Description
Paris: Chez Brunot-Labbe, 1817. First edition. contemporary morocco over marbled boards. Very Good. EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST WESTERN BOOK ON BUDDHISM. "Although the Western encounter with Asia's largest religion may be the vastest and most consequential spiritual encounter in human history, its protagonists and historical development are still barely known. Thus it comes as no surprise that even specialists have hitherto failed to appreciate the earliest Western book about Buddhism: Michel-Jean-François Ozeray's Recherches sur Buddou ou Bouddou, instituteur religieux de l'Asie orientale (Paris, 1817)... "... Ozeray's book represents a landmark in the history of the Western discovery of Buddhism. Published three years after the establishment of Europe's first academic chairs for indology and sinology and just before the organized academic study of Buddhist texts began, Ozeray's reliance on images and reports by embassies and European residents in Asian countries rather than missionary literature marks a watershed, as does the author's firm advocacy of a single historical founder, his unwillingness to engage in etymological and mythological flights of fancy, and his insistence on Buddhism's status as the largest of all religions of the Orient or even of the entire world. Though the book did not reach a large pan-European readership, it was read by intellectuals interested in Buddhism such as the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, Europe's first professor of Sinology Abel-Rémusat, and the linguist Julius Klaproth. Klaproth and Abel-Rémusat were around the time of publication expressing increasing interest in Buddhism and its history. Both were involved in the birth of France's earliest Orientalist journal, the Journal Asiatique, which from the early 1820s became one of Europe's most important sources of information about Buddhism. Ozeray's book thus stands near the end of the mythological speculation period and near the beginning of organized research on Asia's greatest religion" (Urs App, The First Western Book on Buddhism and Buddha).
Paris: Chez Brunot-Labbe, 1817. Octavo, contemporary half-morocco, marbled boards and endpapers. Complete with half-title. Some scuffing to binding, small closed tear to half-title. Text in outstanding condition with large margins. SCARCE.

1793. [EHON]. TOBA-E SANGOKU-SHI. 3 Vols., Osaka, Kawachiya Kihei and Kawachiya Eisuke, Kansei 5 [1793]. 25.8 x 18.5 cm. Original dark blue covers, string-bound Japanese style, fukuro toji, with the pink printed paper title labels. A nice 18th century edition of this work in good impression. Originally published in the 1720's. Though the artist is unnamed, several candidates have been mentioned, including O^oka Shumboku. 18th century editions of Toba-e books are becoming increasingly uncommon. In a custom clasped chitsu case. The covers are worn, but overall a good copy of this book. An excellent example of the somewhat madcap humor of the Toba-e genre. With a bookseller's advertisement at the end which indicates this edition of the book was part of a series of Toba-ehon brought out by the same publisher - SANGOKUSHI, O^GI NO MATO and TO^BA GURUMA.

Paris: C. Reinwald & Cie, 1894. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. With 49 text illustrations. Morocco-backed marbled boards, spine with gilt decorations and spine label; new endpapers. An excellent copy, clean and without any staining or soiling. First edition in french in book form of the enlarged version of a 1892 paper in Spanish summarizing Cajal’s findings in support of the neuron doctrine. Using Golgi’s staining technique on embryonic tissue, Cajal “established that nerve cell axons, although they ended in the gray matter of the central nervous system in many ways, did not link up with other axon terminals to form networks; and furthermore, that there was no physical continuity between one nerve cell and another” (Norman). Ramon y Cajal established the histological basis of modern neuroscience, for which he shared the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Camillo Golgi. Garrison-Morton 1287 (note); Norman, 1778 (original version in Spanish).

Description
Berlin: Junker und Dünnhaupt, 1937. First edition. Paperback. g. Quarto. 86, [2]pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers. Photographically illustrated propaganda publication glorifying the workers who, under the National Socialists, labor to reconstruct a new Germany. Early propaganda work on the Reichsberufswettkampf (National Vocational Competition) which was the annual vocational competition held in Nazi Germany as part of the Gleichschaltung of German society. The competition was organized by the German Labor Front with the aid of the Hitler Youth and the National Socialist German Students' League. It was held at the local, Gau and national level, and was subdivided into numerous vocational and academic branches. Competitors were tested in the theory and practice of their profession, as well as in their adherence to Nazi ideology. Women were also tested in housekeeping. The winners were presented to Labour Front head Robert Ley and to Hitler in person, and could expect substantial professional advancement. The number of competitors grew from some 500,000 in 1934 at the first competition to 3,500,000 in 1939. Students were admitted in 1935 and adults in 1938. The competition was suspended at the outbreak of World War II in 1939, with the exception of a wartime competition (Kriegsreichsberufswettkampf) in 1944. This volume features 72 full-page b/w photographs of almost exclusively young men being trained and at work in all branches of industry, agriculture and sports. Moderate rubbing along edges of wrappers. Front cover slightly rubbed. Corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in German, gothic script. Wrappers in overall good, interior in good+ condition.

Her influence continued in the next decades, as the Eighteenth (Prohibition) and Nineteenth (Women Suffrage) Amendments to the United States Constitution were adopted. Willard developed the slogan "Do Everything" for the WCTU, encouraging members to engage in a broad array of social reforms through lobbying, petitioning, preaching, publishing, and education. During her lifetime, Willard succeeded in raising the age of consent in many states, as well as passing labor reforms including the eight-hour work day. Her vision also encompassed prison reform, scientific temperance instruction, Christian socialism, and the global expansion of women's rights.
