Description
Scroll on paper (340 x 15,130 mm.), silk brocade outer endpaper at beginning, wooden core roller. [Kyoto]: late Edo copy. The Aoi Matsuri is one of the three most famous annual festivals in Kyoto; it now takes place on 15 of May each year and is held by the important Kamo shrines, the Kamigamo Shrine and Shimogamo Shrine. The festival’s origins can be traced to rites performed in the sixth century to appease the gods and to pray for bountiful harvests. It became a more formal annual ritual in the eighth century (Heian era), when Kyoto became the capital and Emperor Kanmu (735-806) recognized the importance of the Kamo shrines to the city’s prosperity. The procession starts at the southern gate of the Imperial Palace and makes it way towards the Shimogamo Shrine and finally arrives at the Kamigano Shrine, about eight kilometers away, where shrine rites are performed. The procession participants include the Saiodai (a young woman of the imperial house who has undergone several purification ceremonies), the Imperial Messenger, who leads the procession, Buddhist priests and nuns, dancers, musicians carrying ceremonial instruments, young girls, royal guards in red uniforms carrying bows and arrows, government and civic officials (oftentimes on horseback), and military retainers. The illustrations are large and panoramic, depicting carriages drawn by oxen, attendants of many ranks and professions, each wearing different attire and carrying swords, bows and arrows, musical instruments, etc. There are several breeds of oxen and different types of carriages. One of the carriages is labeled “ingokogi” [“carriage for the retired emperor”]. Street scenes show bystanders, structures decorated with hollyhock vines, and processioners carrying hollyhock sprigs. One highly decorated carriage, with wisteria vines draped from its top, transports an assortment of musical instruments. A musician follows, carrying a koto (vertical harp). A group of dancers, all on horseback, are part of the procession. There is also a scene of three high-ranking court members, all seated, whose first names are Hisayori, Yorizumi, and Hisaaki. The coloring of this scroll appears to be a preliminary version; while it is for the most part well colored, there are neat notes by the artist for the application of further colors. The text, in three sections, provides a history of the festival from earliest times and descriptions of the illustrations that follow in the scroll. Many figures are labeled with their tasks or roles in the procession. At the end of the scroll, we find a note stating that the text and illustrations were copied in “mid-June 1330” by “jushii Takakane Tamenobu kyo” (illustrator) and “Nyudo [several characters indecipherable] Suekuni,” who was responsible for the text. Our scroll is a late Edo copy. In excellent and fresh condition, preserved in a handsome lacquer box with a metal handle.

Description
Eight vols. 8vo, later wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching, heads & tails of spines covered in blue silk (a few worn). [China]: Preface dated 1758. A commentary, nominally by the Qianlong emperor (1711-99, reigned 1735-96), of the Spring and Autumn Annals, one of the Confucian classics. The commentary rejects a previously current interpretation of the Annals in favor of a reading favorable to the Manchu monarchy. The Spring and Autumn Annals is a very terse and apparently entirely documentary account of events involving the state of Lu in Chinese antiquity. It covers the period 722-481 BCE. The importance of the text in the Chinese intellectual tradition stems from its association with Confucius, who was from Lu (in present-day Shandong) and was said to have written the chronicle. Several commentaries were written to the chronicle or associated with it, and later scholars produced their own editions that used these commentaries selectively. One such version was authored by Hu Anguo (1074-1138 CE). Written in the Song period, when China was in a losing conflict with Inner Asian states on its northern border, Hu’s commentary stressed the irreconcilability between Chinese civilization and the “barbarians” surrounding it. The two had been kept separate in the period covered by the Annals, according to Hu, but they had since “mingled to the detriment of both” (Elman, Classicism, Politics, and Kinship, 153). The Song empire eventually lost its northern half to the Jurchen, one of the neighboring non-Chinese peoples. The remaining southern rump-state fell to the Mongols in 1279. The Qing empire of the Qianlong emperor was ruled by Manchus. They were descendants of the Jurchen, and their empire relied to a large extent on collaboration with the Mongols. Yet the Qing empire also presented itself as a Confucian polity. As one of the Confucian classics, the Annals remained a highly charged text, as was Hu Anguo's commentary to it. The mid-Qing emperors sought to strengthen the court’s prerogative to interpret the classics, and by the 1770s, 19 imperial editions of the various classics had been produced at court (Huang, “Shilun Siku tiao dui Qing qianqi guanfang jingxue de jiedu yu pipan,” 1). The discourse surrounding China and its neighbors was sensitive in the period, and it evolved over time, as the Qing state sought supremacy in Inner Asia. That goal appeared close to being attained toward the end of the 1750s, when the Direct Explanations to the “Spring and Autumn Annals,” Compiled by the Emperor, was published. In the book, the Qianlong emperor — ostensibly to get closer to the original text by removing later, erroneous layers of commentary — departed from Hu Anguo’s interpretation to introduce his own, or one produced in collaboration with his officials. Not only did Qianlong reject Hu Anguo’s xenophobic discourse, he also replaced Hu’s Neo-Confucian identification of “Heaven” (tian), as a universal “principle” (li) underlying all things, with a reading in which “Heaven” was coterminous, rather, with the “king” (wang) (Qin “Qianlong shiqi kekao feichu Hu Anguo Chunqiu zhuan yuanyin zaixi,” 300). A reflection of the confidence of the Qing empire at the height of its power, this reading elevated the monarchy and made its actions more difficult to criticize. The imperial preface is printed in the calligraphy of Yu Minzhong 于敏中 (1714-79), a highly placed Chinese civil official. Several pages carry a seal on which the first three characters are Longmen xian 龍門縣, the name of a county in the metropolitan district that surrounded Beijing in the Qing period (we have been unable to read the remaining characters). A reader has added punctuation in black ink. A fine set, preserved in a hantao. A few natural paper flaws to the text. References Elman, Benjamin A. Description
n.p., 1619. Early 17th-century account ledger of Giulio Cesare and Luco Spinola, two brothers of the Genoese patrician family, recording debts and credits over a period beginning in 1619 and ending in 1631. Information about individual debts is registered at the top of each page, with ample blank space underneath for successive transactions relating to the debt. Other pages are filled with tables recording transactions in a given period of time pertaining to different debtors and creditors. Although the book was evidently begun in 1619, some of the entries record transactions dating back to 1599. The entries are written in a single neat hand which only occasionally turns into a hasty scrawl. Six loose leaves inserted into the pages contain records of transactions from 1599 to 1630. The brothers were evidently responsible for the finances of their mother, Lamilla, whose name appears frequently, as well as their sisters. One of them, Luiggia, born Livia, was in a convent, while the other, Benedetta, had her dowry managed by her brother until her marriage to her cousin, Paris Salvago. Reflecting the Spinola family’s twin spheres of influence in Genoa and Naples, both places appear in the transactions, with somewhat more mentions of Naples—probably an indication of the focus of Giulio Cesare and Luco’s business interests, and a plausible explanation for why their accounting ledger should be bound in such a splendid Spanish-Neapolitan binding.. Folio manuscript, [25 x 35 cm], consisting of 119 numbered leaves and (70) blank leaves; (6) loose folded leaves. Contemporary black morocco wallet binding, most likely Neapolitan (or Spanish), elaborately and densely tooled, with original morocco reinforcements with decorative red stitching on lower edge (i.e., spine); some minor worming and abrasion. Vellum title shows minor soiling, and so do extremities of scattered leaves, but generally in an excellent state of preservation.

Description
London: Printed by T. Bensley & Son for Robert Triphook, 1816. First edition. Limited edition, one of 250 copies for subscribers. Full red crushed morocco with gilt to spine and boards. Five raised bands. Dentelles gilt. Top edge brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Robert Hoe III (1839-1909) to front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Mary Macmillin Norton below. Collating complete including subscribers' list, eleven engraved and eight colored woodcuts and two additional colored plates: xvi, [2], 373, [3]. A beautiful copy with just a hint of rubbing to the corners. Occasional faint offsetting, but in all internally fresh and bright. With provenance from the library of American businessman and printing press equipment producer Robert Hoe III, whose library was a unique and valuable resource in the history of printing and typography. His collection went to auction in 1912, likely where it was acquired by Ms. Norton. Samuel Weller Singer was a noted scholar of Elizabethan literature and history, but he is best remembered for this pioneering treatise on card games. Researches into the History of Playing Cards is an investigation not only of the history of playing cards but a sourcebook of sumptuous illustrations detailing the evolution of playing cards as works of art. Singer's erudition is on display in the book's footnotes where he traces the etymological and historical nuances of cards and card games in other languages in the book's first section. The second section offers a history of printing, as Singer shrewdly considers the rise of printed and engraved playing cards as part and parcel with developments in printing and printmaking. The final section is an instruction manual on card games. Sumptuously illustrated with engravings and woodcuts, Researches into the History of Playing Cards is a celebration of the history of cards and print making.

Description
19/11/1892. Letter signed, on black bordered Executive Mansion stationery as his first wife, Caroline Scott Harrison, had died less than a month before, three pages, November 19, 1892, to Cornelius Bliss concerning the appointment of a friend of Bliss as Ambassador to Portugal. Bliss was a seasoned politico who would be Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign manager in 1904.“I have your letter of the 16th and notice what you say about Mr. Einstein. I knew of course he took the race for Mayor only to help the general ticket and without thought of success himself. I fear that, as to the Portuguese Mission, some arrangements have been made with the Secretary of State, with my concurrence, that will make that impossible to give that to Mr. Einstein and I do not know what else there may be. You know I have only broken bits of meat and very little even of that. “Mr. Lispenard Stewart, General Butterfield, Mr. Webb and two or three other prominent people in your state have been urged by friends for foreign appointments since the election. I have only Switzerland that is not either disposed of or so complicated as not to be free. The best thing I think is to say nothing to Mr. Einstein about it and let me see what I can do. I know that you will appreciate my good disposition and also the limitations that are upon me.” Like many outgoing presidents Harrison wanted to reward friends with last minute appointments when possible. He was to leave office less than four months later.Cornelius Bliss was, in addition to TR’s campaign manager, the Chairman of the New York State Republican committee who was instrumental in Harrison’s carrying that state in 1888. He was later Secretary of the Interior under McKinley. Edwin Einstein was a Representative in the 46th U.S. Congress and did indeed run unsuccessfully for Mayor of New York in 1892.

Description
Paris: Victor Masson and Son, 1866. FIRST EDITION. Original wrappers bound in morocco-backed boards. Some very light dampstaining and foxing. First edition of the first history of medical jurisprudence of insanity. The author begins his study with the ancient Romans and biblical figures, asserting that they often conflated mental illness with supernaturalism and divine power and thus, the mentally ill were not often prosecuted. He goes on to describe the medieval and early modern era, when mentally ill people were accused of witchcraft and sorcery and frequently tortured and executed. The medico-legal state at the time of his writing, Morel claims, is sympathetic with the advancement of psychiatry and medical understanding of mental illness, with particular attention paid to cases in the United States. Finally, he lays out his recommendations for establishing innocence and culpability of those legally considered insane. This volume is stated as the first fascicle of a 6-part forthcoming series, with instructions to subscribe for the next part. However, no further volumes were ever published. OCLC locates 4 copies in the U.S. (Penn, UCLA, Harvard, NLM). Semelaigne, Les Pionniers de la psychiatrie française I : 351 ; Wharton, Mental Unsoundness 469.

Description
New York: Accurate Steel Rule Die Manufacturers, 1949. First Edition. Wraps. Stapled. Envelope. Fine. A most unusual shaped-book, die cut trade promotion, most appropriate in this instance as the company is promoting its own business of making die cuts for the printing trade. In other words, the company was the maker of die cuts to be used by other printers, as opposed to being a printer using die cuts. Of further interest is that the promotion is a pattern book and primer on the die cut process, clearly intended to fuel enthusiasm for using die cuts for all kinds of business advertising and promotion, and critically, to get printers to expose their customers to its possibilities. The shape is a barrel, which plays nicely on the title, "A Barrel Full", the title itself quite possibly chosen because the printer wanted to use the image of a barrel, which is large-ish and its size too setting this apart from more ordinary promotions. The size is, using the maximum length and width, 38.5 by 29.5 cm. 24 pp., including front and rear of wraps. The booklet abounds with small black and white vignettes of a wide range of consumer products, as well as other objects, animals and people that might be used in advertising, perhaps because of a company's name, or alternatively, some association in the promotion with a characteristic of say, the animal. (Think elephant when the word "jumbo" is part of the promotion, as just one example.) Most of the space on a page, though, is given to outlines to be used in constructing a die cut. These include geometric shapes that have nothing to do with a particular subject but might be a desired shape for a background board, to give just one of many possibilities. And things such as display boxes are among the patterns, and these patterns aren't the least bit decorative in and of themselves. The company, Accurate Steel Rule Die Manufacturers, was in business from about 1930 or '31, based on its representation of having been in business 18 years in this brochure, and remained in business at least until the 1980s. It issued catalogues later than this one, but none of the others of which we are aware were themselves die cut, nor were they the folio size of this one. Scarce, with a single copy recorded on OCLC First Search, located at Harvard, and no indication this copy comes with mailing envelope and letter. Printed onto the mailing envelope, in large lettering, is the question, "How to Become The Most Successful Printer in Your Community (Sent at Your Request). This informs us that among Accurate Steel Rule's client base were other printers. In a sense it had a wholesale business, that being the case. The parenthetical is suggestive, too, that this brochure was perceived as something more than merely a company's promotional puffery. The cover letter is housed in a pocket, which is itself an envelope mounted onto the lower long edge of the shipping envelope. It is undated and signed by a company officer whose title is not given. The envelope has light soiling, much of which could be erased if one wished to make the effort. Otherwise, an outstandingly well-preserved piece of unusual printing ephemera.

Kentish New Town, 1861. Rowland, Owen. Autograph letter signed to Latimer Clark (1822-98). Kentish New Town, 5 August 1861. 4pp. 179 x 113 mm. Traces of former mounting, 2 holes punched in upper margin (not affecting text), but very good. To telegraph engineer Latimer Clark, involved in the development and construction of submarine cables, including the Atlantic Cable. Rowland worked with Clark on developing insulation materials for submarine cables. In this letter Rowland discusses an antimony alloy he had created for coating iron and steel plates for ships, with a possible hint of its application to telegraphy: "Captn. Galton is very much pleased with the appearance of the metallic alloy and thinks that it will prove to be a very valuable process . . . I really believe that if a patent were taken out for coating iron or steel plates for ships it would stand good . . . I should vary the proportions of metal for such purposes but not for coating wires. Upon wires it must be pliable . . . Copper takes a beautiful coating. Would it affect India Rubber? I believe not." .

Description
London: Macmillan & Co., 1883 First edition, first printing. Personal copy of mountaineer George Lowe, with his bookplate adhered to the front verso of the front free endpaper. Inscribed by Lowe on the half-title: "W.G. Lowe / 1950." Publisher's red cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, ruled in black, black coated endpapers. Good ex-library (NZ) copy, with a large library label to the front board, remnants of a former owner's plate over the library plate to the front board, light wear to the extremities, some toning to the spine, a hint of soiling to the boards, spine cracked and holding inside the covers, otherwise sturdy spine, former owner's inscriptions to the half-title, title page, and page ix, otherwise bright and clean pages. Overall, a presentable copy, signed by Lowe prior to the infamous 1953 Mount Everest Expedition. The High Alps of New Zealand is Irish mountaineer William Spotswood Green's account of his climbing expedition in the Southern Alps and, specifically, his attempt to climb Mount Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand. Although he was ultimately unsuccessful, Green came within sixty meters of the summit and remained the highest point achieved on Mt. Cook until its first ascension in 1894. In addition to his account of the Southern Alps, Green touches on his Australian climbs, and provides appendices for both novice and experienced climbers.. Signed. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Good.
