Description
1583. Title printed in red and black; two full-page woodcut borders, two coats-of-arms, 90 full-page woodcuts (two with five & six movable flaps, respectively), printer’s device at end, all with beautiful cont. coloring and some heightened with gold (“Fürstenkolorit”). [28], 274 pp., [8] leaves. Small folio, cont. calf (joints & ends of spine repaired), ornately gilt, spine with five raised bands, gilt fillets & ornaments in compartments, center of covers with medallion depicting the staff of Asclepius, remains of green silk ties, covers with gilt arabesque & floral border, gilt gauffered edges. Dresden: M. Stöckel, 1583. First edition, a spectacular copy of the first modern work on eye surgery and one of the earliest medical books printed in German vernacular rather than the usual Latin. The illustrations and even the famous movable flaps in our copy have been lavishly colored and some heightened with gold by a contemporary colorist. The recto of leaf A2 bears the woodcut arms of the dedicatee Duke August of Saxony, under whom Bartisch (1535-1607) served as court oculist. Bartisch’s work presents a comprehensive picture of Renaissance medical practices, with numerous extraordinary and boldly cut full-page illustrations, many after Bartisch’s own drawings. It is the first systematic work on ocular disease and eye surgery and the first ophthalmic atlas, featuring 90 striking full-page woodcuts showing examples of operations, surgical instruments, chemical apparatus for preparing medicines, etc. Head and eye anatomy are depicted first, then strabismus, cataracts, external diseases, and examples of trauma. Injuries and defects caused by magic and witchcraft are discussed in a chapter. A few diseases are detailed here for the first time. The skilled tooling on the binding is clearly influenced by the work of Jakob Krause (1526/27-1585), a renowned Dresden bookbinder who was frequently employed by Duke August of Saxony. The present binding was probably executed by one of his talented students. Light browning throughout. Occasional minor worming in margins. ❧ Grolier One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine (1995) 22. Description
Black & white illus. throughout. [30] pp. (incl. inside of wrappers). 4to (274 x 214 mm.), orig. printed wrappers, staple-bound. New York: 1976. Scarce and essential early documentation of Fluxus materials and artists’ books. This is the first catalogue issued by Backworks, a New York-based collaboration between Barbara Moore and Jon Hendricks, specializing in documents and artifacts of avant-garde and experimental art. Located at 488 Greenwich Street, the store was active into the early 1980s. In 1981, Hendricks left the partnership to become curator of the Fluxus collection formed by Gilbert and Lila Silverman (now at the Museum of Modern Art, New York), much of which had been purchased from Backworks. Designed by Hendricks, the catalogue offers Fluxus editions by Maciunas, works by other Fluxus artists, non-Fluxus graphic works designed by Maciunas, and a tantalizing selection of art ephemera (192 items in total). In addition to numerous Maciunas pieces, we note works by Cage, Corner, Flynt, Friedman, Geoff Hendricks, Higgins, Kaprow, Knizak, Knowles, Kosugi, Mac Low, Moorman, Oldenburg, Ono, Paik, Rainer, Samaras, Schneemann, Shiomi, Spoerri, Vautier, Warhol, Watts, etc. A fine copy, rare in this condition because of the cheap paper used. ❧ A. Description
Florence: F. Onofri, 1680. Zambeccari, Giuseppe (1655-1728). Esperienze . . . intorno a diverse viscere tagliate a diversi animali viventi . . . dedicate all'illustrissimo Signore Francesco Redi. 4to. 30, [2]pp. Florence: Francesco Onofri, 1680. 250 x 182 mm. 19th-century marbled boards, paper spine with printed label, spine a bit soiled, light wear. Minimal spotting, staining on last few leaves but very good. Bookplate. First Edition. One of the earliest works on experimental surgery, containing proof that the spleen is not essential to life. The Esperienze was the only book published by Zambeccari during his lifetime, and it has always been a rarity in commerce. Zambeccari, the son of a government official, studied medicine at Pisa, where one of his professors was the anatomist Lorenzo Bellini. After graduating in 1679, Zambeccari moved to Florence where he continued his medical studies under Francesco Redi. In 1680, with Redi's encouragement, Zambeccari performed the series of physiological experiments for which he is now known; these consisted of removing various organs from live dogs and other animals in order to gain a better understanding of the organs' functions. "One of the first series of experiments dealt with the removal of the spleen; several of the animals operated upon survived, and a few months later they were killed and carefully examined in order to discover what anatomical, pathological, and physiological changes had been caused by the removal of the organ. . . . Turning to the study of other organs, Zambeccari performed unilateral nephrectomies and discovered that the animal apparently was not incommoded by the operation. In other experiments he tied the common bile duct and thus demonstrated that bile is not formed in the gall bladder, as was often the common belief. Encouraged by the results of his experiments, he not only removed the bile duct but also fragments of hepatic tissue, and even entire lobes of the liver, always finding that a good percentage of the animals survived the operation. Zambeccari performed a resection of the cecum and finally went so far as to remove the pancreas and to ligate the mesenteric veins. He also studied the eyes and noted that pricking the cornea of various animals rapidly leads to the reconstitution of the aqueous humor" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Scottish poet James Thomson's The Seasons is a four-part pastoral poem, inspired by Milton's narrative blank verse, consisting of Winter (1726), Summer (1727), Spring (1728) and Autumn (1730). This edition brings all four together with a brief biography of the author. The poem would inspire painters and musicians, including Gainsborough and Bach, and would be translated into French and German; it was also at the center of in two legal disputes over publication copyrights. The Austro-Hungarian -born, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) trained with binders in Stuttgart and in Vienna, before moving to Germany, Switzerland, France, and eventually settling London. He working for various shops before opening his own bindery in 1842. In the face of industrializing production Zaehnsdorf embraced craft and eventually gained recognition for his talent. He was known for his precise finish and elegant design. The firm would continue in his son John William's capable hands; it employed binders like Louis Genth, Roger de Coverly, and Sarah Prideaux. Description
New York: Paul B. Hoeber, 1917. First edition. FIRST EDITION ILLUSTRATED PROCEDURE FOR SURGICAL WOUND CARE DEVELOPED BY BRILLIANT NOBELIST ALEXIS CARREL DURING WORLD WAR I. 7 1/2 inches tall hardcover, burgundy cloth binding, gilt title to cover and spine, i-viii, 238 pp, 97 figures in text, 6 black & white plates, 12 pp publisher's advertisements. Light wear to cover surfaces and corners, spine gilt dulled, light browning to pages, unmarked. Very good in custom archival mylar cover. ALEXIS CARREL (1873 – 1944) was a French surgeon and biologist who spent most of his scientific career in the United States. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912 for pioneering vascular suturing techniques. He invented the first perfusion pump with Charles Lindbergh opening the way to organ transplantation. Carrel was also a pioneer in tissue culture and thoracic surgery. In 1906, he joined the newly formed Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research in New York where he spent the rest of his career. In 1939, Carrel returned to France and took a position with the French Ministry of Health. Due to his close proximity with Jacques Doriot's fascist Parti Populaire Français (PPF) during the 1930s and his role in implementing eugenics policies during Vichy France, he was accused after the Liberation of collaboration but he died before the trial. GEORGES DEHELLY was the French surgeon from Le Havre who worked with Carrel at the hospital in Compeigne during World War I, and published "Surgical Closure of Wounds" Read before the American Surgical Association, June 6, 1918. "The surgeon, considering the diverse methods which present themselves to his initiative in the treatment of war wounds, must give first consideration to the prevention, control or treatment of infection. I shall not speak about the treatment applied in the early days of the war. Immediately after the battle of the Marne the deplorable results of this expectant attitude showed that war wounds were almost all infected, and that in order to avoid grave infectious complications it is necessary to open the wounds widely as quickly as possible, to remove foreign bodies and to drain the wounds. Carrel and Dakin thought that something better might be obtained and that the rational application of a judiciously chosen antiseptic would permit sterilization of these infected wounds and shorten considerably the time of cicatrization. Having charge of surgery in the hospital at Compeigne, annexed to the laboratories of the Rockefeller Institute, I was quickly able to demonstrate the possibilities of this sterilization. Consequently, we were able to assert that if sterilization of a wound must be the first step of this treatment the surgical closure must be the second step, no less indispensable to maintain the disinfection."
