Description
London: Printed by Arnold Hatfield, 1603. First Edition. Very good. First complete edition in English, containing everything you’d ever want to know of what Romans thought about private (daily) life. An essential, balancing compendium for all the Roman history books (the historiographer’s question is always, what else was going on?). It’s a spectacular read, but you better wipe off your magnifying glasses because this book is 1,400 pages of well-spaced, but small type. Full mottled calf by Riviere & Son (signed on the verso of the front free endpaper), morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, woodcut initials and headpieces, rebacked, a few faint scratches, tiny chip (paper flaw?) from the title page’s edge, but fine, and complete with the errata. The condition is exceptional for this book. Ugly copies abound but no copy like ours has sold at auction or in the trade since this one sold at Sotheby’s, in 1989, for $4,675 (expensive then and expensive now, but the finest of copies usually are). Ex–James Hale Bates (1845–1901) the American travel writer, with his armorial bookplate upside down on the rear endpaper. Ex–The Garden Limited (see below), their bookplate also upside down next to Bates’ (the error in placement certainly made by Bates, The Garden owners intentionally followed suit). 4 p.l., 1363, [1] pp., [32] leaves. Ref: STC 20063. ESTC S115981. Harris, p. 116. Lowndes III, 1891. The exalted Elizabethan translator Philemon Holland (1552–1637) was a physician and Latinist whose love of the classics prompted his devotion to rendering ancient authors into the language of Shakespeare, and his output was prodigious. His first project was a translation of the Roman historian Livy, published in 1600. The next year, Holland tackled Pliny’s massive Natural History (he also translated significant historical works of Suetonius (1606) and Ammianus Marcellinus (1609). The contents of the Morals are amazing. They confront a wild range of topics, embracing fortune, exile, animal intelligence, health, advice for newlyweds, the education of children, benefitting from one’s enemies, the value of having few or many friends, how to recognize a flatterer, and 10 times as many more. And though Catullus’ neoteric poems, and some documents survive, the primary (only?) other source of the private details of Roman daily life beyond this book, is just graffiti on the walls of Roman ruins, like at Pompeii. Individual Plutarch treatises had been previously translated into English, some more liberally than others, but this is the first translation of the entire sequence of essays that make up the “Moralia.” Further, the value of the collection is enhanced because Plutarch borrows from lost Greek works, some of which would otherwise be unknown to us. The modern provenance here is at the zenith. It’s no hyperbole to say that the collection of The Garden Ltd. was the most outstanding American library of notable books put together in the second half of the 20th century. It was comprised of high spots from all periods, breathtaking in their impeccable condition. It included the last 1st edition seen of Cervantes’ 1605 Don Quixote, and a set of Shakespeare’s 4 folios (bought by Dick Manney, and then bought by us from Sotheby’s by private treaty in 1991). Does this collection have a backstory? It does. Haven O’More, was a genial narcissist with an autobiography fattened on bombastic exaggeration. His oft asked question was, “Do you know who I am?” It should have been, “Do you know who I think I am?” He found a rich investor, Michael Davis, and with Davis’ loot he built a staggering library, in awe-inspiring condition, that he planned to place at the center of his zanily conceived, “new sacred city.” But O’More was holding aces and eights, and after a public confrontation at Christies over a Gutenberg Bible, Davis got bored with O’More’s antics and forced a 1989 sale at Sotheby’s, titled The Garden Ltd.

Description
London: Chiswick Press, 1837. New edition. Fine. A Fine copy. Octavo (8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches; 216 x 134 mm.). xxiv, 640 pp. Forty-five engraved vignette illustrations, with numerous engravings of flora, fauna, and landscapes in the text. Verso of front free endpaper with rectangular bookplate of Thos. D. Murphy. Bound ca. 1910 in a stunning Art Nouveau binding of dark green crushed morocco, handsomely gilt and inlaid, by Kelliegram (stamp-signed in gilt on rear watered silk endleaf) Covers with fanciful Art Nouveau-style frame formed by inlaid flowers of red and blue and leaves in two shades of green, these inlays connected by gilt dots, and the spaces between them featuring swooping gilt birds and sprinklings of gilt dots; raised bands, spine compartments tooled in gilt with similar inlaid leaves and flowers, turn-ins with gilt tendrils and continuing the bird, flower, and leaf motifs, the turn-ins enclosing pictorial morocco doublures, the front doublure depicting Gilbert White's vine-covered house in Selborne, the rear a slate-roofed country church and cemetery, moss green watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Original cloth spine bound in at rear. This New Edition, with notes by Edward Turner Bennett and others, is a lovely copy of White's beloved account of the wonders of nature, offered in a very pleasing pictorial binding from the firm that is best known for that kind of work. First published in 1789, White attempts to inspire readers to observe in their own backyards, "is open to everyone, for everyone has observed much of what it describes. Writer and reader each share the inheritance of the natural world, and delight in what is given, so that Selbourne becomes an expression of universal thanksgiving, treasured by all." (DNB) This cover design is animated and unusual, the gilt birds in flight adding a charming note of whimsy to the graceful Art Nouveau design. As with many Kelliegram bindings, pictorial inlays are prominently featured - though here they are atypically large and found inside, rather than on, the covers. The doublures represent two things dear to White's heart: his Selbourne home, "The Wakes," and a small country church like the one where he served as a perpetual curate, forsaking a more brilliant career in the church or at Oxford in order to remain in the place that he loved. The doublure scenes employ at least ten different consonant colors of morocco and much incising to give a fine level of detail. This copy makes for a prime example of a Kelliegram binding. The London-based firm Kelly and Sons was one of the longest running in the trade. Started in 1770 by John Kellie, various family members continued the business into the early twentieth century. Fine.

His book focuses on his first years in California, centering on his experience as practicing attorney and the first alcalde for the mining town of Marysville, 1850-57. In the second section, he relates anecdotes of his later career as justice, first of the California Supreme Court, then of the U.S. Supreme Court. Paris: Chez Marcilly fils aîné, [1824]. 105 x 63 mm. (4 1/8 x 2 1/2"). 6 p.l., 48 pp., [12] leaves. Publisher's green paper boards with Neoclassical engraved decorations, gilt edges, IN THE VERY FRAGILE ORIGINAL MATCHING PULL-OFF CASE. Housed in a fine modern linen custom clamshell box, green morocco label on spine. Engraved title page with vignette, six engraved plates with original tissue guards, engraved cover and 12 engraved vignette headpieces for the ladies' appointment calendar at rear. From the Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin Collection of Publishers' Bookbindings. A hint of soiling and chafing to boards and slipcase, isolated faint foxing to contents, but A VERY FINE SPECIMEN, WITH ALMOST NO SIGNS OF USE. This charming little almanac contains romantic poems and engravings of young lovers in addition to a calendar with saints' days and phases of the moon, as well as a section (unused) for making notes and jotting down appointments. Our copy is remarkably well preserved, down to the delicate paper pull-off case. It comes from the splendid collection of publisher's bindings assembled over three decades by Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin, and exhibited at the Grolier Club in 2000. In a review of the sumptuous catalogue for the exhibition, written for the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, Andrea Krupp praises the "pristine condition" of this "glittering and opulent collection." ..

Sherpix; SF International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. No binding. Fine. [New York; San Francisco]: Sherpix, 1971; SF International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, 1989. Set of 4 vintage original black-and-white photos: two 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) and two 5 x 7" (13 x 18 cm) from a screening at the 1989 San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. All fine. Classic and very early gay underground movie. "Between visits from his keeper (or John) a handsome male prostitute (Bobby Kendall), alone in his apartment, lounges, fantasizing about worlds where he is the central character. For example, he pictures himself as a matador, a Roman slave boy and the emperor who condemns him, and the keeper of a male harem for whom another male performs a belly dance. "The film is mostly shot on 8 mm film with bright, otherworldly lighting and intense colors. Aside from its last, climactic scene (which was shot in a downtown Manhattan loft), it was produced in its entirety (including outdoor scenes) in director James Bidgood's small New York City apartment over a seven-year period (1963-70). It was ultimately released without the consent of the director, who therefore had himself credited as Anonymous. He stated in an interview, "See, why I took my name off of it was that I was protesting, which I'd heard at the time that's what you did..." "Because the name of the filmmaker was not widely known, there were rumors that Andy Warhol was behind it. In the mid-1990s, writer Bruce Benderson began a search for its maker based on several leads and finally verified that it was James Bidgood, who was still living in Manhattan and was working on a film script. In 1999, a book researched and written by Benderson was published by Taschen about Bidgood's body of photographic and filmic work. "Bidgood's unmistakably kitschy style was later imitated and refined by artists such as Pierre et Gilles." (Wikipedia) The tiny cast included the legendary Charles Ludlam. This film barely received a theatrical release, and so any original American paper from it is really rare.

Description
Paris: La Science Spirituelle, 1948. FIRST EDITION. Original printed wrappers (faded). An excellent copy. First edition of this strange attempt to reconcile anthroposophy with Christian esoterism. Followers of anthroposophy believe in a comprehensive spiritual realm that can be accessed by humankind through non-sensory independent thought. Here Coroze asserts that the same kind of mental exercise can be applied to Christian teachings. The text argues that the mainstream human experience is not intellectually complex enough to fathom the full Biblical paradigm, and thus it can only be understood through esoteric spiritual encounters. Coroze goes on to align the Biblical narrative of resurrection of souls with the theosophical theories of the spirit realm. This volume is the Spring 1948 publication in the series Les Documents Anthroposophiques, which promoted the theosophical work of Rudolf Steiner. OCLC records one copy in the U.S. (NY Public).

Description
Princeton: The William Blake Trust/Princeton University Press, 1995. Hardcover. Very good/very good +. Hardcover. 12" X 8 1/2". 367pp. Presents nicely in protective archival sleeved dust jacket. Gentle shelfwear to dust jacket, with some bumping to head and tail of spine. Bound in full dark brown cloth, with spine lettered in gilt. A hint of shelfwear to binding, else fine. Binding is firm, tight, and sound. Pages are clean, bright, and unmarked. A very presentable hardcover in dust jacket of this fourth volume of The William Blake Trust and Princeton University Press' Illuminated Books of William Blake. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The last volumes in the series of William Blake's Illuminated Books reveal the writer and artist as a prophet driven by a sense of apocalyptic urgency. Blake conceived and executed The Continental Prophecies and The Urizen Books in the early 1790s, capturing the intellectual and spiritual turmoil of the American and French revolutions. Here, for the first time, the general reader will encounter Blake's most intense vision in reproductions that do justice to the originals, accompanied by texts, comprehensive notes and commentaries, and detailed interpretations of the designs. The Continental Prophecies, which comprises "America," "Europe," and "The Song of Los," presents Blake's critical reckoning with the history of his own times. Marked by a particularly close integration of word and image, the books form a mythical plot from historical events and criticize the intricate structure of social oppression that the author attributes to organized state religion. Each of the three books attempts to point a way toward the process of millennial liberation. These volumes complete the six-part series of William Blake's Illuminated Books, including Jerusalem, Songs of Innocence and of Experience (now available in paperback), The Early Illuminated Books, and Milton, A Poem, all published by Princeton University Press. Very Good in Very Good dj
Description
New York/Chicago: A.L. Burt Company. Very Good in Very Good dj. (c.1931). 3rd printing (stated). Hardcover. [lightly shelfworn, slight deterioration to binding at spine ends, front endpaper rather carelessly razored out; the jacket is edgeworn, with minor paper loss at the spine ends]. "This delightfully clever tale recounts the sudden disappearances of Miss Muffet, a golden-haired child whom everybody wants; some because they love her, some because they hate her, and some because they don't want others to have her. Altogether, Miss Muffet becomes a bone of bitter contention and proceeds to get kidnapped every time a would-be guardian is out of sight." A would-be "madcap" novel that's seriously compromised by the author's clunky prose style, a bevy of uninteresting characters with murky motivations, and a central figure (the aforementioned Miss Muffet) whose sole distinguishing characteristic is a vocabulary of baby-talk that might want to make you claw your eyes out. ("I want to tiss oo 'tause oo're so dood to me.") The dust jacket copy references the author's "growing reputation for charming, lively and amusing stories," and she did indeed crank about half a dozen novels between 1929 and 1935, after which she appears to have retired from the literary scene. Anyway, the usual disclaimer: your mileage may differ (mine certainly did). (Nice jacket, though, by the great Arthur Hawkins Jr.) .

Description
New York/London: The Century Co.. Very Good+ in Good dj. (c.1930). 2nd printing. Hardcover. [solid copy with minor wear to the extremities, light dust-soiling to top edge of text block; the jacket has a shallow triangular chip at the bottom of the front panel, a half-dollar-size chunk torn away from the base of the spine, and a couple of tiny chips along the top edge]. "The story of an English priest who goes to war in 1918 buoyed up by reilgious idealism and imbued with the desire of carry the word of God to the soldiers at the front. But Chaplain Warne, caught in the final desperate German offensive of the war and flung back in the great British retreat that follows, painfully discovers the fact of his own utter uselessness and the futility of the divine mission he had imagined for himself. With terrible restraint we are shown the gradual collapse of this earnest, eager, over-sensitive priest, sinking from fear and depression, down through every degree of morbid self-torture, to madness and death." Great War narratives were all the vogue in the late 1920s -- both the play "Journey's End" and the novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" are evoked (twice!) in the jacket -- .

Description
Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1982. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8x6x1. Book club edition, gutter code M51. Minor wear to corners, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1982 Hard Cover. xiv, 557 pp. Includes 31 stories. "The Complete Robot is the definitive anthology of Asimov's stunning visions of a robotic future... In these stories, Isaac Asimov creates the Three Laws of Robotics and ushers in the Robot Age: when Earth is ruled by master-machines and when robots are more human than mankind. As well as TN-3 (Tony), AL-76 and other robots, the stories feature the staff of U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men Inc., and in particular the chief robot-psychologist, the steely Dr Susan Calvin who is in many ways more robot-like than her subjects. The Complete Robot is the ultimate collection of timeless, amazing and amusing robot stories from the greatest science fiction writer of all time, offering golden insights into robot thought processes. Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics were programmed into real computers thirty years ago at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - with surprising results. Readers of today still have many surprises in store... The Three Laws of Robotics: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm; 2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law; 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law." New York: St. Martin's Press, 2025. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Fine. 6x0x9. Signed by author. First edition. Signed by author on half-title page without inscription. Brand new from publisher. An exceptional copy. 2025 Hard Cover. 276 pp. A new standalone sci-fi novel from Edward Ashton, author of Mickey7 (the inspiration for the major motion picture Mickey 17). Dalton Greaves is a hero. He's one of humankind's first representatives to Unity, a pan-species confederation working to bring all sentient life into a single benevolent brotherhood. That's what they told him, anyway. The only actual members of Unity that he's ever met are Boreau, a giant snail who seems more interested in plunder than spreading love and harmony, and Boreau's human sidekick, Neera, who Dalton strongly suspects roped him into this gig so that she wouldn't become the next one of Boreau's crew to get eaten by locals while prospecting. Funny thing, though―turns out there actually is a benevolent confederation out there, working for the good of all life. They call themselves the Assembly, and they really don't like Unity. More to the point, they really, really don't like Unity's new human minions. When an encounter between Boreau's scout ship and an Assembly cruiser over a newly discovered world ends badly for both parties, Dalton finds himself marooned, caught between a stickman, one of the Assembly's nightmarish shock troops, the planet's natives, who aren't winning any congeniality prizes themselves, and Neera, who might actually be the most dangerous of the three. To survive, he'll need to navigate palace intrigue, alien morality, and a proposal that he literally cannot refuse, all while making sure Neera doesn't come to the conclusion that he's worth more to her dead than alive. Part first contact story, part dark comedy, and part bizarre love triangle, The Fourth Consort asks an important question: how far would you go to survive? And more importantly, how many drinks would you need to go there?

Ashtabula, OH: The Standard Publishing Co, 1908. 21pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Tan printed wrappers. Very good. Rare printing of White's discourse on setting young men on a course towards God and good citizenship. We locate no copies in OCLC or in any reference known to us. "Mr. White is qualified by his own early experiences, to have perpetual interest in boys, especially those likely to fall under adverse influences. His constant observations give an increasing number of personal incidents, continued thought deepens his conviction that there is need of a general awakening of interest in boys, in the enforcement of laws against those who would lead them into dissipation, provide for more loving attention in the house, and more adequate training for citizenship." - from the Introduction by Lyman R. Mears.
