Description
[No-place: no-publisher, no-date] circa 1920s. First edition. 197-page manuscript of an unpublished work. Horton's stated intent was to "record the names of many soldiers of the World War and show their descent from soldiers of former wars"; and, in doing so, she brought together numerous "sketches" (brief biographies) of Tennesseans who served in WWI and in wars prior as well as details of various local women's relief efforts during WWI. According to Horton's foreword, she made appeals through the press and to various women's organizations for the information compiled herein. Horton's handwritten "Summary" of contents notes her inclusion of "103 SOLDIERS OF WORLD WAR with line of descent established from soldiers of the American Revolution. 147 SOLDIERS OF WORLD WAR [ONE] with line of descent established from soldiers of War of 1812. 30 SKETCHES OF WORLD WAR [ONE] SOLDIERS some of whose ancestral lines are traced through Colonial times. 25 SKETCHES OF SOLDIERS of 1812. 15 SKETCHES OF MEN AND WOMEN who did World War [One] Relief work. 7 SKETCHES OF SOLDIERS NOT GENERALLY KNOWN of the American Revolution. 5 SKETCHES OF CONFEDERATE ANCESTORS of World War [One] soldiers. CERTIFIED ROSTER of all enlisted men of Williamson County, Tennessee who served in World War [One], including Battery 7.114 Field Artillery which included some men from other counties." Horton also notes the later addition of "2 ADDITIONAL SOLDIERS of World War [One] with line of descent established from soldiers of the American Revolution and from soldiers of War of 1812." [Note: the alphabetical typewritten roster of "Williamson County men" was compiled by "Dr. K. S. Howlett of the Franklin Red Cross" and includes "COLORED" SOLDIERS who he (or she) groups separately.] Bound tablet style in quarto, oblong, red cloth-covered flexible boards with handwritten label on front. Includes 160 handwritten pages and 37 typewritten; text mostly on rectos throughout, with the occasional continuation to versos; two newspaper clippings inserted, one of which prints Horton's 1918 appeal for information in "The Banner"; 3-page typewritten addition loosely sewn in at rear. Horton was the author of several family histories and member of several civic organizations including the U.S. Daughters of 1812 for which she was "State historian" from 1915-1922. This work appears to have been performed over several years on behalf of the U.S. Daughters of 1812 for inclusion in the Tennessee state record. It is unrecorded by OCLC and does not appear to have been recorded elsewhere. We would surmise this was Horton's working draft copy and/or made up for her own use. Fair to good condition with front-cover label chipping affecting a few words; bend in covers causing cracking to pastedowns (not affecting text of Horton's handwritten title and "compiled by" notations at front); minor nicks and small chips to page edges; text block detached from spine at rear; interior still overall very good. Understandably rare.
