Description
1805. Scroll (185 x 9300 mm.), front endpaper covered in silk brocade, wooden core roller. At end (in trans.): “Information came from the founder Zeshinken Ichiro 是心軒一露…Secret Information, Keep in the Family…September 1805…given to Godaibō Bokuyū Goryūken 五大坊卜友 五柳軒 [a successor to Zeshinken].” Zeshinken (1734–80), scholar monk, was a master of ikebana 生け花 (flower arrangement) and created a school devoted to this art (which still exists and thrives). He devised a seika 生花 form based on a belief in five elements called Godai 五大 (地大 earth, 水大 water, 火大 fire, 風大 wind, and 空大 air) in esoteric Buddhism. Our scroll begins with a detailed account of many styles of the Shogetsudō Koryū, including flowers in various states of bloom, the 13 rules of flower arrangement, assorted vases and containers, flowers not to be used, a seasonal selection of materials, unsuitable forms, the philosophy of displaying, coordination with hanging scrolls, styles for religious purposes, etc. The drawings provide guidance for the arrangements. An early reader has provided reading marks throughout. Fine condition, preserved in a wooden box. Some minor worming.

Leipzig: C.F. Peters [PNs 1688; 1688 II], 1824. Oblong folio. Full contemporary dark green pebbled cloth with initials "A. v B." in gilt to upper, titling gilt to spine. 1f. (title), [i] (table of contents), 2-99, [i] (blank), 3-110 pp. Each act separately paginated. Engraved. Text in German and Italian. Two publisher's handstamps to lower portion of title. Binding slightly worn. Minor dampstaining, most noticeable to first six leaves; some foxing. First Edition of the first version. OCLC no. 163227488. Hirsch IV no. 1283. Göthel p. 336. Faust, to a libretto by Joseph Carl Bernard, was first performed in Prague at the Estates Theatre on 1 September 1816. "... Faust marks an important landmark in the development of German Romantic opera. Spohr's concern to create scene complexes, rather than merely a string of individual numbers, points the way towards the continuity of his later operas. His striking use of chromatic harmony was recognized by Weber, who wrote in his introduction to the Prague première: 'this dark, Romantic spirit-world is ideally matched with the composer's inmost musical character. Owing to this fact the work as a whole is marked by great aptness of colour - grand musical and dramatic effects of charm and tenderness alternating with shatteringly powerful effects in the ensembles and choruses' ... Regarded by many contemporaries as worthy of a place beside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the pantheon of the greatest composers, [Spohr] has, together with Gluck and Cherubini, been allotted a considerably lower status by posterity. Mozart's Figaro and Wagner's Tristan were both composed during Spohr's lifetime; his own work looks, Janus-like, towards both the formalism and clarity of the Classical tradition, and the structural and harmonic experimentation associated with 19th-century Romanticism." Clive Brown in Grove Music Online.

Leipzig: Bureau de Musique de C.F. Peters [PNs 1831, 1831 II], 1825. Folio. Unbound. Ir Quatuor: Violino primo: 1f. (title), [1] (blank), 2-10, [ii] (blank) pp.; Violino secondo: [1] (blank), 2-8 pp.; Viola: [1] (blank), 2-7 pp.; Violoncello: 8 pp. IIe Quatuor: Violino primo: 8 pp.; Violino secondo: 7 pp.; [1] (blank); Viola: 7, [i] (blank) pp.; Violoncello: [1] (blank), 2-7 pp. Engraved. Two small publisher's handstamps to lower corners of title. Signature, "A. Scheibler," in ink to lower right corner of title. Slightly soiled and foxed. First Edition of the first of Spohr's four "double quartets," in D minor. Göthel p. 114. Schneider catalogue 244. WorldCat (4 copies in the U.S., at Harvard University (2), the New England Conservatory of Music, and the Interlochen Center for the Arts (some later issue). "The largest portion of Spohr's chamber music was for strings alone, ranging from 19 unsurpassed duos for two violins to four masterly, and largely unemulated, double string quartets. These, together with the 36 string quartets (and several other works for the same combination), seven string quintets and the String Sextet of 1848, display a number of common features. Spohr's own mastery of the violin is evident in all of them, and their technical difficulties, together with the particular style of performance necessary to secure their full effect, may partly explain their infrequent performance. The quartets, especially, fall into two distinct categories: solo quartets in the tradition of Rode (often entitled Quatuor brillant), which are essentially violin concertos with string trio accompaniment, and true quartets where the interest is more evenly divided between the instruments." Clive Brown in Grove Music Online.
