Description
1860. SADAHIDE,Gyokuransai and KANAGAKI, Robun. Yokohama Miyage. Two volumes 18x12cm, original decorated wrappers, (worn but solid) with original printed label on the first volume and an old manuscript replacement on the second; Each with 25 folded leaves all with colour woodcuts.. 8vo. wrappers. [Tokyo] : Gifuya Seishichi,1860. This is an early survey of Yokohama, published shortly after it was opened as a foreign port in 1859. Gifuya Seishichi initially issued it in five parts in 1860. This version is a compilation of the five parts without title pages and colophon. This would appear to be as issued, divided exactly in half in the middle of part three. NIJL (National Institute of Japanese Literature) illustrates the Yokohama City Library copy of the first volume identical to ours. Waseda has a copy in the same wrappers with parts four and five together. They also have parts one to three in the original form. This an extremely appealing work, one of whose features is that many of the plates can be joined together to form panoramas. The wrappers are a little grubby, nevertheless this is a rare, important and visually attractive book on Yokohama. OCLC lists a copy at Stanford

[Wrapping flowers]. 27 leaves, illustrated with woodcut frontispiece, 20 colour woodcuts, and 16 black-and-white woodcuts. 8vo, 255 x 185 mm., bound in publisher's wrappers in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Nihon Kado Enshukai Soka Kyodobu: Kado Enshuryu Seifu Iemoto Kansai Jimusho, 1911. A beautiful and unusual book on wrapping flowers (hana tsutsumi in Japanese). In his book Hana Tsutsumi, Mitsuko Kawata points to the Sendensho, a book on Ikebana published in 1445, as having information on how to wrap flowers. "When offering floral materials as a gift: Wrap the lower ends of branches in paper. Also wrap the lower ends of flower stems in paper. Tie the branches in several places and offer the bouquet with the flowers facing downward. You may at times fold the wrapping paper in the shape of a butterfly or flower, and you should offer the bouquet adorned with red mizuhiki (stiff paper string)".

Description
1883. First Edition. WIGGIN, Kate Douglas, under her maiden name SMITH, Kate Douglas. The Story of Patsy. San Francisco: C.A. Murdock, 1883. Slim 12mo, original printed paper wrappers; pp. 27. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and slipcase. $4500.Rare first edition of the author's first book, a fundraising tool for the kindergarten she founded, Silver Street Kindergarten, California's first free kindergarten. As the author of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Kate Douglas Wiggin is often considered one of the finest American children's authors. Wiggin has been lauded frequently for her deep understanding of children and their inner lives, insight she likely gained from her time as a teacher. In fact, Wiggin established America's first free Kindergarten, the New Silver Street Kindergarten. Her efforts were so successful, that she co-founded a Kindergarten teaching school with her sister. This book, The Story of Patsy, was sold as a fundraiser for Wiggin's Kindergarten. Explaining her motivations, Wiggin wrote about the need to replenish the school's coffers and stated her desire to ""take in more of the babies waiting so wistfully in the back street."" She later wrote, ""I was far too close to the life I was picturing to make this book wholly worthy of its subject. I am well aware that it lacks perspective, and that it has more heart than art, but… how many girls read and flew to the nearest training school!… It was not published, only privately printed, bound in a paper cover, and sold here and there for 25 cents for the benefit of the cause."" Wiggin eventually left the Kindergarten—as was expected at the time—following her marriage to a New York businessman. Thereafter, she established a reputation as a prominent children's writer and education advocate, redirecting her knowledge and experience. Nevertheless, preliminary hints of Wiggin's writerly talents were clearly on display in this work, Wiggin's first book. First edition, without edition statement by publishers on page 2. The first commercial publication of this book was by Houghton Mifflin in 1889. Pencil owner gift inscription. Morocco bookplate in chemise.Interior generally fine, only light rubbing and soiling to fragile wrappers. A nearly fine copy of this great rarity.

He collect a large and valuable library. He first published his Lives of the Admirals in four volumes in the years 1742 to 1744. There were several later editions. From 1744 to 1748 he compiled and published what became known as Campbell's enlarged edition of John Harris's Complete collection of voyages and travels, originally published in 1702-1705. Description
London: Henry Washbourne, 1845. Later edition. Half-morocco and marbled boards, spine in compartments with title and decorations in gilt. From the libraries of Ralph Starkweather, Thomas Westwood and Larry C. Parks. M.D. with their respective bookplates. Browne’s best known work is Religio medici, or The doctor’s religion, which is his own spiritual testament and an early example of a psychological self-portrait. The work represents Browne’s attempt to arrive at a vital concept of faith, one with tolerance, humor and dignity. First published in 1642, shortly after the author had qualified himself to practice medicine, Religio medici became a best-seller throughout the European continent and because of its unorthodox views. While largely an exposition of Christian faith the work meanders into digressions upon alchemy, hermetic philosophy, astrology, and physiognomy. Also included in this edition is Hydriotaphia, Urn Burial, or a Discourse of the Sepulchral Urns lately found in Norfolk and Christian morals. The first work revolves around the discovery of a Roman urn burial in Norfolk which Browne uses to discuss ancient and current burial and funerary customs and extends to a greater inquiry of man's struggles with mortality. The second, Christian morals, contains Browne’s advice for his children. It was first published posthumously in 1716 and consists of meditations upon Christian values and conduct. Browne (1605-82) received his M.D. at Oxford in 1637. He was a prolific author who wrote on a wide variety of subjects including medicine, religion, science and the esoteric. The first two works were edited by J.A. St. John; Christian morals was edited by John Jeffery and includes bibliographical references.

Description
London: Macmillan and Co, 1910. FIRST EDITION. Compete with half-title and frontispiece in both volumes and 14 additional plates. Red cloth, gilt spine, top edges gilt, corners slightly bumped; text is generally clean and bright throughout. An excellent copy. First edition of the most extensive and complete biography of Lord Kelvin (1824-1907), widely considered to be the founder of British physics. He was a foremost figure in the world of nineteenth-century science, particularly as a scientist involved with the practical application of theoretical physics as well as his numerous contributions to the field of physical instrumentation. Thompson details every aspect of Lord Kelvin’s life, from his childhood and early education, to his scientific breakthroughs and interactions with his contemporaries, his personal relationships, death, and the lasting effects of his research. Lord Kelvin’s achievements in physics, engineering, and thermodynamics are deep, far reaching, and still extremely applicable today. His research and experimentation produced the absolute temperature scale and the qualification of absolute zero, the point at which no further heat can be transferred. Additionally, Lord Kelvin’s work on the electric telegraph pioneered invaluable technology for wireless communication. Also, given his penchant for sailing and maritime activities, he developed a more accurate compass and invented a machine to predict the rise and fall of the tides. Thompson (1851-1916) was a respected professor of applied physics, electrical engineering, and the history of science and technology.
