Description
1832. KENT, James. Commentaries on American Law. New York: O. Halsted, 1832. Four volumes. Octavo, contemporary full tan sheep rebacked, raised bands, brown morocco spine labels. $2500.Second edition of one of the most important legal treatises in American history.""Superior to any previous treatise on this subject, and a landmark in the history of international law"" (Chamberlain). ""The foremost American institutional legal treatise"" (DAB). ""Without Kent and Story, it is doubtful that the common law could have been received as readily as it was or that judicial decision could have taken over as the law's growing point… Above all, the text writers and their affiliated law schools were a great unifying influence in American law"" (Schwartz, 111). Kent's Commentaries ""contain not only a clear statement of the English law, with all the alterations that have taken place since the time of Blackstone, but a full account of the main principles of Equity, also, a review of the modifications engrafted on the English law by the different states of the Union… and on all important questions, an instructive parallel between the English, American, Modern Continental and Civil Laws"" (Marvin, 438). Kent's goal was ""to transplant the English common law to America… [His] reliance on precedents had the two-prong effect of helping to maintain the primacy of judge-made law in contrast to codification by legislatures, while providing the legal profession with the degree and kind of certainty it craved"" (ANB). A Columbia University professor and judge in New York, Kent was one of the most influential jurists of his time, and early in his career ""was responsible for two significant innovations: written opinions and published reports"" (ANB). First published in 1826-30. NYU, 249. HLC I: 1088. Bookplates.Interiors quite clean. In handsome contemporary sheep boards.

Binding tight, text unmarked. 285, 32 pp. 8vo. Red cloth, gilt titles, black stamped decorations on spine and front board, publisher emblem on rear board, floral decorated endpapers. A satirical tale that revolves around the theft of a rare and valuable white elephant from the ruler of a fictional Asian kingdom. Description
Ohio, 1965. Cards. Fair. Cards. 8 index cards and 13 photographs taped together to form a binding of 28 pages, unpaginated, forming a typewritten and photo-illustrated account, with one hand-drawn diagram, of 9 vehicles purchased and driven by Milton and Ross Elliott of Ohio from 1908 to 1965. Vehicles include: The 1908 Croxton-Keeton Jewel 2-passenger car, the 1916 Ford Model-T Touring Car, the 1929 Ford Model-A 4-door Sedan, the 1936 Chevrolet Standard, the 1950 Ford V-8 Model BODA, the 1954 Ford V-8 4-door Sedan, the 1965 Ford Falcon. Illustrated in 1-2 photographs of each vehicle, often with owners and family, throughout, with typewritten records including price at purchase, seller and manufacturer information, automotive details and flaws ("gasket blew out often," "[speedometer] was very unreliable as it ran from front wheel..."), alterations ("added radio, hornring"), mileage from purchase to end of ownership, average gas mileage, and more. 5" X 3", taped at top edge in between each index card or photograph. Tape between accounts of the 1929 Ford Model-A 4-door Sedan and the 1936 Chevrolet Standard has lost all adhesive, and this binding is in two parts, hence the "fair" condition. Currently held together with a rubberband. Moderate wear to edges, with yellowing and toning from tape. This is an admittedly worn but fascinating and handmade photo-illustrated artifact of American automobile culture through the first 6 decades of the 20th Century.
