his essay on Joyce entitled "Dante, Bruno, Vico, Joyce." The present copy belonged to Mogens Boisen, the Danish translator of Ulysses, and is inscribed to him by Sylvia Beach. It also includes two letters from him to a former owner, explaining the circumstances whereby he was given the book. Small chip from rear wrapper, front wrapper lightly creased, otherwise a fine copy, with two copies of the publication announcement, preserved in a folding board box. 8vo, original printed wrappers. Small chip from rear wrapper, front wrapper lightly creased, otherwise a fine copy, with two copies of the publication announcement, preserved in a folding board box.

Very Good
Description
Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag, 1937. Hardcover. Very Good. Twelve first editions thus and four reprints of the first complete German edition of Conrad's work. Sixteen volumes. Most translated by Elsie McCalman, several by Ernst W. Freißler (one with the assistance of Hedwig Lachmann). One volume with a frontispiece portrait of Conrad; three with forwards or afterwards (see below). Text in German. 12mos. Approximately [6,000]pp. Yellow cloth stamped in navy and red, with navy topstains. Each volume with the small neat bookplate of "Bibliothek EGB Bibring" on the front pastedown. Spines and most endpapers lightly toned, bindings moderately soiled and lightly worn, nine volumes with a tiny number inked on the rear pastedown and one volume with a very short tear on the shoulder, a very good set. We were unable to locate a complete set list, although from an occasional publisher's ad in the rear we locate at least one missing title (*Almayer's Folly*), and we note that the publication of this series, which began in 1926, continued until 1939 (final volume in this set was published in 1937). The titles included are: *Der Goldene Pfeil [The Golden Arrow]*; *Sieg: Eine Inselgeschichte [Victory: An Island Tale]*; *Die Rettung [Rescue: A Romance of the Shallows]*; *Zwischen Ebbe und Flut [Within the Tides]*; *Mit den Augen des Westens [Under Western Eyes]; *Spiel des Zufalls [Chance]*; *Der Geheimagent [The Secret Agent]*, with an introduction by Thomas Mann (second edition); *Lord Jim* (second edition); *Jugend: Drei Erzählungen [Youth: Three Stories]; *Der Freibeuter [The Rover]*; *Nostromo*; *Lebenserinnerungen [A Personal Record]*; *Der Verdammte der Inseln [An Outcast of the Islands]*; *Die Schattenlinie: Eine Beichte [The Shadow Line: A Confession]*, with a forward by Jakob Wassermann (second edition); *Spannung [Suspense]*, with an epilogue by G. Jean-Aubry; and *Der Nigger vom "Narcissus" [The Nigger of the "Narcissus"]* (second edition).
