Its author was characterized by the Dupuys' Encyclopaedia of Military History as the successor to Machiavelli. de la Noue, a Huguenot, was the principal Protestant leader in the early French Wars of Religion. All of his writing was undertaken as a prisoner of war. This is his most important work on strategy. The 22nd discourse is of considerable interest because of the author's suggestions of the settlement of disputes and differences without the resort to war. See Henri Hauser's 1892 book on the author and his work. Brunet III, 824; see Cockle #37 for an informative note to accompany the entry on the English edition of 1587.
