The 200 plates are songs, headed and surrounded with pictorial embellishments illustrative of the song ..., and engraved in the style of and even copied directly from Gravelot and Watteau. This work was the first of its kind to be published in England and quickly produced imitators such as Lampe's British Melody, engraved by Benjamin Cole. A second edition, corrected by Lampe, was also issued in parts (1740-41), and a third, printed from the original plates, appeared in 1765, issued by John Ryall. Other musical works engraved by Bickham include Songs in the Opera of Flora (1737), An Easy Introduction to Dancing (1738) and the frontispiece for Simpson's The Delightful Pocket Companion for the German Flute (c1745)." Frank Kidson, et al. in Grove Music Online The Musical Entertainer is considered to be one of the finest 18th century illustrated books. Complete copies of this monumental work, particularly with the subscribers list, are quite rare.

Description
Moscow (Москва): Kinopechat (Кинопечать), 1926. First edition. Softcover. Good to very good condition. Octavo. 80pp. Dark blue and white wrappers with constructivist typography on the front cover, housed in modern blue heavy paper portfolio with printed typographic design of original cover pasted to cover flap. Publisher's device on title page. This scarce published screenplay for the film adaptation of Sholem Aleichem's novel "Wandering Stars", by the acclaimed Russian-Jewish novelist, playwright and journalist Isaac Babel (1894-1940). The film was premiered in Kiev on January 4th 1927 and was directed by Grigori Gritscher-Tscherikower (1883-1945). It was produced by VUFKU studios, the national film studios of the Ukrainian SSR. This book contains the entirety of the film's screenplay, accompanied by three striking b/w illustrations by Soviet artist and designer Alexander Bykhovskii (1888-1978), who likely also created the striking cover. The final three pages contain publisher's ads, listing other work on the topic of cinema. The story tells of the love between Leibel, the son of a wealthy shtetl family, and Reizel, a poor cantor's daughter in Bessarabia. The two run off to join a traveling Yiddish theater group. They are later separated, with each becoming successful in their own right, only to eventually reunite in America. The work was first serialized and originally appeared in the Warsaw newspapers between 1909 and 1911. It has come to be seen as the third in an unofficial trilogy of novels by the writer, centering on musicians or performers, preceded by Stempenyu (1888) and The Nightingale (1889). In 1925 the Moscow State Jewish Theater suggested that the Goskino (the Soviet State Film Studio) produce a film adaptation of Sholem Aleichem’s novel. The order was commissioned to Isaac Babel for translation and adaptation from the book's original Yiddish language to Russian, for the screenplay. During this period Babel had been working on other translations of Yiddish literature into Russian including the collected works of Sholem Aleichem and work by David Bergelson. According to Babel's foreword printed here, he faced a number of difficulties adapting the novel, including the modification of petty bourgeoisie motifs as well as the changes of film directors and their differing requirements. Because of certain elements in the script, of which the main committee of the Goskino did not approve, the film's production had to ultimately be switched to VUFKU studios in Odessa. In a letter during the period of production Babel apparently wrote: “I will have to be present on the set... if I am not there, the director will ruin everything" and later, upon hearing of further changes made by Gritscher-Tscherikower, wrote that "it is more profitable for me not to participate in this shameful production”. Regardless of Babel's opinion of the final product, the film was well received by Soviet audiences at the time. Text in Russian. Portfolio with minor wear. Wraps partially restored with minor wear. Previous owner's names and date at top of title page, one near gutter. Light water staining along right half of bottom edge of first 30 pages, reappearing from pages 40 to end though along lower part of foredge, more pronounced on pages 75/76, and light fraying along foredge from pages 67 to 76. Block lightly age-toned.

Description
Tokyo: Nihon Rikkokai, 1942. Very good.. [1],[3],[7],26,[336]pp. Original pictorial wrappers printed in blue and brown. Moderate foxing and soiling, minor edge wear to wrappers, some scuffing and minor losses to front wrapper. Text somewhat foxed and evenly toned, reflecting wartime book production standards. A very rare work encouraging Japanese civilians "of all classes" to emigrate to the Pacific regions now controlled by the Empire of Japan after the outbreak of World War II, namely Thailand, Burma, and the Philippines. There is even one short chapter describing Hawaii, though that was certainly wishful thinking at the time. The book adopts contemporary imperial Japanese expansionist rhetoric, referring in the introduction to Japan's "great global mission...to guide and educate the world's 1.2 billion human beings." The work includes chapters on preparing for overseas travel, etiquette, immigrant hygiene, overseas child education, information on the military, and more. Following the main text is a twenty-six-page section of vocabulary translated from Japanese to Malay. The author, Shigeshi Nagata was a former Issei (Japanese-born immigrant to the United States) who became disillusioned by the increasing anti-Japanese sentiment in California and started advocating for new Japanese colonies in Brazil (which would become the largest Japanese emigrant community in the New World. Nagata took over the Nihon Rikkokai, a Christian organization that promoted the idea of immigration to the poor in Japan, beginning in 1897. No copies in the United States, and just a single copy in OCLC, at the National Diet Library in Japan.

Description
[Connecticut, 1969. Near Fine. Two gelatin silver prints (20” x 14 ½”) and (19 ½” x 14”), each Signed by the photographer. A few tiny specks on the image surface of one print, the smaller print is a little unevenly trimmed at the blank margins, near fine. Two large, striking images of the Swedish-born American sculptor Claes Oldenburg, best known for his public art installations typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects. The photographs were likely taken at New Haven, Connecticut, when Oldenburg surreptitiously erected his monumental tube of lipstick sprouting from a military vehicle: “Lipstick (Ascending) on Caterpillar Tracks” on the campus of Yale University amidst the 1969 student protests against the Vietnam War. The photographs were taken by the Connecticut photographer and graphic artist Joel Katz. A student of Walker Evans at the Yale School of Art, Katz won the Henry H. Strong Prize for American Literature in 1965 for his photographic essay of African-Americans in Mississippi taken during the Freedom Summer of 1964. Two beautifully composed images of Oldenburg, in one of which he shown gazing upward alongside what almost certainly appears to be his monumental tube of lipstick.

Description
JOSEPH BRADLEY VARNUM (1750/1751-1821). Varnum was a long-time Massachusetts politician affiliated with the Democratic-Republican Party. He served as a Congressman from 1895-1811, including as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1807 to 1811, and a Senator from 1811 to 1817, including as President Pro Tempore from 1813 to 1814. AL. 2 pg. 8 x 10. January 22, 1803. An autographed letter, though unsigned, from Joseph Bradley Varnum to an unidentified individual. The document is in response to a letter previously written by the individual: Pray Sir what is your precise meaning when you say, you wish to have our own Countrymen put in office in preference to any other under heaven and in pursuing the Idea You say that you presume we have Men of our own Country that are Qualified to fill any office, if not you say, let us give up our Independence to foreigners. After summarizing why the receiver cannot mean actual foreign citizens, Varum writes: There is but one other point of light in which I can possibly view your meaning, and that never would have entered my head had it not been Suggested by others. I must then take it for granted, that you have adopted the idea of distinction between a natural born Citizen, and one who has been born in another Country, and hath since become a Citizen. This distinction has been lately taken by the federal partyto figure to themselves a more plausible pretext for calumy Mr. Gallatin, the present Secretary of the Treasury, and imbitter the minds of the people against him. Nothing of this kind was said by them when Mr. Hamilton was in the same office nowand in fact it ought, for he as well as Mr. Gallatin was, by the Constitution, entitled to all the privileges of a natural born Citizen. By the Constitution of the United States, and by the Laws which have been passed agreeable to it, provided, that every person who is a naturalized Citizen, shall be intitled to all the privileges and amenities of a free born Citizen, except only that of being elected President of the U.S. This letter is excellent insight into anti-immigrant sentiment in the early days of the republic. Most often, the Alien & Sedition Acts are seen as evidence of opposition to foreign and foreign-born influence in the United States, but the treatment of Albert Gallatin, the Swiss-born longest-serving Secretary of the Treasury and founder of New York University, among other accomplishments, is a striking example. Gallatin was often portrayed as a corrupting, un-American, manipulative influence on Presidents Jefferson and Madison. A typed transcription is included, though it incorrectly gives the year of the letter as 1863, among other relatively minor errors. The letter is in fine condition.

It includes over 150 individual pieces of ephemera. The archive was maintained by the chairman, Fred K. Reigner. The categories include: Civil Air Patrol Notices 1953 Newspaper Clippings Letters Received Letters mailed and an array of loose materials including the layout of the Pottstown Airport, a revoked Civil Patrol airman's card, an insignia circular, menus and invitations for local events and fly-ins and much more. For a comprehensive description click HERE. In November of 1953, the Pottstown chapter of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) - a social club for men interested in planes and aviation - elected Fred K Reigner as their new Chairman. The Chairman had a lot of responsibilities, especially in the Pottstown AOPA – JB “Doc” Hartranft, the President of the AOPA in 1953, was quoted in a local Pennsylvania newspaper complimenting the chapter, saying “you folks really do what you plan.” As Chairman, Frank K Reigner planned dozens of outings around Pennsylvania and beyond, sending letters almost daily to coordinate their meetings and social events. In one binder, he kept his notes and copies of all his correspondence for the year he was Chairman, leaving behind an incredible snapshot of the world of the AOPA in the 1950s.

Good to very good. Rust staining from staples, a couple other stains. Light toning, corners bumped, otherwise in very nice shape
Description
Woodbury, New Jersey: G.G. Green, 1915. Good to very good. Rust staining from staples, a couple other stains. Light toning, corners bumped, otherwise in very nice shape.. A beautifully designed 1915 almanac promoting mail-order medicines sold by G.G. Green. This particular Green almanac courts a more wealthy or up-market clientele. The front depicts Columbia with her shield and a cornucopia of Green's medicines, looking out onto a grand scene showing "Industry and Commerce" spurred on by land and sea. The back is equally fascinating, and depicts well-heeled gentlemen and gentlewomen attending a silent film accompanied by an orchestra. The moving picture on screen depicts white men defending their covered wagons carrying Green's medicines from Native American men on horses, depicted stereotypically to evoke fear and anger from white audiences. An interesting display of social thoughts and values at the time. Content inside the almanac includes astronomical phenomena for the upcoming year, weather, cartoons, descriptions and pitches for patent medicines by Green, medical and health advice, and monthly charts for recording weather and other information. Note the misogynistic cartoon on p.31 reinforcing the sexist belief that women should not have their own bank accounts and financial independence. before the 1960s, women could not open their own bank accounts without permission from a husband or introduction from a man. Also features a rather disturbing cartoon on p.9 that somehow manages to be sexist, racist, and classist, all that the same time. Single vol. (9" by 6.75"), pp. 32, illus., in original illus. wrps printed in red and blue with Columbia on front, theater on back. This 1915 almanac not in WorldCat (Feb. 2025). George Gill Green (1842-1925) served as a surgeon in the Union army during the Civil War, and went on to start his wholesale drug business in 1867. Green was one of the most successful early patent medicine entrepreneurs, and built a successful clientele based on a mail-order business model.

Association Copy, INSCRIBED in the year of publication by the author on the front endpaper to playwright George Middleton: "To George Middleton / with affectionate regards / David Belasco / October 1928." Middleton's nephew David's ownership stamp on the front pastedown. New Jersey-born playwright, director, and producer George Middleton served as president of the Dramatists Guild of America from 1927 to 1929. He is perhaps best remembered today for his instrumental role in creating the Minimum Basic Agreement, a collective bargaining agreement that covers benefits, rights, and protections for Writers Guild of America members. Middleton was also known for his collaborations with Guy Bolton, including the successful 1917 stage comedy "Polly With a Past," basis for the 1920 film adaptation. Very Good lacking the dust jacket. Leipzig, Wien, Zurich: Internationaler Psy, 1923. FIRST EDITION. With 1 woodcut diagram. Bound into modern cloth-back boards; an excellent copy with pencil annotations in the text. First edition of the author's fundamental contribution to psychoanalysis. In this work, Freud formulates his revolutionary tripartite theory of personality, based on his earlier discovery of repression and of the unconscious complexes which influence the conscious mind. It is also here that the concept of Superego, the agent which coerces the self to meet learned standards and ideas, is introduced for the first time. Grinstein 10482; Heirs of Hippocrates 1129.

San Francisco: Wahlgreen Co., 1915. Very good. First edition; folded to a pocket size; unfolded - 11 x 32; two maps to recto and verso; tiny nicks to intersections of folds and a few minor spots to edges; faint pen check mark to front panel; in very good condition. A rare publication, it was printed by the Wahlgreen Company (a well-known San Francisco publisher of official guides, art books, and catalogs for major events, focusing on fine printing and detailed art/architectural documentation) for the Southern Pacific Company and their "Southern Pacific Day" during the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. A program for that day was included on verso, showing a time table of events, order of march, etc. The first map, a very-large, panoramic one, showed the layout of the temporary city built on the shores of the San Francisco Bay, the key buildings, athletic fields, promenades, roadways, streets, entertainment zones, and even parking lots for automobiles. The second, smaller map on verso outlined Southern Pacific's Sunset, Ogden, and Shasta Routes and connections.

Burlington, VT: Wells & Richardson Co., 1885. Very good. Large advertising card, n. d. (ca 1885); 7 1/2 x 5 1/2; chromolithographed illustration and subtitles to recto, text to verso; slight diagonal crease to left half; a few small rubbed spots to verso (most probably removed from a scrap book); small round punch-hole to top margin (for hanging [?]); overall in very good condition. A beautiful advertisement for baby food, the card featured the portraits of four babies, identified with their names, their parents' names, and places of birth and letters from the mothers, expressing their gratitude for Lactated Food's saving the lives of the infants, who had been uninterested in any other kind of food. Based on lactose, it was "hailed by the medical profession as the best of its kind with which they were acquainted." It was also said to be the standard in asylums and hospitals, for invalids, convalescents, and mentally ill. The company was very succesful, with branches in England and other European countries.

Description
Single sheet measuring 12 x 15 ½ inches. Some chips and tears, repaired with archival tape, with no significant loss of text. 1833 Maynard's Earliest known manuscript – hand-drawn map and letter - by the Dentist who would become the leading gun inventor of the Civil War. The note reads: "I can do nothing toward finishing the map until I have the distances which I have marked...If you can ascertain these distances, I think I can get along. P.S. When you have marked the distances on the lines, hand the sheet to Father, and he will send to bring it to me…Put the distances down in chains and links...The scale I use is set for that way of measuring…" Ten years before the Civil War, Maynard, then a popular Washington, D.C. dentist, invented the breech-loading gun known as the Maynard Carbine, which would be used by thousands of Union and Confederate Cavalry soldiers. This map, drawn 20 years before, as a 19- or 20-year-old West Point dropout, may be the earliest known example of his youthful talents. (The Maynard Papers at the Library of Congress apparently date from 1836, after he had relocated to Washington.) When young Maynard drew this map of the properties adjacent to the farm of his father, a New York state legislator and County Sheriff, he had just quit West Point where he had found the drill too strenuous for his "delicate health". Returning to his home in Sherburn to begin the self-study of surveying, civil engineering, drawing, architecture and anatomy - all in preparation for his chosen career of Dentistry – he began to design and forge his own dental instruments, personally welding iron and steel at a local blacksmith's shop, some of his inventions accepted as brilliant innovations in Dental instrumentation of the time. After briefly practicing Dentistry in Utica, in 1835, he moved permanently to Washington, D.C., where, in addition to his dental practice, he displayed skill in wood engraving, wood carving, clay modeling, painting and architectural drawing (which "ranked with the best efforts of the most accomplished experts.") Working for a time in Europe as "Imperial Court Dentist" to the Czar of Russia, he returned to Washington to care for the teeth of an exclusive clientele that included several Presidents, being renowned in the capital as the first American Dentist to fill teeth with gold foil. But all this was prelude to the firearms invention that made him world famous among military professionals. In 1845 he patented a system of priming consisting of a coiled, tape-like paper strip containing fifty fulminate caps spaced at equal distances apart, and a mechanism which automatically fed the tape, a cap at a time, from the recess of the gun in which it was protected, into position for firing. The Maynard tape primer, as it was called, was adopted by the federal government and generally used by the governments of Europe. In 1851 he patented an improvement in breech-loading rifles here which, with subsequent improvements made by him in the succeeding fourteen years, brought about the general adoption of the Maynard rifle by governments and sportsmen throughout the world. Prior to 1886 he patented also a number of minor improvements in firearms, including a method of converting muzzle-loaders into breech-loaders; a method of joining two rifle or shotgun barrels to permit a longitudinal expansion or contraction; and a device to indicate the number of cartridges in a magazine of a repeating firearm. Description
New York: Osprey, 2009. 1st Printing. Soft Cover. Very Good. 7x0x9. Hook, Adam. First printing. Covers toned. 2009 Soft Cover. 64 pp. Germany's Atlantic Wall was the most ambitious military fortification program of World War II. Following its conquest of Western Europe, Germany had to defend some 5,000 kilometers of Atlantic coastline from the Spanish border to the Arctic Circle. The United States' entry into the war and the inevitability of an Anglo-American landing in Western Europe resulted in the fortification of this coastline along its entire length. Focusing on the northern Atlantic Wall in the Low Countries and Scandinavia, this title addresses the special defensive features and unique aspects of fortification in these countries, such as the early focus on fortifying Norway, due to early British commando raids; the greater use of turreted naval guns; and the establishment of first-line Flak defenses in the Low Countries to counter the Allied strategic bombing campaign.
