Description
17 characters per column; 24 columns per sheet. Each sheet: ca. 450 mm. long. Text-block height: 207 mm. Eight scrolls (297 x 10,785; 12,480; 11,600; 10,430; 11,190; 10,190; 10,130; 9000 mm.), all with front endpapers speckled on inside with square-cut gold, silver, & copper foil, outer endpapers dyed reddish-orange & with clouds of gold, silver, & copper mottling. Seven of the eight scrolls have on the outside of the front endpaper an orig. label stating “Myohorengekyo” [“Glory to the Dharma of the Lotus Sutra”], and its volume number. All with wooden rollers. [Japan: late Muromachi to early Edo]. A handsomely produced woodblock-printed edition of the complete Lotus Sutra in 28 chapters, originally translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva and completed in 406. The Lotus Sutra is the most influential of all sutra and “was highly influential in East Asia, inspiring both a range of devotional practices as well as the creation of new Buddhist schools that had no Indian analogues.”–Buswell & Lopez, eds., The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism, p. 730. For several Japanese schools of Buddhism, the Lotus Sutra remains their central text and is considered to be the only valid Buddhist sutra for the Degenerate Age. These handsome scrolls have been printed on high-quality paper (gampi, or mulberry fibers), with a light sprinkling of mica dust, and printed in bold, thick strokes, using black lacquer-like sumi ink, typical of Kamakura and Muromachi Kasuga-ban printings. Kumarajiva (344-413), Buddhist monk, scholar, missionary, and translator, who came from the Silk Road kingdom of Kucha, was famous for his encyclopedic knowledge of Indian and Vendantic learning. He was the greatest translator of Buddhist scripture from Sanskrit into Chinese, and it was largely owing to his efforts and influence that Buddhist religious and philosophical ideas were disseminated in China. Following many years of study in Kucha and Kashmir, he arrived in Chang’an (now Xi’an), in 401, with a great reputation. He became known as “teacher of the nation.” There, he headed a famous school of translators, and together they translated many important texts into Chinese, including the Vimalakirti, the Diamond, the Lotus, and the Amitabha sutra. It is most unusual to find on the market an early printing of a long sutra, like the Lotus Sutra, textually complete; usually one finds just one part of a text in one scroll. Complete sets of this work are of the greatest rarity. A fine set, clean and fresh. The third scroll has some worming to the final quarter of the text, touching and affecting characters. At the end of the final scroll is a manuscript note, dated “9 July 1646,” signed by a Buddhist practitioner named Nichi’en. At the beginning of the first scroll and at the end of the final scroll, we find the names in manuscript of two donors, Jo’an and Myo’an, members of the Nichiren sect. Above their signatures in the eighth scroll, they have written in a very beautiful calligraphic style, “Namumyohorengekyo Nichiren Daibosatsu.” ❧ K.B. Gardner, “Centres of Printing in Medieval Japan: late Heian to early Edo period” in British Library Occasional Papers 11. Japanese Studies (ed. by Yu-Ying Brown), London: 1990, p. 159–”The term Kasuga-ban became used more loosely, in a wider sense, to denote publications of the Nara monasteries in general, not only of the Kofukuji. The printing of Kasuga-ban in this broader sense flourished throughout the Kamakura period and up to the end of Muromachi (ca. 1570).”.

Description
62 pp. Small 8vo (200 x 130 mm.), late 19th-cent. sheep-backed marbled boards (joints a bit rubbed), spine gilt. Paris: Perrot & Pieri-Bénard, 1826. The very rare sale catalogue describing the history painter’s art collection and library. Le Barbier (1738-1826) espoused the Neoclassical tenets of David and Vien and executed a number of pictures in a similar style. He also engaged with sculpture, tapestry, and book illustration, and consistently exhibited at the Salon de Paris beginning in 1781. In addition to a choice collection of art, Le Barbier possessed a sizable library rich in literature, fine arts, and ancient history. This catalogue opens with a lengthy and useful biography of Le Barbier. 476 lots are listed, including paintings, drawings, prints, furniture, and books. Lots 1-12 & 28-44 consist of paintings and drawings by Le Barbier. His collections of shells and minerals, coins, and curiosities are combined into lots 53 and 54, respectively. The contents of his library are enumerated from lot 59 to 373. This catalogue concludes with more than 100 lots of prints and print portfolios. A very good copy; unfortunate Scotch tape repair to tail of spine. Two contemporary ink corrections to the title and p. 41. With the engraved bookplate of G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), the art dealer and collector of auction catalogues, on the inside of the upper cover, and the stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of title. ❧ Lugt 11299. Description
Berlin: August Hirschwald, 1858. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary paper over boards, worn with some tears on edges and corners, spine label; interior in good condition with only some minor spotting. First edition. Remak was the first to develop electrotherapy using the galvanic current as a treatment, claiming that the electricity the procedure produced had a catalytic effect. This in turn aided in the cure of many different nervous and muscular ailments. He treated around 700 patients using the galvanic current, which he argued was a superior method to the previously used faradic current. Today, galvanotherapy (now electro-chemical-therapy or ECT) is used primarily to treat cancer, applying electric current to tumors attempting to the change pH values and electric field in the tissue. Remak (1815–1865) was a Jewish Polish-German physician and an important figure in the field of neurology. In addition to his work in electrotherapy, he also discovered that cells were the product of the division of pre-existing cells in the body by studying chicken embryos and frog eggs (a discovery that Rudolf Virchow claimed as his own). Remak also reconfigured Karl Ernst von Baer’s four germ layers to three. However, despite his achievements, he never received full professor status at the University of Berlin where he taught. He eventually was appointed assistant professor––the first Jewish individual to achieve that rank. DSB, XI, pp. 367-70; Garrison & Morton, 4534; Haymaker and Schiller, Founders of Neurology, p. 68; Rowbottom and Susskind, Electricity and Medicine, pp. 103-8; Schmiedebach, “Robert Remak (1815–1865). Publisher’s cloth, author and title in gilt on spine, boards a bit worn; interior very good. With an ownership inscription on the fly-leaf dated 1874. First edition. Rankine (1820-1872) was a professor of civil engineering and mechanics at Glasgow. He was distinguished for his work on molecular physics and for his early studies of railway locomotion. Included are nineteen “songs” (including the overlap of science and humor in his “The mathematician in Love” and observations on relationships in “The engine-driver to his engine” among others) and twelve fables which attempt to explain “the origin and meaning of some of our old and popular sign-boards” (preface). All in all, a valiant effort at literature from a highly respected scientist.

Description
London: John Jaques & Son, 1895. Box. Good. A scarce card game, abundantly illustrated, from a leading manufacturer and inventor of games -- the firm of John Jaques goes back to 1795! 45 cards, representing nine countries, with each country having a card which has a color vignette of its flag and the name of cities below. Each of the named cities also receives a card, dominated with a color illustration of the city, below which are captions that set forth a salient fact or facts about the city (usually there are several points made). The deck is complete, based on all the cities mentioned on the flag cards are present, and the card box is obviously at capacity. We lack an instruction sheet or brochure which had to have come with the game. Our best guess is that the game was a variant on the Game of Families -- one of the many iconic games invented by the Jaques company -- although the variant number of cards per country might undermine our supposition. In any event, the interest, at least to us, is not the game per se but the imagery, which is delightful. Curiously, the United Kingdom is broken down into three countries -- England, Ireland and Scotland -- each with 7, 5 and 5 cards, respectively. The other countries are France, 7 cards; Belgium, 4; Holland, 4; Switzerland, 4; Spain, 6; Portugal, 3. The backs of cards are all simply pink, as often encountered in game and tarot cards of the nineteenth century. In terms of scarcity, there is but one institutional copy listed on OCLC First Search -- a Japanese institution. The listing specifies 48 cards. Either this is an error, or the instructions were on cards. There is a website for Jaques card games which has pictured a deck, with two country cards missing. There were no decks we could find in commerce on the date of our cataloguing. The V & A has a fairly extensive collection of Jaques card games; this game is not among its holdings. Our dating is based on the description of the two decks we did find. The dating, though, is best viewed as approximate. We would have dated the deck somewhat earlier but for these descriptions. We do realize that an exact dating is probably attainable since the Jaques company is still in business. The cards are a standard size: 9.5 by 7.5 cm. The box is about 3 cm thick. A few of the cards are heavily soiled, with the majority having some soiling, and some come off as essentially clean. All the cards are fully legible, with no loss or obscuring of the text or imagery. The original box has a good amount of wear, with torn edges, soiling, and the like, all rather typical for a card box. The pasted on label with the game name and publisher is fully intact.

This is the De Luxe edition of this work, which was limited to 200 number copies - this is copy 125. Profusely illustrated work on the history of cartography in Kansas. Though the book is listed under the authorship of Baughman it is certain that Morgan was responsible for most or all of this work or substantial editing. A typewritten draft of the manuscript in his style and with his editing resides in the Morgan Papers at the Bancroft Library. It is unquestionably of his creation. He does at least appear at the head of the list of acknowledgments. Variant of Saunders 35.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: This is a reissue of a book published by the Clarendon Press in 1970 with a new introduction to take account of recent developments in the history of 19th century neuroscience. The author examines ideas of the nature and localization of the functions of the brain in the light of the philosophical constraints at work in the sciences of mind and brain in the 19th century. Particular attention is paid to phrenology, sensory--motor physiology, associationist psychology, and the theory of evolution as applied to the study of psychology. The author argues that the methods and assumptions of modern science achieved apparent success in this domain at the expense of the biological approach which justified the integration of formerly disparate traditions. The method of historical case study is used to illuminate the assumptions of current research.(Publisher).
