Description
London: Printed for and Published by R. Ackermann, 1816. Highest Praise" For Ackermann's Colleges "Equals, If Not Surpasses, That of Oxford and Cambridge" [ACKERMANN, Rudolph, publisher]. The History of the Colleges of Winchester, Eton, and Westminster; with the Charter-House, the Schools of St. Paul's, Merchant Taylors, Harrow, and Rugby, and the Free-School of Christ's Hospital. London: Printed for and Published by R. Ackermann, 1816. First edition, early issue. Large quarto (13 3/8 x 11 1/8 inches; 340 x 282 mm.). vi, [1, "Arrangement of Plates"], [1, blank], 56; 72; 27, [1, blank]; 32; 34; 22; 40; 34; 43, [1, blank] pp. With forty-eight hand-colored plates (forty-five aquatint and three engraved), including four costume plates and forty-four views by Havell, Stadler, Bluck, and others, after Westall, Mackenzie, Pugin, and others. All plates with tissue guards. Text watermarked 1816, plates watermarked 1812 and 1816. Abbey's second state of Plate 6 ("Winchester College, from the Meadow"), dated "Jany. 1, 1816"; Abbey's second state of Plate 23 ("Westminster School Room"), with hats added to the masters; Abbey's second state of Plate 26 ("Charter House, from the Play Ground"), depicting thirteen boys and masters playing cricket (instead of washerwomen). Handsomely bound ca. 1940 by Birdsall of Northampton & London (stamp-signed in gilt on lower front turn-in). Full red morocco, covers decoratively paneled and tooled in gilt. Spine with five raised bands decoratively ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, decorative gilt board edges and turn-ins, cockerel endpapers, top edge gilt. Housed in a later leather-edged slipcase. A wonderful example - the plates with early watermarks, all clean and fresh with superb hand coloring. With the pencil marks of the late, great bookseller Charles W. Traylen of Guildford on the verso of the front free endpaper date "30. 11. 63" "[Ackermann's History of the University of Oxford (1813) and History of the University of Cambridge (1814)] were fittingly followed by a History of the Colleges...Of this also a thousand copies were issued in monthly parts, the first appearing on January 1, 1816...The text, with the exception of the parts dealing with Winchester, Eton, and Harrow (the work of W.H. Pyne), were entirely written by Combe, and the same artists were employed in its decoration, the highest praise for which is that it equals, if not surpasses, that of Oxford and Cambridge. The original drawings for the forty-eight coloured plates were distributed among Westall, who executed fifteen, and Pugin and Mackenzie, who did fourteen each, while one is by J. Gendall, who besides illustrating Ackermann's publications was employed for some years in managing his business, particularly in developing the new art of lithography. The actual engraving was done by Havell and Stadler, with a few plates by Bluck and Bennett, and four line engravings of costume by Agar after Uwins. Here again it may be noticed that many of the aquatints are printed in two colours before being finished by hand" (Martin Hardie). The roots of Birdsall of Northampton "stretch back to the early eighteenth century but it was in 1792 that John Lacy's Northampton bindery was acquired by William Birdsall, continuing in his family until 1961...In Birdsall's heyday, Gerring (Notes on Bookbinding, 1899) reported a staff of 250 engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes, and stationary; as well as all types of bookbinding. The firm seemed always ready to experiment and careful records and samples were kept by Richard Birdsall, great-great-nephew of the founder, until he died in 1909...The firm's collection of over 3,000 finishing tools passed to the University of Toronto" (Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles II, #262, and #321). "Birdsall's is notable for the high quality of their leathers and finishings, as well as for the inventive style of their 'inlaid pictorial bindings'" (Chevalier Collection, Christie's November 9, 1990). Abbey, Scenery, 440; Adams, London Illustrated, 116; Martin Hardie, pp. 106-107; Prideaux, pp. 126 and 332; Tooley 3.

Description
Good Condition. 66 letters, largely orders -- often quite detailed -- for various publications. The letters come from all over Mexico and a couple from the US -- AZ and TX -- with a number of repeat orders. Almost all including the original stamps and envelopes and marked "Paid" with a date. Letters date from 1897-1922 (with one later order from 1943) with the largest number, 49 letters, from late 1921 and early 1922 when Antonio Vanegas Arroyo's son Blas was running the business. They give a fascinating view of the business of what is probably the most important Mexican publisher of the late 19th and early 20th century. Some degradation, biopredation, modest moisture damage, but all generally legible and not lacking much sense. Manuscript copy of "El Cura de Jalatlaco" a zarazuela in two acts with words by Vicente A. Galicia and music by Jose Austri with a manuscript and a printed title page dated 1892 (which was the date of the original performance - it was published by Vanegas Arroyo in 1895; 1 copy in OCLC at UC Berkeley). 87pages with another handwritten Obras de Vicente Gallicia page at the end. SIgned by Gallicia on page 87. Bound in pebbled brown cloth, wear at corners, splitting at spine, some edgewear to final pages in the margins. Eight manuscript canciones signed by Pedro Martinez or P.M. on two bifolium. Date 9/21/13. Likely published by Arroyo, but no trace of them has been found. Often the canciones, corridos, and danzas weren't signed by the author when printed, so it is hard to know if these appeared or not. A few with some moisture damage and running of the ink, but not really affecting sense. Seven page manuscript on two bifolium with a string binding of a Triduo a San Nicolas de Barri. Written in a fine script and signed by Antonio Vanega Arroyo and dated May 8, 1914 (stamped Mar 8, 1914 with a Casa Editoral de Antonio Vargas Arroyo stamp). Includes orations and other devotions for St. Nicolas' holy week. Last page with some biopredation affecting a few words. An interesting and varied archive of documents relating to Antonio Vanegas Arroyo (1852-1917) and his publishing house. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Americana; Inventory No: 048632.

Near fine; small tear at the margin of the folding map.
Description
London: J Murray, 1843. First English Language Edition. Contemporary paneled calf; gilt compartments. Prize binding.. Near fine; small tear at the margin of the folding map.. 8vo, xxxiv, [2], [1] - 260 pp. + large folding map. The book offered here is volume seven of the von Clausewitz's collected papers; his early death allowed for the fact that all of his written work, except a brief essay, were issued posthumously. The Russian Campaign was partially written in 1814 and completed in 1824. It is an account in which the author participated in the events. von Clausewitz, at the outset an assistant to the Prussian Scharnhorst, refused to be impressed into the service of the French and joined the Russian Army becoming chief of staff for the Russo-German legion. He was readmitted to the Prussian Army after the first Peace of Paris. The translation, " ... is sometimes dismissed as a mere recounting of its author's experiences ... In fact, however, it is a useful demonstration of Clausewitz's critical approach to the writing of military history and contains an assessment of Napoleon's 1812 strategy more extensive in some respects than that given in On War. ... A great many other aspects of Clausewitz's analysis of the dynamics of war also appear, particularly his concept of the 'culminating point' of the offensive (Bassford p. 45)." An important book. Bassford, Clausewitz in English ....; Earle, Makers of Modern Strategy, chapter 5; see PMM #297.

Description
29/01/1968. “I take your letter and statement supporting my State of the Union address as evidence of the strength America brings to challenge. Your leadership has seldom been more vital to all our hopes.”By the dawn of 1968, vocal opposition to the Vietnam War in the United States was increasing significantly, and would very soon reach a fever pitch. This would be fueled by the Tet Offensive on January 30, media coverage, and growing casualties. Public approval of President Lyndon Johnson's handling of the war plummeted, with a majority disapproving by February. Protests, led by students, veterans, and various activist groups, intensified, targeting the White House and other symbolic locations. With so much opposition, and the war no longer popular, Johnson needed all the support could get.In his 1968 State of the Union address, on January 17, just thirteen days before the Tet Offensive, Johnson focused on both domestic and foreign policy, with a strong emphasis on the Vietnam War and its impact on the nation. The speech acknowledged the ongoing conflict and the need for a peaceful resolution. Johnson mentioned exploring Hanoi's recent statements about talks, but stressed the importance of not allowing such hopes to jeopardize the lives of American soldiers. He also discussed the success of programs like Medicare and Medicaid, and advocated for initiatives to rebuild cities and increase housing construction. He stressed the goals he hoped America could achieve by the time of the bicentennial, emphasizing unity and shared national purpose.About Vietnam, Johnson stated: “A President, a Vice President, a House and Senate, and village officials have been chosen by popular, contested ballot. The enemy has been defeated in battle after battle. The number of South Vietnamese living in areas under Government protection tonight has grown by more than a million since January of last year. These are all marks of progress. Yet: The enemy continues to pour men and material across frontiers and into battle, despite his continuous heavy losses. He continues to hope that America's will to persevere can be broken. Well--he is wrong. America will persevere. Our patience and our perseverance will match our power. Aggression will never prevail.” Some of the statements he made were controversial.Annette Cusson was a Democratic National Committeewoman from Rhode Island, who wrote Johnson a letter of support for his State of the Union address and its policies. Typed letter signed, The White House, Washington, January 29, 1968, to Cusson, thanking her for her support. “I take your letter and statement supporting my State of the Union address as evidence of the strength America brings to challenge. Your leadership has seldom been more vital to all our hopes. It has never been more valued by me. I am grateful for the confidence your partnership conveys.” The Tet Offensive was just hours away. This is a significant letter articulating Johnson’s belief in the strength of the United States and his hopes for the future.

JAMES EMILIUS BROOME (1808-1883). Broome served as the third Governor of Florida between 1853 to 1857. DS. 2 pg. 8 x 10. November 19. 1845. N.p. A document signed J.E. Broome. The front of the document is the Sales of Cottonfor asc and risk of Estate of John W. Gotten deceased by Henry Waring & Son. Before serving as Floridas Governor James E. Broome was Probate Judge of Leon County between 1841-1848, and as such he was required to certify wills and estate sales such as that of John Gotten. After calculating the sale of cotton as $2611.45 and deducting related expenses, Broome certifies a profit (net proceeds) of $2219.05. The reverse lists other sources of income and deductions (generally outstanding debts to other individuals) from the Estate of John W. Gotten deceased, and the final value (balance) of the estate is listed at $1608.89. This would equal over $60,000 in value today. This document is an excellent example of a typical Southern planters estate and sources of income and costs in the 19th century. The document is in fine condition with some creases along the edges.

Description
quarto, 2 pages, written in ink, on thin, blue paper stock, formerly folded, some loss of paper at intersections of fold joints, with minimal effect upon several letters of text, else in good, clean and legible condition. Discusses steam boat building and repair, and hopes that Douglass, who lives in the north, can find suitable employment for Elliott, possibly Banks' son: "Dear Douglass, ... I have been busy as a Bee for two or 3 months & did not have time to write a long letter so concluded to lay it aside & write at leisure, will do so probably next Sunday. New boat done she is a fine boat & pretty fast had she been finished according to your plan she would have been of a sht draft as she now only draws 2 feet. The Bro has been fixed up her boiler patched & moved forward she now draws 14 ½ inches, 5 less than any boat on the River ... I am more anxious to try & get Charlie north with you out of this infernal place he stayed with Elliott until times got so hard then he came home & has been here ever since, he has formed associations that would ruin any boy if he did not get away from them, if though have any love for me try & do something for him he prefers a machinists trade but I think he would wish to be a man fit for anything & would like to follow you in your business if you were Capt of St Bt. Building a Boat or anything else it would suit him. I should be willing to give almost everything I had in the world to see him able & willing to build a boat or Engine or have the knowledge you possess of management in any sort of a business, but should you be able to find anything for him to do you can consult him when he goes north. Should you deem it prudent to get him into a shop away from your place let him make your house his home & go there every week, it may be in my power to do as much for you or yours some day, if it comes in the way. We are doing a fine business on the river, I am doing first rate..."

Description
Salt Lake City, 1983. [14]pp. Octavo [22 cm] Side stapled illustrated wrappers. Near fine. Program for the Earth First! Festival the happaned at the Utah State Fairgrounds in Salt Lake City on August 14, 1983. Gary Snyder was the featured speaker. Includes a description of Earth First!; a short piece by Edward Abbey 'Here in Spirit'; poetry from Gary Snyder and Bart Koehler; illustrations from Jim Stiles; and the Deborah Lanner 'Canyonlands or No-man's Land? A proposed Nuclear Waste Dump Threatens the Park.' "It was a helluva show," said one unidentified Utahan heading home in the rain after the August 14 Earth First! Festival in Salt Lake City. And indeed it was. Diverse. But one helluva show. The crowd of 300 at the Utah State Fairgrounds was less than had been hoped for, but the turn-out did not dull the audience or the performers. Musicians for the 8-hour long show were folksinger "Wobblie" Bob Phillips from Moab, rock'n'rollers Maggie Beers and Friends, Tophat, Liz Draper and the LZ5, country singer Hardin Davis, and, of course, Johnny Sagebrush and the Wild Goose Band. Poets included Art Goodtimes of Telluride, Jose, Simon Ortiz from New Mexico, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Gary Snyder. The speakers were rancher Cecil Garland, Ken 'Seldom-Seen Smith' Sleight, and master of ceremonies Dave Foreman. Although swelling afternoon thunderheads over the Wasatch Mountains may have kept some people away, they provided the high points of the festival. As Simon Ortiz was giving an Acoma Pueblo prayer to thunder, the huge black cloud rearing behind him happily obliged. When darkness fell, so did the rain. The audience scurried into a shed for protection just before Gary Snyder was scheduled." 'Earth First! Radical Environmental Journal' (1983/09/23). Presumed rare.
