Description
23/02/1903. This is one of the highest level presidential appointments we have ever carriedHenry Martyn Hoyt Jr. became assistant attorney general in 1897, and was then appointed solicitor general of the United States by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903. This is one of the highest ranking appointments below the cabinet level that a president can make. Hoyt served in that post from 1903 to 1909. After the end of Roosevelt's term in office Hoyt became a counselor to Taft’s Secretary of State Philander Knox. The solicitor general is appointed by the president and reports directly to the attorney general. He represents the federal government in cases before the Supreme Court. The solicitor general's office argues on behalf of the federal government in almost every Supreme Court case in which the United States is a party and also represents in most cases in which the government has filed a brief as amicus curiae. In the U.S. court of appeals, the solicitor general's office reviews cases decided against the United States and determines whether the government will seek review in the Supreme Court. The solicitor general's office also reviews cases decided against the United States in the district courts and decides whether the government will file an appeal.Document signed by Theodore Roosevelt as president, Washington, February 23, 1903, being Hoyt’s original appointment as solicitor general. The appointment is effective on February 25, 1903, and comes with “all the powers, privileges and emoluments” of the office. The document states on behalf of TR that “I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him Solicitor General…” It is countersigned by the then Attorney General Philander Knox, and the red seal is still present. This is one of the highest level presidential appointments we have ever carried. It was acquired from the direct descendants of the appointee, not known to have survived and offered for sale here for the first time.

Description
London: Jones and Co. and J.J. Marks, 1821. High and Low Life in Dublin ALKEN, Henry, illustrator. [EGAN, Pierce, imitation of]. Real Life in Ireland; or, The Day and Night Scenes, Rovings, Rambles, and Sprees, Bulls, Blunders, Bodderation and Blarney, of Brian Boru, Esq., and his elegant friend Sir Shawn O'Dogherty. Exhibiting a Real Picture of Characters, Manners, &c. in High and Low Life, in Dublin and Various Parts of Ireland. Embellished with Humorous Coloured Engravings, From Original Designs by the most eminent Artists. By a Real Paddy. London: Jones and Co. and J.J. Marks, 1821. First edition. Tall octavo (8 3/4 x 5 11/16 in; 226 x 142 mm). vii, [1, blank], 6-296 pp. Frontispiece and eighteen hand-colored plates by and after William Heath, Henry Alken, and others (all bound together before text). Original quarter green cloth over blue paper boards with printed spine label, rebacked with original backstrip laid down. Some rubbing and light soiling to boards, spine label a little chipped, some soiling to plate margins not affecting image. A very good copy of a scarcely seen book. "Though not so good it is more rare than [Egan's] Life in London" (Tooley). "Real Life in Ireland was initially shunned by educated readers and even a quick glance at the language and misdeeds of the central characters, Brian Boru and Sir Shawn O'Doherty, reveal that such a publication may once have been able to cause and give offence. However, Real Life in Ireland is more akin to the works of Flann O'Brien and although written nearly 200 years ago is very readable and very funny. "Opening with the discharge of Shawn O'Dogherty from college in Dublin with a small fortune to spend, he is joined from the country by his friend Brian Boru, who along the way is regaled by the stories of Peg O'Shambles, a one-time cockle picker from Ringsend in Dublin, who has fallen on hard times due to her alcoholic husband's misdeeds. Accompanied by many humorous cartoons of Brian Boru's adventures, the characters travel from Belfast to make merry in Dublin. While the characters in Real Life in Ireland might be fictitious the places, events and the Hiberno-Irish featured throughout are not. Although a comparison with James Joyce's travels through Dublin is perhaps hardly appropriate, Real Life in Ireland provides a clear account of Dublin and its inhabitants, as well as the major sights and attractions of its suburbs. Perhaps unintentionally, Real Life in Ireland has left an account of the 'real' trials and tribulations of Ireland in the 1820s. For example, the new harbour at Dalkey is rightly criticised as a waste of money and time the long awaited visit of George IV lamented, but not much regretted." "All-in-all...Real Life in Ireland make[s] for a highly entertaining and extremely funny read and has much to recommend it to a modern readership that might be unfamiliar with its kind" (Eneclann). Abbey, Life 282. Tooley 201.

Matching library cloth, with gilt-lettered morocco spine labels [some chipping], old institutional rubberstamps on title leaf, scattered spotting, Good+. These are the first editions of Greenleaf's printing of the Laws. The third volume, which issued in 1797, prints only the laws of the sixteenth through the twentieth sessions. The long list of Subscribers printed in the second volume includes the great men of the times: Aaron Burr, George and De Witt Clinton, several Livingstons, Elias Hicks, and a host of other attorneys. Greenleaf reprinted all three volumes together in 1798. Greenleaf's Preface explains that he had been "engaged to publish a cheap Edition of the Revised Laws". A 1789 folio edition, published by Hugh Gaine, had been too expensive for most people. Volume I, which "contains all the Laws to the eleventh Session, [has] one Session more than is comprised in the first Volume of Gaine's Edition." He emphasizes that "The Types and Paper were manufactured in this State...The Types are not so perfectly Regular as those from the London Foundaries, which have been improving for Centuries-- but, no Cash went to London for them-- and our infant Manufactures ought to be encouraged, that they also may improve." Evans 24602, 32555. NAIP w033259, w016519.

Description
Paris: Felix Alcan, 1901. FIRST EDITION. With numerous text illustrations. Contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards, a bit worn; interior good. Ownership signature dated 1932 on the half-title. First edition, a significant contribution to the understanding of Leibniz’s philosophy. Along with Bertrand Russell’s A critical exposition of the philosophy of Leibniz, which appeared a year earlier, these two books did more to further the acceptance of the importance of logic in Leibniz’s philosophy. “Although their accounts differ, Russell and Couturat both give prominence to Leibniz’s explanation of the principle of sufficient reason in terms of a more basic notion of propositional truth, articulated in the principle that in every true proposition, necessary or contingent, the concept of the predicate is contained in the concept of the subject. From this theory of truth, they argue, follow the most distinctive claims of Leibniz’s metaphysics, including the principle of the identity of indiscernibles, the complete concept theory of substance, and the theory of preestablished harmony” (Rutherford). Couturat (1868-1914) was a French philosopher and mathematician. He lectured in philosophy and the philosophy of mathematics in Toulouse and at the University of Caen in Normandy before studying Leibniz while at Hannover, where he apparently had access to Leibniz’s unpublished works at the Royal Library. Couturat’s book remains unsurpassed as a survey of the full range of Leibniz’s work in logic and the philosophy of logic, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of mathematics.

Good in Fair dj
Description
New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Good in Fair dj. (c.1934). First Edition. Hardcover. [worn but intact copy, apparently an ex-rental library book (although marked as such only by the rubber-stamped name "James Pharmacy" on both endpapers); the jacket shows quite a bit of wear (creasing, soiling, etc.), and has a chip at the top of the front panel and another (patched crudely with white paper) at the lower right corner; in addition, the jacket has been reinforced with tape along the top and bottom edges; oh, and the front flap is also firmly affixed to the front pastedown, which unfortunately makes it impossible to put a mylar protector on the jacket]. This "up-to-the-minute romance [is] fresh, impudent and filled with pungent commentary on the ways and manners of 'today's rather complex series of younger generations.'" More specifically, it deals with a couple of orphaned sisters who are taken in by an aunt who is "pretty set in her Victorian way"; most of the plot revolves around the efforts of the older sister to prevent her rash younger sibling (the Betty of the title) from getting involved with the wrong sort of men. The author was a poet as well as a prolific writer of fiction for both adults and children; she lectured at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont and at the University of Colorado Writers' Conference, delivered a series or radio talks in 1936 about writing (which were then compiled into a book), and starting in 1947 was in charge of fiction at the Chautauqua Writers' Conference. (The jacket illustration, by the way, is "courtesy of Harper's Bazaar.") Rather surprisingly, although she cranked out several dozen novels (mostly during the 1920s and 1930s), only a few of her very early works were adapted for the movies, all of them prior to 1920. .

Description
New York: Vintage Books / Penguin Random House LLC, 2017. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Fine. 5x0x7. Reprint. Brand new from publisher. An exceptional copy. 2017 Trade Paperback. xix, 311 pp. The Handmaid's Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population. The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. In condensed but eloquent prose, by turns cool-eyed, tender, despairing, passionate, and wry, she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment's calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried to their logical conclusions. The Handmaid's Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and a tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best.
