Description
London: Printed by the Society, 1881. FIRST SEPARATE PRINTING. With 30 hand-colored lithographed plates by J. Smit. Half-morocco and marbled boards, recent endpapers; with the exception of very minor discoloration to the half-title, an absolutely exquisite copy with bright and clean plates. First separate printing. The complete ornithological report, with excellent illustrations, on the nearly 900 specimens collected by the expedition. “The collection [of birds] was formed under the superintendence of Mr. John Murray, one of the naturalists of the Expedition, and the skins were chiefly prepared by Mr. Frederick Pearcey, who accompanied the vessel as taxidermist” (introduction). The H.M.S. Challenger sailed over 70,000 miles during her extended voyage of exploration. Sclater (1829-1913), a well-known and highly productive (over 1400 publications) ornithologist by trade, is also remembered for his 1858 paper setting out the faunal regions classification of zoogeography later adopted by Alfred Russel Wallace. He was the founder and for many years the editor of Ibis, secretary of the Zoological Society of London, a member of more than forty professional societies at home and abroad, and a council member of the Royal Society of London.

Description
London: W. Strahan, 1783. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary sheep rebacked with cloth, spine label, boards rubbed, corners worn; interior very good. First edition of this collection of dissertations from Beattie, a distinguished member of the Scottish school of philosophy. Titles include “On Memory and Imagination”; “On Dreaming”; “The Theory of Language”; “On Fable and Romance”; “On the Attachments of Kindred”; and “Illustrations of Sublimity”. The poet and philosopher Beattie (1735-1803) was a major figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. One of his biographers, Roger J. Robinson, describes the Dissertations as Beattie’s “best prose work” and draws particular attention to the treatise on the theory of language. On reading this book, Cowper declared that “Beattie was the only author he had seen ‘whose critical and philosophical researches are diversified and embellished by a poetical imagination that makes even the driest subject and the leanest a feast for epicures’” (DNB). To delve slightly into his text, for example, his essay on memory distinguishes between memory and imagination and provides methods of improving one’s memory; his theory of language focuses on formation of words, accents, writing and grammar. Though a poet early on, Beattie’s Essay on Truth (1770) made a name for him as a proponent of the common sense school of the Scottish Enlightenment and successfully irritated both Hume and Kant. DNB II pp. 22-25; Encyclopedia of Philosophy 1&2 pp. 262-263.

Description
Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1972. Collection of 18 vintage studio still photographs from the 1972 film. Based on Woody Allen's 1969 play. A comedy that is pretty difficult to overestimate. Even though it was not directed by Woody Allen, it was the template for the many great films he would subsequently write and direct in the 1970s, in terms of shooting style, timing, romantic themes, and the actors involved (the irrepressible trio of Allen, Keaton, and Roberts). Allen had already directed two films at this point ("Take the Money and Run" and "Bananas"), but this film is significant in that it predicted the more substantive romantic comedies that would later place him among the most important filmmakers of his era, notably "Annie Hall" (1977) and "Manhattan" (1979). Shot on location in California. 8 x 10 inches. Couple with light corner or edgewear, else Near Fine. Grant US.

Description
1921. First Edition. TYLER, E[dward]. R. Slaveholding a Malum in Se, or Invariably Sinful. Harford: S.S. Cowles, 1839. Octavo, original tan self-wrappers, original stitching; pp. (1-3), 4-48. $1200.First edition of Tyler's searing analysis of arguments defending slavery in this incendiary work that prompted local leaders to offer gunpowder to ""blow the damned abolitionist down,"" delivered by him in a Brattleboro chapel as a ""mob formed outside… cannons were fired,"" with Tyler especially demolishing pro-slavery claims that enslaved people willingly choose slavery, exceedingly scarce in original self-wrappers.In 1837 Rev. Edward Royal Tyler, the son of Revolutionary leader, jurist and author Royall Tyler, stood in Elliot Street Chapel to deliver this highly controversial abolition address in which he declared a ""slaveholding government"" to be any that ""authorizes individuals to deprive their fellow men of self-ownership… forever."" Tyler intended to establish a Brattleboro chapter of the American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS) despite warnings by local leaders, including one who proclaimed he ""would provide the gun powder if the mob would blow the damned abolitionist down."" As Tyler began to speak a ""mob formed outside… cannons were fired off and pots and pans were clanged to intimidate those who might go into the chapel."" His mother wrote in her journal: ""Great doings: Edward delivered a lecture on abolition… cannons were fired and all manner of noises were made… nevertheless, Edward proceeded undaunted."" At the subsequent first meeting of the Brattleboro AASS he declared: ""The time is coming when you will be compelled to take one side or the other, for this is not simply a question of negro-slavery, it is the cause of human rights. The institutions of freedom are in imminent danger"" (Brattleboro Historical Society).Tyler's Slaveholding a malum in se (an innately immoral act regardless of legal stature) is now esteemed as ""a neglected masterpiece of abolitionist literature."" In its pages he presents a detailed historical and juridical analysis of arguments used to rationalize and authorize slavery, especially the popular pro-slavery concept of happy slaves, which was defended by an ""ask the slave test"" that argued ""the slave, not the slave master, was the only reliable authority"" on enslavement (Growler, Radical Orthodoxy, 612-13). Tyler soundly demolishes this idea of an enslaved person who ""washes his master in innocence."" He states: ""If it is right to hold those only in slavery, who are willing… no one is justified in enforcing the laws of slavery. The laws which declare one man the property of another, thus sanctioning his forcible detention as chattel, are all wrong… the argument is suicidal. It annihilates itself"" (emphasis in original). Essentially, this false logic signals a ""relationship in which consent to another's authority must be continually given for that authority to remain in effect"" and, as such, ""is not a master-slave relationship at all"" (Gowler, 613). Sabin 97699. Not in Blockson. Text very fresh with scant foxing mainly to wrappers, trace of marginal dampstaining above title page. A rare near-fine copy in original self-wrappers.

Description
London: Chapman & Hall, April to September 1870 Illustrated with 12 plates Samuel Luke Fildes, and an engraved portrait of Dickens and a vignette title page. First edition in six original parts; Part 6 in earliest state with "Price Eighteenpence" pasted over the printed "Price One Shilling" (later states are printed with the corrected price). With most of the original advertisements, including the scarce "Cork Hats" slip in Part 2, with the following exceptions: Part 2 lacking last two pp. of "Edwin Drood Advertiser," Part 5 lacking "Chapman & Hall's Recent Publications" (8 pp.) to rear, and Part 6 lacking "Concerning Stitches" (4 pp.) and "A New World at Home for busy people" (4 pp.) to rear. Part 4 with uncommon Chapman & Hall "Recent Publications" remainer, seen by Hatton and Cleaver in about 10% of copies examined. Publisher's blue-green pictorial wrappers, printed in black. Very good set, with some discrete repair to spines of Parts 1-4, Parts 5 and 6 neatly rebacked, bindings of Parts 1 and 4 a bit shaky (Part 4 split along spine, but holding), mostly clean wrappers, some edgewear, former owner's name to front wrappers of Parts 2 and 3, occasional spotting to pages, staining to edges of some plates, and a tear to "Cork Hats" slip in Part 2. Overall, a clean and complete set. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco slipcase with a matching chemise. Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 373-84. Originally published serially in six monthly installments, The Mystery of Edwin Drood was also published in book form on August 31, 1870. Both the later serial installments and the first book form edition were published posthumously after Dickens' death in June 1870, leaving the novel unfinished. The story is named after the titular character Edwin Drood, although the text largely focuses on his uncle John Jasper, an opium addict and choir master who is romantically interested in his nephew's fiancé. In the story, Drood disappears under mysterious circumstances, and, due to Dicken's premature death at age 58, the mystery is never resolved. Accordingly, many of the novel's fans speculate as to whether or not Drood is dead and, if so, who killed him. Many authors have attempted to resolve the plot, including Dickens' son Charley in 1873 and Thomas James, a Vermont-based printer and con artist who claimed to have channeled the deceased Dickens and learned his intended ending for the novel.. First Edition. Original Parts. Very Good. Illus. by Fildes, Samuel Luke.

The basis for the 1966 film of the same name, starring Sean Connery, Joanne Woodward, and Jean Seberg. The inscription in this copy is to Delbert Mann, who was first announced as the film's director at the time the rights to the novel were first acquired in 1964, at which time the film was to be produced at M-G-M (the inscription dates from the month after the deal was announced). Alas, however, Mann was denied the opportunity to justify the author's "total confidence," as by the time the film went into production (now at Warner Bros.) he had been replaced by Irvin Kershner; the screenplay was by Baker himself. Signed by Author .
