Unique volume of an international gay travel guide which, according to the front wrap, features "bars, baths, beaches, boutiques, clubs, cruising areas, parks, promenades, restaurants, shops, tea rooms, theatres."An amateurish, haphazard production with cities given in alphabetical order regardless of the country where they're located, making use quite inefficient. The individual listings simply give the business name, address and phone number — but with no indication of the type of the establishment.Compared to earlier guides such as the Lavender Baedeker and the Guide Gris and contemporaneous guides such as Damron and Spartacus, Gay Guide of the World is at best perfunctory. For instance, only 13 istings are offered for the entire San Francisco Bay Area.The final two pages are devoted to a table headed "You and the Law" listing 51 countries alongside columns indicating data for "Implicitly Punishable," "Punishable as Protection for Youth Only" and "Age Limit."The cover art is the high point for this guide: A classic drawing by prolific African American sleaze illustrator Gene Bilbrew (1923–1974) — but one that reflects his style and gay iconography from circa 10 years before the guide was published.Imprinted tracings on the outside margin of several pages indicate "Where It's At," set in the distinctive logotype of the gay periodical Where It's At, published in New York City 1972–1978). The tracing suggests the publisher of the magazine at the time, Hudson House Enterperises, had a role in production of the guide. The copy offered here includes manuscript annotations from a previous owner revising the listings for El Paso, Texas, and Norfolk, Va. CONDITION: Wraps somewhat worn; diagonal crease from top to bottom of rear wrap; small scribble in black ballpoint on rear wrap; fraying to outside margin of three leaves (production error in trimming by binder); scattered marginalia in black ink.
