Description
NY: Knopf, 2010. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. A collectible pairing of first editions of Sondheim's collected lyrics (1954 -1981) with his commentary plus its final volume of lyrics (1981 - 2011), the former plainly signed by Sondheim on the half-tile. Both volumes appear unused, with the dustjacket spines slightly faded. Plainly signed copies of any of Sondheim's works are uncommon, as it was his steadfast practice to always inscribe his books.

1873. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1873. 2 vols, 8vo, xxiii, 412; vii, 446 pp. Engraved portrait frontispieces and one further portrait plate in vol. 2. Half red polished calf, marbled boards and edges, gilt-panelled backstrips (slightly faded), green labels. A very good set, with Humboldt's card and a modern postage stamp in vol. 1. Bookplate of William E. Stuart in each volume. § First edition in English, translated by the daughters of the eminent astronomer William Lassell. The Life was compiled by Bruhns and others to commemorate the centenary of Humboldt's birth and first published in German in 1872. The contributors drew heavily on Humboldt's own letters and the reminiscences of his acquaintances to create a detailed and affectionate account of the life of the extraordinary explorer-naturalist.

Description
1893. August 5, 1893(?). 1 page (114 x 180 mm) laid notepaper, 15 lines in ink on recto, verso blank. Fully mounted on a larger piece of paper; slight shadow from framing, otherwise very good. § A one page autograph letter from George A. Walkem (1834-1908), 3rd Premier of British Columbia from 1874-1876 and 5th Premier from 1878-1882. The last digit of the year is carelessly drawn but seems to suggest 1893. Walkem writes to someone called Russell to cancel that evening's dinner arrangement out of respect to Mrs Russell. Walkem, known as "Boomer" Walkem, was born in Ireland and emigrated to what was then the Colony of British Columbia as a young man. He entered politics as a support of Canadian Confederation and succeeded the eccentric Amor de Cosmos to the premiership in 1874. His governments were characterized by expensive public works projects and anti-Chinese policies. The letter reads in full: "Aug 5/93 / Dear Russell, Upon reflection I think that we had better drop this evg's dinner engagement. It would be a bad compliment to Mrs Russell to break in upon her evening's pleasure by deferring it till 9 or 10 p.m. You would be uncomfortable and so would I. Some other opportunity, I hope, will soon occur when we shall be able to have an evening to ourselves. I withdrew the other(?) invitation this morning. Please give my regards to Mrs R. [one word illeg.] Geo. A Walkem.

Description
[N.p., but likely in or near San Mateo, Ca, 1950. Good.. Panoramic photograph, 8 x 52.25 inches. Moderate scuffing, soiling, some small creases, a few short closed tears, one repaired on verso, pinholes at corners and along edges. A wider-than-usual panoramic photograph capturing for posterity many of the commercial enterprises along Main Street in San Mateo, California in the mid-20th century. The unnamed photographer seems to have stood directly across from the Tecco Electric Construction Company and shot that side of Main Street from San Mateo Florist and Mohawk Gasoline to the left to well beyond the B.F. Goodrich on the right. Some of the other businesses include Sarganis Brothers Custom Interiors, Peninsula Wrought Iron Works, H.H. MacDonald Homes (offering houses in Glenwood Heights), Ferreira Paints, and L.K. Ward Home Appliances. A handful of blurry automobiles are pictured driving one way or another on the main thoroughfare. A wonderful snapshot of midcentury San Mateo that would make a striking display piece in any midcentury-styled home.

Description
Madison, Wisconsin: David Fine Freedom Committee, 1976. Unbound. Fine. Political poster. Measuring 17" x 22". Former owner signature on unprinted verso. Horizontal fold and very light vertical crease (an old fold) else fine. Prints an unattributed political poem (beginning "They call it terror / if you are few / and have no B-52's...") and a portrait of Fine dated April 1970. Four months after the picture was taken, an 18-year-old David Fine, an antiwar protester and student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, detonated a large truck bomb outside of the building that held the university's Army Mathematics Research Center (and physics department) killing a post-doctoral researcher who was working late, and injuring three others. (The bombers claimed to have looked through the windows and, seeing no activity, assumed the hall was empty.) Fine was on the run for nearly six years. Upon his capture, a former roommate chaired a fundraising committee for him in Fine's hometown of Wilmington, and this "Freedom Committee" was founded in Madison.

Description
[New Haven, Connecticut]: Yale School of Drama, 1966. Unbound. Very Good. Poster (29" x 38 ½"). Designed by Joel Katz for Megan Terry's rock musical *Viet Rock* at the Yale Repertory Theatre on October 11-23, 1966 with music composed by Marianne de Pury. Appears to be a facsimile of the original poster on thinner material, with Katz's copyright information canceled. Rolled, a couple small chips and light creases with a 1½ inch tear at the edge, rippling, sunning at the edges, moderate toning and a small piece of tape on verso, very good. Terry is an American playwright, screenwriter, and a founding member of the experimental theater group, The Open Theater in New York City. She created *Viet Rock* using a technique she developed called "transformation", in which actors would improvise dialogue in an attempt to "transform" into characters. *Viet Rock* was the first play to address America's involvement in the Vietnam War, and also the first rock musical to be written and performed in the United States. The play was described by Terry as a "folk war movie" about the "futilities and irrelevancies" of war. The poster here is for the play's preview run at the Yale Repertory Theatre before opening off-Broadway. Cast member, Gerome Ragni along with fellow actor James Rando, would go on to use the anti-war theme and Terry's "transformation" technique to create the rock musical, *Hair.* A striking poster for a groundbreaking and influential rock musical.

PHILIP HENRY GOSSE (1810 – 1888) was an English naturalist, scientific illustrator, lecturer, entrepreneur, and pioneer in the study of marine biology and ornithology. At 15, he began work as a clerk in the counting house of George Garland and Sons in Poole. In 1827 he sailed to Newfoundland to serve as a clerk in the Carbonear premises of Slade, Elson and Co. There he became a dedicated, self-taught student of Newfoundland entomology. In 1838 Gosse taught for eight months for Reuben Saffold, the owner of Belvoir plantation, near Pleasant Hill, Alabama. In this period, planters often hired private tutors to teach their children. Returning to England in 1839, Gosse opened a "Classical and Commercial School for Young Gentlemen" while keeping detailed records of his microscopic investigations of pond life. In 1843, Gosse gave up the school to write An Introduction to Zoology. Writing the work inspired him to further his interest in the flora and fauna of the seashore. In October 1844 Gosse went to Jamaica, where he collected natural history specimens for sale. Meanwhile, Gosse had taken up the study of orchids and exchanged a number of letters on the subject with Darwin, though he never published on this subject himself. However, he did publish many popular illustrated books on natural history, including the two volumes offered here--embellished with some fanciful images. The engraving of The Gorilla (frontispiece of Vol. I) is pictured in Boria Sax, "Imaginary Animals: The Monstrous, the Wondrous and the Human" (2013).

Description
Beverly Hills, California: Printed in Beverly Hills by the Beverly Hills Citizen, 1929. Cover design and titles by Vivian V. Robeson. Foreword by Will Rogers. Octavo (21 x 15.5 cm.), [xiv], 189 pages. Advertisements. Illustrated title page. Includes table of contents and indexes. Stated "Second Edition June, 1930"; printed the same year as the first edition. Some starry names accompany a fair number of the six hundred recipes of this community cookbook, among the celebrities: Ina Claire, Joan Crawford, Mildred Davis, Douglas Fairbanks, Janet Gaynor, Lucile Gleason, Kay Johnson, Buster Keaton, Carol Lombard, Marilyn Morgan (pseud. Marian Marsh), Ramón Novarro, Mary Pickford, Zazu Pitts, Dolores del Río, Barbara Stanwyck, Erich von Stroheim, Norma Talmadge, Helen Twelvetrees, Henry Walthall. A great many recipes reveal that stars ate as economically as everyone else (basic Pie Crust is dispatched by Douglas Fairbanks), but a few idiosyncracies sneak in: Broiled Barracuda; Wakimoli Salad (Guacamole, one assumes, evidently a novelty in Beverly Hills), Lima Bean Muffins, Peruvian Chicken, East India Squab Nest, Sweet Potatoes in Orange Cases. A "Childrens' Corner" appends recipes submitted by children – including an Orange Souffle Pie sent in by Chubby Chaney (of the series Our Gang). Now spelled "Beverly Hills Women's Club", the social organization was founded in 1916, just in time to assume the role of an American Red Cross unit for the Los Angeles region. In the mid-1920s they embarked on a drive to fund a dedicated clubhouse, the same Spanish Colonial building that still stands at the corner of Chevy Chase and Benedict Canon Drives, north of Sunset Boulevard. The club still sponsors many social events on the Beverly Hills calendar; the house itself was recently listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Bound in publisher's white cloth with black and gray Art Deco design and lettering; lightly soiled. Endpapers foxed and some age-toning. Very good. With the bookseller ticket of Marion Gore. [OCLC locates fifteen copies of the first edition; Brown 169; Cagle 91; Glozer 30].
