Description
1930. Press photographs of Anna May Wong produced between 1943 and 1949 document the career of the first Asian American woman to achieve international film stardom and provide visual evidence of her navigation of racialized casting practices within the Hollywood studio system. These images place Wong within both wartime propaganda cinema and postwar film production, identifying her participation in American cultural messaging during World War II and her continued presence in the industry despite longstanding exclusion from leading roles. The archive supports research into Asian American representation, gender and race in film, and the visual culture of studio publicity in mid twentieth century America. Archive consists of four silver gelatin press photographs, each approximately 8.5 x 11 inches, with production markings and captions on the recto or margins indicating use in promotional distribution. One photograph is a film still from Impact (1949) showing Wong holding a newspaper opposite actor Philip Ahn, documenting her return to Hollywood after extended work abroad. A second still from Bombs Over Burma (1943) depicts Wong as Lin Ying, a schoolteacher turned resistance figure, standing beside co star Noel Madison in a wartime setting with military equipment visible, situating her within Allied propaganda narratives. An additional close up image presents Wong in period costume before a carved Chinese panel, reflecting the visual conventions through which Asian identity was staged in studio productions. The final photograph is a studio portrait labeled "ANNA MAY WONG in Paramount," showing her in contemporary hairstyle and dress, emphasizing her image outside explicitly racialized roles. These photographs were circulated during a period when Hollywood maintained restrictive casting systems that limited Asian American performers to stereotyped or secondary roles, even as Wong achieved international recognition through work in Europe and the United States. Her participation in wartime films aligned her screen image with Allied political messaging, while studio portraits promoted her as a modern celebrity within American popular culture. The contrast between costumed and contemporary representations within the archive provides direct evidence of the tension between imposed roles and self presentation in her career. Minimal edge wear and light toning with surfaces clean and images sharp; overall very good condition. This archive offers a focused visual record of Anna May Wong's film career and the structures that shaped Asian American visibility in early Hollywood.

Description
Madison, Wisconsin: The Juniper Press, 1987. No. 116 OF 150 COPIES. 632 x 250 mm. (25 x 9 3/4"). 2p.l., 19 [1] pp. Black quarter buckram over maroon marbled paper boards, spine lettered in gilt. In a custom maroon buckram clamshell box. WITH 24 FACSIMILE GLOBE GORES. Signed by Woodward on the limitation page. Just a hint of use to the box, booklet corners just a touch rubbed, otherwise as new. This sizable, attractive publication reproduces one of the largest complete sets of 16th century globe gores. Dating from around 1574, the original gores, which, when assembled, would make a globe measuring just under 70 centimeters in diameter, have been attributed to brothers Livio and Giulio Sanuto, Venetian cartographers and engravers. Little is known about the gores' origin; the accompanying essay suggests they may have never made it to the final stages of publication and production, possibly stopped by an outbreak of plague. This facsimile was created from the only extant set, in the collection of Arthur Holzheimer (1932-2025), and was produced by his research foundation, along with the Newberry Library. The gores are accompanied by a booklet by noted cartography scholar David Woodward (1942-2004), which provides background and the evidence supporting the attribution of the gores to the Sanuto brothers..

Description
New York: Mutual Life Insurance Company of New-York, 1875. Octavo (18.5 x 13 cm.), 126 pages. Illustrated. Appendix. Index. Stated "Enlarged edition" and "one hundred twentieth thousand". Author name from OCLC records. While all recorded printings prior to this are dated 1875, the "one hundred tenth thousand" and other lower numbers contain the printers slug "S.W. Green, Printer". This work appeared in shorter form(64 pages) in 1874, credited to Alexis Paul Turner (1840-1892), for sale by James Hammond, and "Distributed through the Howard Hospital and Infirmary for Incurables, 1518 and 1520 Lombard Street, Philadelphia." The many subsequent printings were publications of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. It's only fitting that an insurance company would publish a guide to first aid in the home. And this guide, developed by doctors at Howard Hospital, was "Distributed to its policy-holders by the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New-York, F.S. Winston, President." Some light age-toning to text block. Gray wrapper, titled and decorated in black, and with a printed number ticket applied to spine; some light wear to wrapper at spine, otherwise near fine. The wrapper contains the stamps of "Amos D. Smith, General Agent, Boston" and "Highland Springs Public Library". [OCLC locates no copies labled "one hundred twentieth thousand" and just twenty copies of all 1875 printings; just one copy of the 64 page, 1874 edition].
