AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A DUTCH BOOK OF HOURS, WITH A VERY FINE MINIATURE OF THE HARROWING OF HELL BY THE MASTERS OF THE DELFT HALF-LENGTH FIGURES
Seller
Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books and Medieval Manuscripts (United States)
Description
Delft, ca. 1470. Leaf: 175 x 122 mm. (6 7/8 x 4 3/4"); Frame: 250 x 195 mm. (9 3/4 x 7 3/4"). No text on recto or verso. In an attractive wooden frame. A FINELY PAINTED MINIATURE OF THE HARROWING OF HELL within an arch-topped compartment, the mouth of hell depicted on the left with a fiery red interior and five people emerging from it, the figure of Christ on the left, holding a cross on a long staff and half-clothed in a pink and blue robe, the background with a castle in the distance, ALL OF THIS BENEATH A VERY DETAILED ARCHITECTURAL CANOPY suspended in the sky, AND THE WHOLE WITHIN A FULL BORDER of acanthus leaves and other foliage and flowers in reds, blues, greens, yellows, and brushed gold, along with very many small burnished gold ivy leaves and buds on hairline stems, a small stork in the bottom border and a large delicately shaded angel in the left border. ◆Left margin trimmed very close to decoration (just escaping loss, and the other three margins ample), mild darkening right at fore and tail edge (but not reaching into borders), otherwise IN FINE CONDITION, the colors rich and true, and the burnished gold still shimmering. This extraordinary miniature, notable for its uncommon subject matter, memorable imagery, and fine workmanship, was produced by a talented artist belonging to the stylistic group known as the Masters of the Delft Half-Length Figures. The subject here is infrequently depicted in Books of Hours: the Harrowing of Hell appears as a full-page miniature in only three of the 119 prayer books described by Roger Wieck in his "Time Sanctified" (and three others contain a Harrowing depiction inside an initial). Christian theological tradition tells us that after his crucifixion, Christ went to liberate souls from Limbo--a location inhabited by those barred from entry into Heaven because they died before the Redemption. In our scene, Christ, wrapped in a regal cloak and carrying a long staff, his hands and feet still bleeding from the wounds he received on the Cross, reaches into an absolutely wonderful Hellmouth to extricate Adam and Eve and other naked souls, while the recently deceased and original saint, John the Baptist, still clad in an animal skin garment, waits patiently for his turn to emerge. The great maw of Hell as depicted here has bulging eyes, a distended snout, thickly matted hair, and a bad complexion; his gaping mouth, punctuated by sharp gray teeth, glows red hot, and one can tell from the creature's expression that he is loath to comply with this rescue of souls. In addition to its compelling subject matter, there is a high level of artistic achievement here, including delicately molded figures, impressively detailed architectural elements, and a lovely color palette. The elegance and quiet sophistication observed in this miniature distinguishes the artist responsible for this work as a particularly talented member of his circle. Active from about 1450-80, the Masters of the Delft Half-Length Figures were named by James Marrow after the angels and other figures whose upper bodies are typically found emerging from a cloud within the borders. Although the present leaf uncharacteristically contains a full-length angel in the border, it shares other stylistic similarities, such as the elaborate architectural canopy hovering over the main composition; and it particularly resembles the work of the artist of Keble College MS 77, an illuminator described in "The Golden Age of Dutch Manuscript Illumination" as "one of the more articulate of the group" whose "figures are more fully modelled and his palette . . . deeper and brighter" than that of his contemporaries. Because the subject of the present miniature goes beyond the standard image program seen in routine productions, and because of the high level of artistic accomplishment seen here, this leaf was almost certainly part of an elaborate Book of Hours produced in response to an important commission..

Description
Mexico: Por los Herederos de la Viuda de Bernardo Calderon, 1698. Good.. [12] 297 pages. Quarto. Contemporary vellum, moderate wear; lacking endpapers, scattered worming and wear, slightly affecting text; minor dampstaining. Scattered contemporary manuscript annotations; early owner's signature on title page and notes on rear flyleaf. The first and only edition of this life of Garabito, a Mexican cleric who was one of very few colonial administrators to physically spend time in the "barbarous" provinces of Coahuila (at the time encompassing modern-day Texas) and Nuevo León. Garabito officially served as Bishop of Guadalajara (Jalisco), but his initial remit extended all the way to California and Coahuila until he was able to appoint administrators in those regions in the 1680s. Among his surviving manuscript edicts are several forcing clerics to the learn indigenous languages (in order to proselytize more effectively) and others stressing "el buen tratamiento de los indios." In 1676, the Andalusian-born Garabito was appointed to the bishopric of Puerto Rico, and subsequently the next year accepted the far more prestigious office of Bishop of Guadalajara in Nueva Galicia, today known as Jalisco; the territory also included the provinces of Nayarit, the Californias, the Nuevo Reyno de León and Coahuila. The present work includes information on his election as bishop of Puerto Rico and then Guadalajara; a description of his voyage to and arrival in Mexico; and about twelve pages concerning his time in the "tierra de Infieles," or "Barbaras Provincias del Naiarit, y Coahuila." This propensity for travel and a hands-on approach earned Garabito the nickname (used in this book) of the "Missionero-Obispo." He lived up to the nickname, as in 1682, for example, when he travelled to visit missionary stations in Monterrey. Later in his career, Garabito retired to the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Zapopan, just outside of Guadalajara, and in his will he stipulated that an image of the miraculous Virgin of Zapopan be sent back to Coahuila. The present work also includes a selection of poems composed in Garabito's honor by his fellow clerics, namely José de Arguin (pp.4-5); Miguel de Ortega (p.5, p.272), Bernardo de Riofrio (p.269), José de Mora y Cuellar (p.270), Felipe de Figueroa (pp.270-1), and Christoval de Palma y Messa (p.271). OCLC shows just a handful of copies worldwide, with one in the United States at the Bancroft; Iberian Books adds copies at the Lilly (heavily wormed) and the University of Texas. We could locate no copies having sold at auction. Medina Mexico 1690. Iberian Books 71987 (erroneously calling for only 10 pp of prelims). Sabin 11418. Ildefonso, Los Tlaxcaltecas en Coahuila (1999), pp.115-122 (reproducing his manuscript edicts on languages and the treatment of the Indians).

Description
Westminster: The Beaumont Press, 1919 Illustrated with hand colored woodcuts by Anne Estelle Rice. First edition, limited issue of 200 numbered copies, this being one of 50 copies printed on cartridge paper. Publisher's green cloth and yellow patterned boards, lettered in gilt. About fine, corners very lightly bumped, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, fresh interior. A beautiful copy. Roberts A12.b. An exceedingly rare publication, Bay was first published in several short print runs. This first edition is one of 200 copies, and only 50 copies, like this copy, are printed on cartridge paper with hand colored illustrations. According to the publisher, roughly 25 of the 50 cartridge paper copies were not sold due to an accident, lowering the total number of obtainable copies of Bay to 175 (63 of which are housed in institutional libraries' special collections) and making these copies the scarcest of the three variants. The remaining 150 copies are comprised of 120 copies printed on handmade paper (A12.a) and 30 printed on Japanese vellum and signed by the author and illustrator (A12.c). Bay is a collection of eighteen of Lawrence's poems, including "The Little Town at Evening," "After the Opera," "Bombardment," "Bread Upon the Waters," "Tommies in the Train," "War-Baby," and "Nostalgia," among others. As Roberts explains in his bibliography, these poems "comprise the greater part of Lawrence's literary reaction to the war." Notably, Bay was the first of Lawrence's books to be "issued in an expensive format from a private press," a practice he would continue with many of his subsequent works.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Illus. by Rice, Anne Estelle.

Description
1862. Whistler, James McNeill. Signed albumen photograph of Blue and Silver: The Blue Wave, Biarritz, after the 1862 painting, a document of the Aesthetic Movement and Whistler's articulation of "art for art's sake" within nineteenth century British and transatlantic visual culture. The original canvas, executed following Whistler's stay in Biarritz, exemplifies his restrained tonal harmonies and emphasis on atmospheric effect rather than narrative or moral instruction. In rejecting overt sentimentality and literary subject matter, Whistler advanced a theory of painting grounded in formal relationships of color and composition, positioning himself at the forefront of debates over aesthetic autonomy in Victorian art. The present signed photographic reproduction extends that philosophy into the sphere of photographic dissemination, reinforcing the circulation and reception of his coastal studies among collectors and fellow artists. Whistler, James McNeill. Signed albumen photograph of Blue and Silver: The Blue Wave, Biarritz. No place, no date. Albumen print affixed to ecru mount, image approximately 14 x 11 inches, overall approximately 24 x 21 inches framed. Signed on the mount with Whistler's butterfly device. Provenance: private collection of artist Chancery Ryder. The butterfly signature, which Whistler developed as a distinctive artistic monogram, functioned as both personal emblem and aesthetic statement, underscoring the unity of design and authorship central to his practice. Photographic reproductions of his paintings played a significant role in shaping his reputation across Britain, France, and the United States, particularly as debates surrounding modernism and aesthetic theory intensified in the later nineteenth century. Minor surface wear consistent with age; mount stable; signature clear and legible. Overall condition: very good.

Very Good+ in Very Good dj
Description
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1955). First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [minor soiling/spotting to pages edges, otherwise a solid clean copy; jacket faded at spine, some wear to corners, a few closed tears, scraping/creasing to rear panel]. Novel about "one of the greatest jazz pianists ever heard on the South Side of Chicago," a supremely talented but self-centered and rebellious musician who "wasn't interested in making money or cutting records or pleasing the crowds who flocked to hear him." Although the book's protagonist, "Virgil Jones" (a white guy, by the way), doesn't appear to have been based directly on any real-life figure, in the words of one critic, he "does personify the ideal of the cool jazz musician of the 1950s," and his integrity and fierce independence bring him into conflict with the jazz establishment, represented by a rival pianist, a powerful agent, and a venal critic. Whitmore never published another novel, but he went on to enjoy a long and successful career as a TV writer (among his credits are the pilot and several episodes of "The Fugitive"). .
