Description
[N.p., but likely in or near San Mateo, Ca, 1950. Good.. Panoramic photograph, 8 x 52.25 inches. Moderate scuffing, soiling, some small creases, a few short closed tears, one repaired on verso, pinholes at corners and along edges. A wider-than-usual panoramic photograph capturing for posterity many of the commercial enterprises along Main Street in San Mateo, California in the mid-20th century. The unnamed photographer seems to have stood directly across from the Tecco Electric Construction Company and shot that side of Main Street from San Mateo Florist and Mohawk Gasoline to the left to well beyond the B.F. Goodrich on the right. Some of the other businesses include Sarganis Brothers Custom Interiors, Peninsula Wrought Iron Works, H.H. MacDonald Homes (offering houses in Glenwood Heights), Ferreira Paints, and L.K. Ward Home Appliances. A handful of blurry automobiles are pictured driving one way or another on the main thoroughfare. A wonderful snapshot of midcentury San Mateo that would make a striking display piece in any midcentury-styled home.

Description
[New Haven, Connecticut]: Yale School of Drama, 1966. Unbound. Very Good. Poster (29" x 38 ½"). Designed by Joel Katz for Megan Terry's rock musical *Viet Rock* at the Yale Repertory Theatre on October 11-23, 1966 with music composed by Marianne de Pury. Appears to be a facsimile of the original poster on thinner material, with Katz's copyright information canceled. Rolled, a couple small chips and light creases with a 1½ inch tear at the edge, rippling, sunning at the edges, moderate toning and a small piece of tape on verso, very good. Terry is an American playwright, screenwriter, and a founding member of the experimental theater group, The Open Theater in New York City. She created *Viet Rock* using a technique she developed called "transformation", in which actors would improvise dialogue in an attempt to "transform" into characters. *Viet Rock* was the first play to address America's involvement in the Vietnam War, and also the first rock musical to be written and performed in the United States. The play was described by Terry as a "folk war movie" about the "futilities and irrelevancies" of war. The poster here is for the play's preview run at the Yale Repertory Theatre before opening off-Broadway. Cast member, Gerome Ragni along with fellow actor James Rando, would go on to use the anti-war theme and Terry's "transformation" technique to create the rock musical, *Hair.* A striking poster for a groundbreaking and influential rock musical.

Description
1893. August 5, 1893(?). 1 page (114 x 180 mm) laid notepaper, 15 lines in ink on recto, verso blank. Fully mounted on a larger piece of paper; slight shadow from framing, otherwise very good. § A one page autograph letter from George A. Walkem (1834-1908), 3rd Premier of British Columbia from 1874-1876 and 5th Premier from 1878-1882. The last digit of the year is carelessly drawn but seems to suggest 1893. Walkem writes to someone called Russell to cancel that evening's dinner arrangement out of respect to Mrs Russell. Walkem, known as "Boomer" Walkem, was born in Ireland and emigrated to what was then the Colony of British Columbia as a young man. He entered politics as a support of Canadian Confederation and succeeded the eccentric Amor de Cosmos to the premiership in 1874. His governments were characterized by expensive public works projects and anti-Chinese policies. The letter reads in full: "Aug 5/93 / Dear Russell, Upon reflection I think that we had better drop this evg's dinner engagement. It would be a bad compliment to Mrs Russell to break in upon her evening's pleasure by deferring it till 9 or 10 p.m. You would be uncomfortable and so would I. Some other opportunity, I hope, will soon occur when we shall be able to have an evening to ourselves. I withdrew the other(?) invitation this morning. Please give my regards to Mrs R. [one word illeg.] Geo. A Walkem.
