Description
London: Printed for A.R. near Temple-Bar, 1693. First edition. [iv], 30 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Nineteenth-century Dutch combed marbled boards with maroon roan spine titled in gilt. Binding rubbed, internally clean. Very good. First edition. [iv], 30 pp. 1 vols. 4to. "every Man's handsome that goes to be hang'd" Stirring account of the life and crimes and amorous exploits of Capt. Whitney, who began stealing deer while a young butcher's apprentice, soon progressed to robbery. When he encounters an Irish mercenary on the road to London and bids him, "Stand and Deliver ... Your Purse, you Dog", his victim launches into a tale of woe, a desperate and futile attempt to hold onto the 20 guineas in his purse. Whitney's undoing begins in an exchange with the spirited wife of a man, "so Cow-hearted, in so tame a submission", whom Whitney has robbed. He makes an assignation with her, and she deserts her husband, and they run off. "But as Men of his cautious Profession generally make their Residence, like Tartar Camps, not long in one place, but always in motion, he danced her about from one quarter of the Town to another." After they settle in Hounds-Ditch, Whitney is sold out by a landlord with his eye on the £40 bounty, and in his flight he turns into a dead end: "put into a Coach, he was ushered in great Ceremony (especially if Crowds and Noise be any part of State) to Newgate". Description
1780. First Edition. CHALMERS, George. Political Annals of the Present United Colonies, from their Settlement to the Peace of 1763: Compiled chiefly from Records, and authorized often by the Insertion of State-Papers. London: Printed for the Author: And sold by J. Bowen, 1780. Tall quarto (9-/12 by 11-1/2 inches), period-style fiull mottled calf gilt, red morocco spine label. $4200.First edition of Chalmers' landmark work, published during the Revolution, on British constitutional history and its impact on the American colonies, preceding ""the first published 'American' effort at a full history of the Revolution"" (Boorstin), with John Adams, as Vice President, calling its British author ""a very bitter Tory… of the scornful fastidious temper of his nation."" Yet despite Chalmers' claim that ""American colonies had always had a subversive desire for independence and that parliament had the right to tax the colonies without their consent” (ODNB), his Annals proved vital to America's early historians—""valuable for the distinctness of its details, the authenticity of its documents, and the elegant manner in which it is written"" (Sabin).Chalmers, a dedicated Loyalist, arrived in America in the 1760s. Amidst fury over British rule, the British lawyer carried pistols to protect against threats and returned home in 1775. ""In 1780 he published his Annals, in which he insisted that the American colonies had always had a subversive desire for independence and that parliament had the right to tax the colonies without their consent"" (ODNB). Yet Annals—""valuable for the distinctness of its details, the authenticity of its documents, and the elegant manner in which it is written"" (Sabin)—soon became a chief source for colonial history in America, preceding the ""first published 'American' effort at a full history of the Revolution."" Despite Chalmers' disdain for ""miserable provincials… [who] always think with detestation of their superiors,"" he cited ""weaknesses of British imperial policy, the long New England struggle for independence, and the importance of testing American Revolutionary claims by the evidence of recent British constitutional history"" (Boorstin, Americans, 367-8). Chalmers' Annals was essential to American historians such as Jeremy Belknap when ""the surge of ardent nationalism that swept across the new United States after the close of the Revolution made the study of American history a matter of vital interest."" At the time fundamental documents ""were scattered, incomplete, occasionally lost and woefully disorganized"" (Nye, George Bancroft, 141-42). In 1789 when Belknap, founder of the Massachusetts Historical Society, ""was deep into writing the second volume of his History of New Hampshire, a sprawling trilogy [1784, 1791, 1792]… he felt thwarted by a lack of access to key documents… [and] asked Vice President John Adams for some help"" (Massachusetts Historical Society). In a July 18, 1789 letter to Adams, Belknap wrote: ""Not till this Week have I met with the political annals [sic] of George Chalmers printed in London 1780… From what little I have as yet had Opportunity to read of the work, I conceive the author to have the spirit of indefatigable enquiry which is necessary in a historian… The reason of my mentioning him to you is to introduce an enquiry whether you know the Man… When I observe his having had access to the papers in the Plantation Office, I feel a regret that an Ocean seperates [sic] me from such a grand repository—how necessary to form a just judgment of the secret springs of many American transactions!"" (Founders Online). ""Despite Adams' duties presiding over the Senate in the first session of the federal Congress, he prioritized Belknap's query, firing off a reply on 24 July"" (Massachusetts Historical Society). There Adams wrote: ""George Chalmers I have seen in London… He has much of the scornful, fastidious temper of his nation; has been a very bitter Tory."" Adams went on to observe that Britain's defeat is ""now ranking in the hearts and tingling in the veins of the English nation"" (Belknap Papers, 437-38). Chalmers had planned another volume to prove ""the colonies were in the wrong; but, soon after the volume was printed, the capitulation at Yorktown afforded a more convincing proof that, right or wrong, they had succeeded"" (Preface, History of the Revolt). While ESTC N66484 references a 1779 London edition, it is most probably a ghost entry. Sabin, Howes, and Adams cite only the 1780 edition; no 1779 edition has ever appeared in auction records. ESTC T149593. Howes C266. Adams, 80-18. Sabin 1176. Small stray ink line to one page.Text with a few dozen pages expertly cleaned. Beautifully bound.

Description
3 volumes; xxviii+862 pages with two fold out plates and numerous illustrations; xxxvi+1107 pages with numerous illustrations; xxx+729 pages with four maps including frontispiece, 43 plates which one folds out and numerous black and white illustrations. Royal octavo (9 7/8" x 6 3/4"). Bound in half leather with marbled boards. Three of five volumes. First edition. A few general observations on the contents of Gesammelte Abhandlungen are in order. Altogether, the set includes 127 separate articles. Most were originally published in such well-known outlets of the 1887-1919 period as ZeitschriJt jilr Ethnologie, Globus, Science, Internationales Archiv filr Ethnographie, Ethnologisches Notisblatt, Mittheilungen der Anthropologischen Gesellschajt in Wien, Verojentlichungen aus dem Kdniglichen Museum filr Volkerkunde (Berlin), and the proceedings of the various International Congresses of Americanists held during these years. Occasionally these articles, on being reprinted in the various volumes of Gesammelte Abhundlungen, were substantially enlarged and revised by their author. A few of the most important papers were written especially for these volumes, such as his well-known translations (with copious notes) of the Sahaguntine chants to the gods (Vol. I), his classic account of Tarascan culture at Contact (Vol. III), and his important descriptions of the ruins of La Quemada (Vol. III) and Teotihuacan (Vol. V). Breaking them down into categories, to illustrate again the great breadth of Seler's scholarly labors, approximately 10 are devoted to studies of the Mexican codices, 3 to Mexican calendrics, 20 to Maya hieroglyphic writing and calendrics, 3 to mythology, 2 to general Mesoamerican linguistics, 29 to analyses of archaeological objects or groups of objects, 13 to descriptions (always well illustrated) of major ruins, 6 to accounts of archaeological travels, 14 to what might be called "general ethnohistory," 4 to direct translations of Nahuatl texts, 3 to recent ethnography, 3 to Conquest history, I to geography, and 4 on miscellaneous topics. In addition to this coverage of Mesoamerican matters, which consumes the vast bulk of the volumes, 4 articles deal with North America, 3 with Central America, and 5 with South America (Andean region). The small number of articles specifically concerned with Mexican codices does not accurately reflect Seler's contribution to this field, since, as stated above, his major works here were long monographs, each thoroughly analyzing a major surviving specimen. (American Anthropologist Volume 65: p1100)Seler was born in Crossen an der Oder, Prussia, on December 5, 1849; attended Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium, Berlin, 1863-1869; attended University of Breslau before serving a year of military duty in 1870-71 during the Franco-Prussian War; returned to his studies at University of Berlin in 1871 and passed his Oberlehrer examination in 1875; taught science and mathematics until he was forced to resign because of poor health in 1879; moved to Trieste and began studying linguistics, and his interest in Pre-Columbian ethnography and archeology emerged; received his doctorate, University of Leipzig, 1887; director, American Division, Königlichen Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin, 1904-22; his published papers and monographs made fundamental contributions to studies of aboriginal American linguistics, archaeology, native history, and ethnography; died in 1922. Condition:Corners bumped and rubbed, bookplate on front pastedowns, spines lightly rubbed. A very good set.

LUTHER BURBANK (1849-1926). Burbank was an American botanist and horticulturalist who created more than 800 varieties of plants in his career.TLS. 1pg. March 25, 1913. Santa Rosa, California. A typed letter signed Luther Burbank on his personalized letterhead. Burbank wrote about his writing projects and the recent loss of his cat. Dear Mrs. Ward: Thank you for note, card and picture of you and your pet. You look very happy with the little doggie. We just lost a beautiful cat which seemed one of the family. All feel so badly that we can hardly bear to have another pet. It seemed to know everything that we said. I am sure it understood most of our conversation. Have been busy beyond expression in publishing twelve volumes of books, besides my other business and really consider myself as my friends do the busiest man in the world. Perhaps we are mistaken, but I never know of any one who improved his time better. We are looking over the splendid books which you sent me the other day and are having them numbered with the other books in my library and thought you would like to see one of the bookplates which I used, so inclose [sic] one. Faithfully yours, Luther Burbank. There is a handwritten note in pencil on the verso, seemingly by the recipient. In very good condition.

Description
1920. Commercial truck photo archive documenting motorized industrial transport in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, when businesses increasingly replaced horse-drawn delivery and rail-dependent local hauling with branded gasoline-powered fleets. The archive records commercial vehicles serving construction suppliers, rubber companies, bakeries, grocers, oil and tire service firms, newspapers, appliance companies, and regional contractors across the East Coast and Midwest. These trucks made modern urban and industrial labor faster, more mobile, and more visible, carrying company names through city streets while linking factories, job sites, warehouses, and consumer markets. Photo archive of 40 large silver gelatin photographs, each 8 x 10 inches, United States, circa 1920s-1930s. Trucks appear posed outside dealerships, factories, quarries, service garages, storefronts, and company buildings, with visible signage for businesses including Quaker Rubber Corporation, Needham's Motor Service, Liebman's, General Electric, Capparrell Construction Co., Charleston Daily Mail, Carter Berkeley Co., and General Tire & Rubber Co. Vehicles include dump trucks, panel delivery trucks, refrigerator service trucks, construction supply trucks, newspaper delivery vehicles, and commercial vans, many with painted company lettering and product advertising. Several images appear staged for catalogue or promotional use, showcasing staged vehicle bodies, dump beds, fleet arrangements, chassis design, cargo capacity, and business-specific customization. The archive shows how trucking became a defining technology of interwar American industry, especially for construction, retail distribution, and service labor that required movement beyond fixed rail lines. By the 1920s and 1930s, commercial fleets allowed contractors to move sand, gravel, tools, and materials directly to expanding roads, suburbs, and building sites, while branded delivery trucks turned transportation into public advertising. The repeated construction and supply vehicles make the archive especially strong for documenting the equipment behind Depression-era and New Deal-period building, roadwork, and urban maintenance. Light handling wear, curling, toning, scattered edge wear, and occasional surface marks. Overall in good condition.
