Description
Vienna: Mekhitarist Fathers and Johann Rauh, 1852. Oblong folio. (16 5/8 x 22 1/4 inches). [6] I-VI [1] 2-11 [12] 12 plates [2]. 12 hand-colored lithographic plates by Czerny after Antoine, printed by Johann Rauh, 11 of which are preceded by a prepared transparent guard leaf on which the name of the plant depicted in the following plate is strategically printed. Lithographic dedication with integral blindstamped coat-of-arms. Contemporary blue velvet gilt. Provenance: Bookplate of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, crowned Gothic letter 'E', c. 1870s confirmed by comparable book plate in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek A rare botanical work on the plants growing in the vast greenhouse complex ("Wintergarten") at the Hofburg palace in Vienna. The Hofburg palace in Vienna was the main residence of the ruling Habsburg family for over 600 years. In the 19th century it underwent a renaissance during the reigns of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1848-1916) and Empress Elisabeth (1837-1898), but it was in the early part of the century that the spectacular "Wintergarten" complex was built. Franz Antoine records the exterior (1 view) and interior sights as they were over a series of two winters, in 1849/1850 and 1850/1851: long enough after the establishment of the Wintergarten for the trees and shrubs to have matured. The interior views are prefaced by a single exterior scene of the complex in mid-winter. The 11 interior views are each accompanied by a tissue guard that has been printed with the names of the various plants shown, and treated with varnish to make the guards more transparent. In addition, the plates are described on the first five pages of text. The remaining 11 pp. of text is devoted to general botanical information about the plants and plant families that were grown in the Wintergarten. Antoine, the son of horticulturalist Franz de Paula Antoine (1768-1834), was born in Austria and served as director of the Schönbrunn gardens near Vienna. A gifted artist, as the present work demonstrates, he was also the author of a number of other botanical works (on conifers, the cyprus family, and bromeliads). He dedicated the present work to His Imperial Highness Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph (1832-1867), Archduke of Austria, a keen botanist who was later crowned Emperor of Mexico. Interestingly, the title notes that any profit from the sale of this work was to be given to the charitable "Fonde der Radetzky-, Jellacic- und Welden-Invalidenstiftungen," charitable groups dedicated to those with disabilities. BM (NH) I, p.53; Nissen BBI 44. London: Faber and Faber Ltd, 1936. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good. First British edition, first printing. Association copy signed by Djuna Barnes on the front free endpaper and warmly inscribed to Chester Page with date 1970. 239 pp. Bound in publisher's purple cloth with gilt lettering to spine, blue topstain. Near Fine with slight lean to spine, light rubbing and toning to extremities, and fading to topstain. Contents lightly toned. In a Very Good unclipped dust jacket with light toning and moderate edgewear and soiling. The groundbreaking lesbian-themed novel, uncommon in the original dust jacket and quite scarce as a signed first. Messerli 6. Djuna Barnes became a notorious recluse during the last decades of her life, suspicious of all but her closest friends. One of those friends, poet Marianne Moore, became concerned about Barnes' health in the spring of 1970 and asked a young pianist and bibliophile named Chester Page to call her. Somewhat surprisingly, Barnes invited him to tea, and the ensuing friendship that developed lasted until her death in 1982. This book marks the earliest stages of a relationship that defined the last decade of the great writer's life, as covered in Page's Memoirs of a Charmed Life in New York. He notes the difficulty of getting signed books from Barnes: "I knew Djuna regarded giving her signature as though she were giving her life blood.

Description
Augsburg: Melchior Ramminger, 1523. One of five editions all printed in 1523. Hardcover. Fine. Modern boards. A fine copy with a beautiful four-part title page border, the lower register of which shows a stag hunt. There is also a small woodcut of the Virgin, balancing on the crescent moon, and holding the infant Christ. A sermon for Lichtmeß (Candlemas), the feast of the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple and the purification of Mary (February 2). Jesus takes as his text Luke 2:22-39. For the complexities of Luther’s evolving Mariology, see Thomas O'Meara, Mary in Protestant and Catholic Theology (1966). “Luther's attitude toward the theology of Mary and toward the devotion which a Christian should have to the Mother of God is a small-scale representation of his entire religious accomplishment. During any discussion of Luther and the Blessed Virgin we must keep uppermost in our minds that there was a development in his ideas, a change more or less drastic in each aspect of Marian theology. This development has its beginning in Catholicism; it passes through contradictions, struggles, and uncertainties, and terminates in a new Marian viewpoint, one which Luther decided was Christocentric, biblical, unexaggerated, and edifying.”(p. 123).

London: [Riccardi Press] Philip Lee Warner for the Medici Society, 1913. No. 175 OF 525 COPIES on paper (and 12 on vellum), the ILLUSTRATIONS UNIQUE TO THIS COPY. 247 x 173 mm. (9 3/4 x 6 1/2"). 4 p.l., 41, [3] pp. Publisher's limp vellum, gilt lettering to upper cover and flat spine, yapp edges, four green silk ties. Half title with green publisher's device of the Riccardi Press and WITH THREE ORIGINAL SIGNED COLOR ETCHINGS ADDED BY ARTIST SUSAN ALLIX tipped in, all with tissue guards. Ransom, p. 396; Tomkinson, p. 150. ◆AN IMMACULATE COPY. This remarkably well-preserved volume is the product of a happy marriage between an Arts & Crafts private press and an inventive present-day book artist, who has supplied original illustrations here. Born in 1943, Susan Allix studied painting at the Guildford School of Art and printmaking at the Royal College of Art. She began her career as a printmaker before founding the Willow Press in 1973; for many years, she was responsible for every element of the books she issued: setting the type and printing the text, creating the illustrations, and binding the volume, often in a flamboyant design. Here, she has added her own illustrations to a book from the heyday of the modern private press movement. The three etchings juxtapose the figure of Psyche as a modern woman with a Cupid inspired by Classical statues. The colors added are deep, mysterious shades of purple and blue, in one print enlivened with a bit of pale yellow and pink. So far as we have been able to ascertain, these etchings do not occur in any other copy of this book, nor in any other volume. Allix has said, "I see books as full of colour and form in a pictorial sense as well as through the images created in my mind by the words, and through the sculptural qualities a book possesses." On her website she describes the prints she makes for books as "etchings and similar intaglio processes, used separately or together with lino cuts, wood cuts, pochoir and painting. The colours for the etchings are pigments ground into copperplate oil." Founded by Herbert Horne, the Riccardi Press was adopted as the imprint of the Medici Society in 1909 and issued books until 1933. According to Tomkinson, "the books have nearly all been printed at the Chiswick Press (under the supervision of Charles T. Jacobi until his retirement in 1922) and published by Philip Lee Warner, who was Publisher to the Medici Society until his death in 1925. . . . The aim of the Press has been to produce finely printed books at reasonable prices and for sale through the ordinary channels of trade. . . . All editions are strictly limited, and the type is distributed after the edition has been printed." A number of luxury editions of Riccardi Press books were issued with color plates by William Russell Flint (), and Allix here joins in that tradition with her compositions, which augment a book published without illustrations..

Description
Lugduni Batavorum [Leyden]: Bonaventura Elzevier and Abraham Elzevier, 1643. Second Elzevier Edition. 137 x 78 mm. (5 1/2 x 3"). 12 p.l., 672, 44 pp., [2] leaves. ELEGANT EARLY 19TH CENTURY RED STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, VERY ELABORATELY GILT, BY BOZERIAN (unsigned, but see below), covers framed by bead-and-star roll enclosed with double gilt fillets, leaf tools at corners. smooth spine in compartments with large central fleuron of floral lancets emanating from central circlet in a richly stippled ground, small circles at corners, one compartment with gilt lettering, cresting tulip and violet roll at foot of spine, turn-ins with bead-and-star roll, marbled endpapers, vellum flyleaves, all edges gilt. Woodcut initials, headpieces, and tailpieces, numismatic portrait tondo, fine engraved title page by C. C. Dusend showing Erasmus gazing through a telescope at the Godly orb seen through parted clouds. Willems 552; Rahir 546; USTC 1027918. For the binding: Culot, "Jean Claude Bozerian," Roulette 9 (Plate I) and Palette 12 (Plate X). Just barely perceptible rubbing to joints and extremities, one leaf with tiny burn hole affecting a couple of words, intermittent minor foxing, negligible ink spots here and there, other trivial imperfections, but an extremely attractive copy, the text fresh and clean, and the very well-preserved binding with lustrous leather and bright gilt. This is a remarkably pretty copy of an extremely influential but generically elusive work, printed by a legendary press and bound by the founder of a celebrated French binding dynasty. First published in 1524, the "Colloquia" comprise 63 conversations originally written for Erasmus' students on varied and overlapping topics, but these urbane meditations soon became widely read, as they covered subjects that intrigued the important thinkers of the day. Their influence was so profound that it is not saying too much to claim that they helped to speed the Reformation. Although they are difficult to classify precisely, one could categorize them as including, in general terms, exposure of ritualistic fallacies, invective against corruption within the church, examination of popular imposture, deploring of contemporary personal sins, practical advice for laymen, and miscellaneous discussion of amusing topics. In specific terms, the text takes on such controversial topics as the value of pilgrimage, celibacy, and abstinence from meat on Fridays and other prescribed days. Erasmus' "Colloquia" was frequently published by the Elzeviers, once in French and a total of nine times in Latin. The text was universally adopted for school use up through the 18th century. Although our lovely little binding is unsigned, Culot firmly identifies its tools as those used by Jean-Claude Bozerian (1762-1840). He was the elder of the Bozerian brothers (François is referred to as "le jeune") and was active in Paris from 1795 to about 1810. He began his career in Lyon as an apprentice bookseller, printer, and bookbinder, eventually deciding to focus on the latter craft. Marriage to the widow of binder Pierre Boulier allowed him to establish a binding workshop in Paris, where he was joined by his brother. His bindings were soon much in demand by French bibliophiles, who appreciated their superior materials, tasteful design, and flawless execution--all characteristics that are plainly evident in the present case..

Description
Washington DC, 18 January 1900. Letter. Folds from mailing, faint soiling at edges. Near Fine. Fine SIGNED handwritten four-page letter on all sides of a 9-1/2" x 7-3/4" sheet of paper folded in half to a Miss R. K. Crandall, written in answer to an inquiry about documents concerning American foreign affairs. In part: "Miss Donnely was instructed to copy for me all documents she could find which had relation to American affairs between 1789 and 1799. Between 1799 and 1875 I made the search myself, and selected the material for copy. The latter documents, 1799 -- 1875, were found in several volumes, and are now at Quincy in Massachusetts. The documents from 1789 to 1799 were bound in four volumes, and are now here in Washington. All are at your service if you wish to consult them, but I have neither index nor list, and unless you can come here for the purpose I am at a loss to know how to assist you. Documents cannot be sent about, like books, not so much because of their value.... On the other hand, any particular paper you want shall be promptly copied and sent to you." With a clipping of a description of this item from a 1984 auction. Henry Adams (1838-1918, American historian and author, was a descendent of John and John Quincy Adams. His posthumously published memoir, THE EDUCATION OF HENRY ADAMS, was awarded the 1919 Pulitzer Prize.

Description
Austria; Java, Indonesia; London, England; and Los Angeles, California, 1947. Sixteen pieces: two “Friends’ Esperanto Society” bulletins, 8 x 12 ½ inch each; two letters, 8 ½ x 11 inch each; seven “Hinda Esperantisto” pamphlets, 5 ½ x 8 inch, four pages each; two “Declaration” forms, 4 x 6 inches; one BES pamphlet, 4 ½ x 6 inches, eight pages; one set of tickets for membership information, 2 x 5 inches (missing one tear-off ticket), and one “Universala Ligo” membership card for 1947, 3 x 4 ½ inches. Folded; some chipping and tearing at edges. Overall excellent to near fine.. Esperanto is an artificial language created by Polish physician Ludwik Zamenhof (1859–1917) in 1887. Zamenhof intended Esperanto to be a universal second language; his experiences growing up Jewish in the Russian Empire among Russian, Polish, German, and Yiddish speakers—all of whom regarded each other at best with suspicion—led him to believe that an easily-learned, neutral second language could by contrast inspire unity between all people. Offered here is a small collection of materials related to various Esperanto societies: the “BES” (a Czech group), the Universal Esperanto Association, the Friends’ Esperanto Society, the Esperanto Club of Los Angeles, and Hinda Esperantisto – “Indian Esperantist,” based in Java, Indonesia. These materials, written largely in Esperanto (note that most quotes herein are translated), are mostly typical club bulletins, advertising events, announcing members’ news, and reminding the reader of upcoming fees. The BES pamphlet, besides advertising its Adresaro (member directory), solicits donations for a “living monument to Esperanto”—a headquarters—to be built in Potštejn, in Czechia, “in the shape of a five-pointed star, which would become a real home for all those who love goodness, beauty, health, truth, and progress. The stone-like, majestic, white building will shine brightly in a beautiful circle from a moderate slope, and the fragrant forest behind it will form a charming background.” (1932) This utopian vision was likely prevented at least in part by the Nazi occupation of the country. Esperanto speakers, including Zamenhof’s family in particular, were among their many targets. The effort to purge the universal language from Europe was clearly not successful; a postwar letter from a language teacher in Austria to a gentleman in California, included in this collection, notes that the Californian’s address had been printed “in the magazine ‘Die Weltsprache’” – that is, “The World Language” (February 14, 1947). Esperanto’s egalitarian and pacifist aims form a large part of its appeal to Quakers. It is unclear whether the Friends’ Esperanto Society, which authored two of the items in this collection, is the same as the Kvakera Esperanto-Societo, which was founded in 1921 and is still active. The March 1935 bulletin announces the F.E.S.’s annual meeting at Friends House in London, the headquarters of the Religious Society of Friends in Britain. An obituary for Wilson Henry Sturge, the Society’s Vice President, remarks on “his desire for international friendship and understanding through Esperanto” (March 1935). The January 1936 bulletin calls members to petition their local Registrar of Education for Esperanto to be taught in high schools, a request echoed by the Universala Esperanto-Asocio’s declaration form calling on the United Nations to “help to spread the use of this language in every possible way”, including supporting its teaching in schools, in order “to facilitate communication between the peoples of the world and to promote social progress.” George R. Thompson’s letter to the Los Angeles Esperanto Club, as its President, strikes a similarly idealistic tone. He gives Club members his “Decalogue,” finishing with an exhortation to: “10. Fix our eyes directly on our dear goal, the universal brotherhood of humanity, and global peace – through linguistic mutual understanding” (August 1, 1933). “Hinda Esperantisto”, written by Liem Tjong Hie, is somewhat more polemical. Its announcements include news from the Manchurian Federation of Esperantists, who proposed to make Esperanto the region’s official language and “to abolish the English language” (Jan-May 1933). It criticizes “the European progressive writers”, especially the Hungarian Esperantist Kálmán Kalocsay, for making the language more difficult for learners. Liem also writes, mysteriously: “The world does not know that the Belgian Esperanto Institute, dir. Frans Schoofs, Antwerp, is a physically rotting company. The shamelessness of the leaders is shown by the fact that they are so heroic in victimizing distant people knowing that they cannot do anything against them. A black mark to the apparent reputation of the leaders!” These pamphlets also include side-by-side Indonesian and Esperanto blurbs, including a review of a new book for Malaysian Esperanto learners – Esperanto caught on quickly in Asia, where it still enjoys widespread popularity. Of interest to Esperantistoj and historians of Esperanto.

Description
Sacramento, California, 1922. 17 ½ x 24 inches. Folded, small tears at folds, overall excellent.. In 1922, the United States Supreme Court decided United States v. Southern Pacific Company et al., declaring the Southern Pacific Company’s ownership of a controlling part—46%—of the Central Pacific Railroad’s stock in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, and requiring that this monopoly be dissolved. Offered here is a broadside produced by the Sacramento-based California Producers & Shippers Association which presents a collection of articles and editorials from area newspapers favorable to this “unmerger.” The broadside came in response to the Southern Pacific Company’s propaganda campaign against the dissolution; the Sacramento Tribune draws the reader’s attention to: “the efforts which have recently been made by the Southern Pacific Company to deceive their employe[e]s into protesting the separation of the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific on the ground that seniority and pension rights would be disturbed”. (August 25) Several articles present a statement by P.R. Thompson, chairman of the Peninsula Bureau Chamber of Commerce’s Transportation Committee, who accused Southern Pacific of having “distributed a great amount of misinformation, intended to becloud the issue and create opposition”. Thompson called the claim that employees would lose seniority and pension rights the “Most flagrant and most apparently manufactured out of whole cloth.” Other articles note that Southern Pacific had been sending delegates to various Chambers of Commerce around the region to push resolutions against the dissolution. The Porterville Messenger writes: “Chambers of Commerce are becoming suspicious of the sleek, well mannered, business like gentlemen who drop into town, urge a meeting of directors, make their discourse and expect to depart with a resolution in their pockets. Usually the proposed resolution will bear study— carefully. Just now the Colusa Chamber of Commerce is compelled to reverse itself on the S.P.-C.P. unmerger.” (August 25) The Sacramento Bee described the efforts of these delegates as an “attempt to stampede public sentiment” but claimed that Company’s “flood of propaganda” had “utterly failed of its objective” (September 9). Whatever the actual public sentiment may have been, in 1923 the Interstate Commerce Commission ordered that the railroads be allowed to remain merged. That year the federal government—largely influenced by famously anti-labor Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty—declined to appeal a district court decision overruling the Supreme Court in favor of the ICC. We find no record of this broadside in OCLC. Of interest to scholars of railroad, business, and legal history.

OCLC locates 9 copies of the first edition in North American law libraries (Columbia, Harvard, LA County, Library of Congress, State of Oregon, UC-Berkeley, University of Georgia, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania). Strasbourg: Berger-Levrault, 1845. First edition. 1845 FIRST COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY AND ANATOMY OF THE GIRAFFE ILLUSTRATED WITH FINE LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES BY TWO ZOOLOGISTS FROM TOULOUSE, FRANCE. 12 inches tall hardcover, marbled paper-covered boards, leather spine with gilt title, bookplate of NSR Maluf MD to front paste-down, marbled endpapers, [4], 124 pp, 17 lithographed plates. Light wear to cover edges, browning to title page and acknowledgment page, very light foxing of last 5 plates, very good in custom archival mylar cover. French language text. 14 copies Worldcat. NICOLAS JOLY (1812 - 1885) was a French zoologist from Toulouse. In 1830, he moved to Montpellier, where he taught German and earned a degree in Natural Sciences. In 1842, following the departure of Armand de Quatrefages to Paris, he was appointed to the Chair of Zoology of the Faculty of Sciences of Toulouse, where he taught for 36 years. In 1857 he became lecturer of anatomy and physiology at the Preparatory School of Medicine and Pharmacy of Toulouse. In 1870, he was appointed professor of physiology and in 1878 he retired as professor emeritus. ACHILLE LAVOCAT (born 1817) was Chief of Anatomy, Royal Veterinary Hospital of Toulouse. In a page of acknowledgments, the authors express their appreciation to the city of Toulouse and the Society of the Museum of Natural History of Strasbourg for providing them with the means to study the anatomy of "one of the most rare and unusual animals to leave the hands of the Creator." The animal was transported to Toulouse in 1843, and died the following year. The mayor of Toulouse presented the carcass to the authors, who dissected it over the ensuing 3 weeks, and a local taxidermist prepared the skin and skeleton for a display that remains a centerpiece of the Toulouse museum to the present day. The detailed plates depict not only the animal's anatomy of its musculoskeletal system and internal organs, but also representations of the giraffe through history. The text includes the most comprehensive bibliography of the biology and history of the giraffe available at the time.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1968. First edition thus. HUXLEY'S GROUNDBREAKING STUDY OF EVOLVED RITUALIZED BEHAVIOR IN SEXUAL SELECTION. 10.5x18.5 cm hardcover, black cloth binding, gilt title to spine, 97 pp, [2], 2 plates. Near fine in near fine dust jacket in protective mylar sleeve. LAID IN: Retrospective review of the book in Nature 25 Sept 2014, pages 484-5. " JULIAN HUXLEY (1887–1975) was an architect of the mid-twentieth-century evolutionary synthesis that merged Darwin's ideas on natural selection with population genetics. Decades before that, however, he helped to pioneer the field of animal behavior with his groundbreaking work on avian ethology, the 1914 Courtship Habits of the Great Crested Grebe. In it, he demonstrated how detailed observations of individual birds can prompt profound biological questions and sometimes reveal the outline of the answers. Huxley and his brother Trevenen spent two weeks watching the courtship of great crested grebes (Podiceps cristatus). They did so at a reservoir near the Hertfordshire town of Tring, now renowned as home to the matchless bird collections of the Natural History Museum. The result was a paper published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London in 1914 and later, in slightly abbreviated form, as a pocket-sized book. By the month of the brothers' observations, the grebes had already paired. Nevertheless, male and female, whose plumages are virtually identical, engaged in striking behaviors such as the "cat attitude" and the "penguin dance", as Huxley colorfully labelled them. These he interpreted as necessary to bring the two birds into what he perceived as the emotional synchrony needed for coition, nest-building and egg-laying. To achieve this, some behaviors have undergone a gradual change from useful action to symbol to ritual. It was Huxley's landmark paper that identified this process of ritualization in animal behavior (he organized a Royal Society symposium to discuss it in 1965). Huxley also realized that ritualization extended to mammals, including people. With a sprinkling of references to Dante, Plato and Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, he digresses to muse on how human courtship so often and so predictably proceeds from hand-holding to kissing to more. More formally, he realized that behaviors may be shaped by evolution."

Description
Boston / New York: Mariner Books / Harper Collins, 2021. 3rd Printing. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 5x1x8. 3rd printing. Spine ends very lightly bruised, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2021 Hard Cover. xxi, 440 pp. The first ever publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's final writings on Middle-earth, covering a wide range of subjects and perfect for those who have read and enjoyed The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle-earth, and want to learn more about Tolkien's magnificent world. It is well known that J.R.R. Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings in 1954 - 5. What may be less known is that he continued to write about Middle-earth in the decades that followed, right up until the years before his death in 1973. For him, Middle-earth was part of an entire world to be explored, and the writings in The Nature of Middle-earth reveal the journeys that he took as he sought to better understand his unique creation. From sweeping themes as profound as Elvish immortality and reincarnation, and the Powers of the Valar, to the more earth-bound subjects of the lands and beasts of Numenor, the geography of the Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor, and even who had beards! This new collection, which has been edited by Carl F. Hostetter, one of the world's leading Tolkien experts, is a veritable treasure-trove offering readers a chance to peer over Professor Tolkien's shoulder at the very moment of discovery: and on every page, Middle-earth is once again brought to extraordinary life.
