Description
1835. [EHON] SHIOJI YOSHIAKI [YABU KAKUDÔ] artist. KAKUDÔ GAFU. A lovely printing of this wonderful album of color woodblock images in the Maruyama-Shijô idiom. 25.7 x 18.6 cm. This is the 1835 edition (Tempô 6), as at Mitchell 330, but with only 7 of the original 25 double fold prints in delicate color woodblock. In the original covers, orihon folding album, in a clasped chitsu case. Very unusual. Possibly a [binder?]'s abridged copy made up of sheets at hand or a restorer's rescue of undamaged prints. In any event, a fragment and priced accordingly.

[good sound clean copy, minor wear to lower extremities; the jacket is edgeworn and lightly soiled, with various tiny chips and tears, with a wide shallow chip at the top of the rear panel, and about a half-inch of paper loss at the top of the spine]. (B&W photographs) Provides cast/production credits for all films released in the U.S. during 1963. Front jacket panel illustrations: Albert Finney, Leslie Caron, Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, Patricia Neal, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor. "Promising Personalities" include Sean Connery, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Walker (Jr.), Elke Sommer, Ursula Andress, Omar Sharif, Peter Fonda; "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" (getting more and more surreal) include Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Emil Jannings. The volume is dedicated to silent screen actress Blanche Sweet. For some unaccountable reason, this is one of the scarcer volumes in this long-running series. .
