Description
Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong quarto. String-tied decorated papercovered boards. Moderate edgewear on the boards, a few of the pages clipped, very good or better. A scrapbook kept by Howard F. Mosher while a student in Mrs. Compton's Literature II class at the New Paltz Extension in Ellenville, New York. A surprisingly interesting album. Apparently Mosher had access to publicity photographs of authors, and they often accompany his collection of newspaper clippings, pasted in dust jacket parts, and his own typed text. Included are 16 mostly larger size gelatin silver images, the first of which is a Berenice Abbott portrait of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Other author's represented by a photograph include Eugene O'Neill, Gladys Hasty Carroll, Pearl S. Buck, Warwick Deeping, Richard Halliburton, Joseph Hergesheimer, Rebecca West, Hilaire Belloc, Vicki Baum, Helen Ashton, Johan Bojer, Louis Bromfield, Anne Green, R.H. Bruce Lockhart, and a large (7.5" x 9") portrait of play anthologist Burns Mantle that has been Signed by Mantle. Combined with hundreds of clippings about recently published books, both fiction and non-fiction, he scrapbook makes for a surprisingly lively assemblage. An interesting insight into what a literate young man was reading and interested in.
