Contents Good, binding about Fine. Folio (11-1/4" x 16-1/4") in modern leather-backed marbled boards with leather corners. Includes 26 issues (5 September 1857 - 27 February 1858) of this important sports newspaper containing accounts of horse races, billiards, cricket matches, chess, and some of the earliest reportage of baseball games including printed box scores (developed by Henry Chadwick in 1856) and rule changes; 415 pages plus single-page index at the end. Illustrated throughout including a fine engraving titled "Base Ball in America" on the front cover of the second issue (12 September 1857), THE FIRST PUBLISHED IMAGE OF A BASE BALL GAME IN PROGRESS. Beginning with the October 24 issue, “X” contributed fourteen “Base Ball Sketches,” which provide invaluable detailed histories of existent clubs. Much more. The first extensive treatment of baseball in an American magazine and a cornerstone for any serious 19th century baseball collection.

Description
1 p.l., 7, [9], 6 pp. Small 4to, attractive antique calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed by T.F., sold by W. Ley, 1657. First edition and rather scarce. Following Shaw’s essay on the dung roller, which he invented, the remainder of the book consists of two texts, the first starting “How to Order any Land, so as it may reteyne all the moysture that falleth thereon: and to Improve it thereby,” and the second starting “An Easie and Profitable Order in Tilling of Ground to improve it and make it Fertile.” “The main points of interest about this work are its mention of the use of a manuring ‘Rowler’ or ‘Barrow,’ which seems to anticipate the modern manuring drill, and the advice it contains to plough in wide lands so that the following season the spaces between may be ploughed into lands, thus resting some part of the field each year and getting continuous heavy crops, which sounds rather similar to, although not precisely the same, as Tull’s Horse-Houghing Husbandry. It is a pity the book contains no description or drawing of the manuring rowler or barrow. The system of cultivation of barren lands Shaw recommends is curious.”–Fussell, The Old English Farming Books from Fitzherbert to Tull 1523 to 1730, p. 53. Fine copy, the variant with the swash “E” on the title and “turally inclined thereunto” on the final line of 2A4v. Short tear in A2 repaired, and catchword of A3 a little shaved. ❧ McDonald, Agricultural Writers, from Sir Walter of Henley to Arthur Young, 1200-1800, p. 109–“written to exploit a certain invention called a dung roller, and he also treats on digging, trenching, dunging, draining, and watering according to the custom of the day.”.

Description
viii, 167 pp. 8vo, orig. pink paper wrappers, uncut. Paris: Regnault-Delalande, 1803. A rare sale catalogue, fully priced in a contemporary hand. This sale took place following the death of the widow of Jean Guillaume Alibert (?1763-180?), who died shortly after her husband. He was a well-known dealer and publisher of prints on Rue Fromenteau in Paris. The business’s stock was liquidated and the present catalogue features famous works by Audran, Callot, Edelinck, Pesne, etc. The star of the sale, to which Regnault-Delalande devotes no less than 52 pages of the catalogue (pp. 97-148), was a “Recueil de Portraits de Souverains, de Souveraines, et de personnes illustres dans l’Eglise, l’Epée, la Robe, les Sciences et les Arts, Femmes célèbres, &c.…” after well-known paintings by van Dyck. Alibert had purchased the collection from the Mariette sale and supplemented it with many of his own acquisitions. It sold for 2,803 francs, according to the annotator. In total, the catalogue records 607 lots of prints and drawings, with the sale schedule at the end. Nice copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. ❧ Cicognara 4566. Lugt 6612.

Description
Philadelphia: Gebbie & Co., Publishers, 1909 Book. Fine. Hardcover. Edited by George Gebbie and Mr. Hunter. 6 volumes extended to 12. 8?x6 inches. Illustrated with 60 etchings along with woodcuts, maps and facsimiles (some folding). Notes. Beautifully hand-colored frontispiece in each volume. Publisher's full light green polished calf in the Art Nouveau style, 5 raised bands, gilt-lettering between panels; gilt rules to bands extending onto covers and culminating at an inlaid floral device, corners of covers with elaborate decorative gilt floral design also with inlay work. There is extensive gilt dentelle and rules on inner cover edges, beautiful emerald green Moiré silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Spines evenly faded to brown, minor fading to rear of first volume and front of last volume. Minor wear to most corners, small scratch to spine of volume II. Overall, a fine and handsome set. "Hand-Made Edition." One of twenty-six lettered copies, this being letter "M." One of the better editions of the poetry and prose of Burns, with interpretations in clear English of key phrases of Burns' admittedly very difficult to read Scottish dialect. The final volume contains the Life of Robert Burns; a Chronological Table of Burns' Life and Works; Posthumous History of Burns by Robert Chambers; Memoranda Concerning the Family of Burns and Their Descendants; List of pieces the editors have left out of these volumes, with their reasons for exclusion; a Chronological and Topographical Table; Glossary of Scots Words with Examples from Burns' Works; Foreign Words used by Burns; and Index of First Lines; Index to the Author's Letters; and, finally, a General Index. .

Paris: Momigny [PN b 13], 1815. Folio. Disbound. Violino Primo: 1f. (title), [1] (blank), 2-17, [i] (blank) pp.; Violino Secondo: [1] (title), 2-13, [i] (blank) pp.; Basso: [1] (title), 2-13, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Publisher's handstamp to lower right corner of Violino Primo part. Printed metronome markings to each movement of Violino Primo part only. With different titles to Violino Secondo and Basso parts ("Six Trios Pour Deux Violons et Basse ou pour Violon seul et Piano Dédiés à sa Mère... Divisés en deux Livres. Œuvre 1er Livre [2] Prix 9f.") and different publisher's addresses ("Boulevard Montmartre No. 31, presqu'au coin du Faubourg Montmartre" to Violino Primo; "Boulevart [!Boulevard] Poissonière", No. 20" to Violino Secondo and Basso). Edges slightly browned; impression occasionally light; final page of Basso part printed upside down. First Edition, mixed issues, with the Violino Primo part being one issue and the Violino Secondo and Basso parts another. Dating the Violino Primo issue is difficult because of contradictory criteria. The Violino Primo part has the title page of the first issue (1800), containing the publisher's earlier address (valid through 1805; see Devriès-Lesure I, p. 120) and making no reference to the arrangement with piano accompaniment; the correction to the final line of the title, where the original reading "Enreg[istr]é à la Bibliothèqu]e Nationale" has been changed to "... Royale," however, points to a date after 1815 as do the added metronome markings. The plate number "13" is also a later addition; although "Livre 1," containing the first three trios of the collection, had the plate number "12" from the beginning, the first issue of "Livre 2" had only "b" (see digitized copies of the first issue at the University of Western Ontario and Eastman School of Music, both at IMSLP). The other two parts carry the publisher's address of 1807-24 and lack the metronome markings; it is likely that they were published before the Violino Primo part.
