Description
1857. LOGAN, James and MCIAN, Robert Ronald. The Clans of the Scottish Highlands. London: Willis and Sotheran, 1857. Two volumes. Folio (11 by 15 inches), publisher's full red pebbled morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers with Scottish motifs, raised bands, all edges gilt. $11,500.Second edition of the first illustrated encyclopedia of traditional Scottish tartans, with two chromolithographic heraldic frontispieces and 72 vibrant, hand-colored lithographic plates after the celebrated paintings of Robert Ronald McIan. An excellent copy in splendid publisher's deluxe morocco-gilt.Initially an aspiring actor in London, Robert Ronald McIan eventually abandoned the stage to develop his gifts as a painter. Today, he is best remembered for the vibrant and dramatic illustrations of Highlanders in their tartans that fill these volumes. McIan's art, supplemented by text from scholar and journalist James Logan (author of the landmark The Scottish Gael, 1831), helped fuel the Victorian public's fascination with Scottish costumes, particularly following the 1782 law prohibiting the wearing of Highland dress. Very popular at the time, McIan's Clans is still considered the finest example of a large number of works on the subject. First published 1845-47 by Ackermann and Co.; this Willis and Sotheran edition is essentially an identical reissue of that earlier work with an altered letterpress title page, published shortly after McIan's death in 1856. Hiller, 550. Tooley 322. Houfe, 219. See Colas 1892. Armorial bookplate in each volume.Occasional light spotting; hinges and spines expertly refurbished. A handsome copy in excellent condition.

Description
New York: Aperture, 1977. First edition. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF EDWARD WESTON: NUDES WHICH ELEVATED PHOTOGRAPHY TO THE STATUS OF FINE ART. In 1902 Edward Weston (1886-1958) received a Kodak Box camera from his father and in 1903 dropped out of high school and chose a life in photography. As a young photographer he took mainly portraits and became a student of pictorialism, the dominant style of photography at the time, that prioritized the beauty of the subject matter and composition over reality. Weston was technically skilled, though through his early years he felt artistically uninspired. In 1917 he began jotting down his beliefs about life and the aesthetics of photography explaining that "...the camera should be used for a recording of life, for rendering the very substance and quintessence of the thing itself, whether it be polished steel or palpitating flesh" (Newhall The Daybooks of Edward Weston, 54). By the 1920s Weston moved away from traditional portraiture and pictorialism. He began to develop his own modernist style using a close-up lens, light, shadow and composition to emphasize purity and simplicity. Art historian Nancy Newhall observed that he "used light like a chisel", noting how "the shadow itself...is as active and potent as the light" (Edward Weston's Book of Nudes, 23-24). Weston's fascination with nudes are a defining characteristic of his evolution as a photographer. His 1977 book Edward Weston: Nudes, which we have on offer, is an impressive and comprehensive compilation of Weston's work in this genre. This deluxe first edition was limited to 350 copies, published almost two decades after Weston's death and is signed by Charis Wilson, his wife from 1939-1946 and his muse for many years. When Wilson and Weston met at a concert in 1934 he was estranged from his first wife. He wrote, "April 22 [1934], a day to always remember. I knew now what was coming; eyes don't lie and she wore no mask... I was lost and have been ever since." He and Wilson moved in together right away and married five years later. Weston considered his relationship with Wilson to be one of the most important in his personal and professional life. According to Weston, "the first nudes of C. [Charis] were easily among the finest I had done, perhaps the finest." Many of the photographs in Edward Weston: Nudes are of Charis Wilson. After Edward Weston's death in 1958, Wilson began working with Cole, one of Edward's children from his first marriage, to curate this historic compilation of nudes. Cole was Edward's trusted assistant, companion, and archival manager. Wilson was not only Edward's model but also a scribe who recorded their many adventures. Cole and Charis Wilson artfully interspersed excerpts of Edward's writings with the photos; Wilson penned the foreword and afterword of this text. Edward Weston: Nudes is presented together with an original platinum print of "Nude, 1920," one of Edward Weston's most famous photos. "Nude, 1920" is meticulously composed, using light and shadow to exemplify the human body as a sculptural, abstract form devoid of context or narrative. This work also showcases Weston's use of the platinum printing process, known for its rich, yet subtle, tonal range, which captures the depth and texture of the human form with extraordinary clarity and detail. This print is signed by his son, Cole Weston. The release of Edward Weston: Nudes in 1977 deepened his reputation as a photography pioneer and together with Alfred Stieglitz elevated photography to the status of fine art (B. Newhall). Prior to the publication of this collection the nude form was often relegated to more commercial and less artistic realms. His ability to portray the nude with a sense of dignity contributed to the broader acceptance of such works in the mainstream. According to Hilton Kramer, art critic for The New York Times, "To Weston's eye... the landscape of the human body was an unending revelation of forms both voluptuous and abstract. His genius as an artist lay in his ability to respond to both with equal passion" (Woodward). Weston's nudes were also uniquely relevant to discussions about the body, identity, and artistic expression that dominated the cultural conversations of the 1970s. Weston received the first Guggenheim Fellowship ever given to a photographer in 1937 and had a major one-man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 1946. It is this curated collection of Weston's 1920-1945 prints in Edward Weston: Nudes that introduced him to a new generation, and solidified his position as one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century. New York: Aperture, 1977. Deluxe first edition, limited to 350 copies, this being number 263. Illustrated from black and white photographs by Weston. Quarto, publisher's beige buckram stamped in gilt, original slipcase. Signed by Charis Wilson on limitation page. Together with an original platinum print photography negative (7 ¼ x 9 ¼") titled "Nude, 1920" by Edward Weston on original mount and matting, signed by Cole Weston in pencil on matting verso, complete with printed glassine title sheet and folder. Both book and print in fine condition. RARE. References: Ansel E. Adams, "Photography," The Fortnightly 1:8, 18 December 1931, 21-22. Beaumont Newhall. Excellent condition overall, with some toning small chips and various wear to margins, but overall quite well preserved. Near Fine. Isabel and Monroe Smith, a married couple from Northfield, Massachusetts, started the American Youth Hostel movement in 1933 after gaining inspiration from Richard Schirrman’s German Hosteling Organization. The movement grew quickly, with thirty hostels operating throughout New England within the first year. The first hostel was the Northfield Chateau, a large mansion on Birnham Road that was eventually demolished in 1963. The network of chaperoned hostels created the opportunity for safe bicycle-based travel, as shown in the posters offered here. Offered here are three early posters from the movement, designed by Isabel Smith, each with her signature in the image. All posters are variations on the cycling theme. One of them states that “When the grand day’s bicycling is done… no fare can compare with the Royal ‘Hostellers’ Own.” Smith’s design aesthetic is quite accomplished, and we are surprised to find no examples of these in institutional collections. Overall a visually compelling group, uncommon.

Description
Paramount. No binding. Just About Fine. [Los Angeles]: Paramount Pictures, [1929]. Set of 12 vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white photos, one with mimeographed text on verso, three with the film's title stamped on verso, overall just about fine. Josef von Sternberg's first talking film. Some historians credit his importance in the evolution of gangster films with his UNDERWORLD (1927). This was by any standard the first significant talking gangster film. It tells the story of a criminal, facing execution, who wants to kill the man in the next cell for being in love with his former girlfriend. Sternberg experimented with asynchronous sound effects which served to augment or supplement the visual effects, or as he framed the process, "To be correctly and effectively used, the sound had to bring to the image a quality other than what the lens included, a quality out of the range of the image. Sound had to counterpoint or compensate for the image, add to it – not subtract from it." Rather than the external and complementary musical accompaniment of silent films, Sternberg's scores arise organically with the mise-en-scène and form a key component of the film. The music off-screen does not recede in deference to the on-screen dialogue, but competes with it. Off-screen, voices comment on the visual action, but are not identified visually until later in the film sequence, contributing to an "unrealistic cadence" that characterizes the film's dialogue. Film historian Andrew Sarris describes it as "a startling experiment... his use of sound and music for mood effects, and the very unreality of his style seems to justify the unusual density of his sound track." Sternberg also uses sound expressionistically, such as the erratic start-stop of a sewing machine or the "sinister" squeaking of a dog's ball toy, squeezed by the condemned criminal in the hours before his death.
