Osaka 1804, Hanfu Shorin. Stitched yellow stiff wrs.,30 vol. set, 19.7 x 26.5 cm.,title slips,2 indigo-blue folding cloth Chitsu cases, bone clasps, clean covers a few dusty, contents very clean & bright, complete set. RARE FIRST & ONLY EDITION . *** **** *** . . THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE BOTANICAL EVER DONE IN JAPAN . . . THIS IS THE MOST FAMOUS SINGLE & COMPREHENSIVE . . . LOST OF ALL KNOWN JAPANESE PLANTS . . . RESEARCH BEGUN IN 1793, 30 VOLS. PUBLISHED IN 1804 . * This famous, stunning and copiously illustrated work remains one of the most important botanicals ever done in Japan. It is considered the most comprehensive and reliable work on the subject ever done in Japan. Complete in 30 volumes. . * This superb work was initiated in Kansei 5th year [1793] by order of Shimazu Shigehide [1745-1833], the Daimyo of Satsuma, the Feudal Lord [Tycoon]. This area is now Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu. The work was edited by Soh, Han, [aka.: by his "studio" or "go" name: Soh Senshun 1758-1834]. . Lord of Shimazu ordered a comprehensive illustrated encyclopedic treatise on agriculture and agricultural botany. The work had an ambitious task, to list every known plant in Japan, with drawings of a large number of examples. The original plan was to print a set of 100 illustrated volumes, however, due to natural disasters: fire, insect infestation a large number of the original woodblocks were destroyed. Replacement wood for additional blocks were scarce, thus the final set was limited to 30 volumes. Nevertheless, this set continues to be the most comprehensive and reliable single resource on the subject from that time. It is a very rare set, seldom found. . *** EDITORS: The work was edited by SOH Han, [a.k.a.: Soh Senshun] [1758-1834]: With assistance of the co-editor, SHIRAO [Kunihashira Saizo] Kokuchu [1762-1821].. . *** DISASTER DURING THE COMPILATION OF THIS WORK: This work was to be the greatest work of botany every published, but was interrupted twice by fire. never progressed beyond the 30 volumes. The work suffered two fires in 1806, and again in 1829. These fires destroyed a great number of the book's woodcut blocks, along with a large number of printed pages stored in a warehouse which burned to the ground. It dealt with agricultural botany, and a few wild food plants. . *** THE SUBJECTS: This lovely set of 30 volumes is profusely illustrated. They show agricultural ceremonies, festivals, planting and tending crops, surveying, irrigation, flood control, farm implements, varieties of rice and various agricultural products. . THE INCLUSION OF SOME FOREIGN GRAINS & CORN: The work is nicely described & illustrated in Bartlett [see below] as exhibit 33. Figure 29 shows four pages from this work. It also included a bizarre and unusual form of American Indian Maize [i.e. corn] from the new world, known in Japan as Mamekibi. It also shows two other foreign grains: Tobiki or T'ang millet, and Namban millet from the land of the Portuguese or "Southern Barbarians." Also Koma-kibi a Korean millet from the old name Koma for Korea. . The corn was fried in a pan to make "pop-corn" an early record of this kind of usage and food. It may even predate the American usage of corn. . *** THE CONTENTS: The contents also deals with the agricultural ceremonies and festivals, planting and tending crops, surveying, irrigation, flood control, farm implements, verities of rice ad various agricultural products. . *** This is the FIRST & ONLY RARE EDITION of this title. . *** CONDITION: The set is uniformly bound in stiff yellow stitched wrappers. The first volume covers are dusty front & back; vol.2 & 11 have some stains on the front covers, back covers clean. Vol.8 a bit of stain & spots to lower front cover, back cover clean. Else all other volumes are exceptionally clean both front and back covers. . The contents are bright and clean, no worming or other issues. Registry and impression very good. By and large a very nice set ! . *** ALTERNATE PUBLISHERS: These are the alternate publishers: So-ya Kyubei and Iyo-ya Zenbei in Osaka. . *** Color photos are posted to our website, including two references: "illus08.jpg" to our site taken from from Rudolph and Bartlett, see below for their details. . *** REFERENCE: . Description
Norwich, Vermont: Elysium Press, 1995. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. One of 200 copies, octavo size, 55 pp., with prospectus and publisher's box. British socialite Stephen James Napier Tennant (1906-1987), known for his idle and decadent lifestyle, was one of the "Bright Young People", a bohemian group of young aristocrats who received much publicity for their lavish parties and overall luxurious way of life. Tennant was a prominent figure in this group and was the inspiration for several fictional characters, including Cedric Hampton in Nancy Mitford's novel "Love in a Cold Climate"; he was also, for several years, a partner of the poet Sigfried Sassoon (1886-1967). These two stories by Tennant were printed by Elysium Press, which began in 1980 and often prints writings that are out of print or out of fashion, with a focus on the works of gay writers which "ha[ve] been neglected or overlooked by the commercial trade" (per the Elysium Press website). Over the course of nearly forty years, Tennant worked on the novel "Lascar", producing copious amounts of unpublished material; the two stories in this volume represent his rich writing style, largely unread and unknown by the public. The volume is housed in the publisher's box with a pattern matching that of the binding, with the prospectus, which features one of the colour illustrations by Tennant found in the book. Scarce in the marketplace, we find no other copies online as of this writing; our search of OCLC located fifteen copies with institutions. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter purple cloth with dark blue boards featuring an all-over pattern of stars, dark blue lettering and ornament on the spine, fore-edge rought cut, title page with green border of stars and purple lettering, monochrome photograph of Stephen Tennant by Cecil Beaton on the verso of the title page, text printed in brown, green, and purple, seven full-page colour illustrations by Tennant throughout, line drawings in brown by Tennant throughout; Cochin type, Zerkall paper, octavo size (9.5" by 7.5"), pagination: [4] [i] ii-iii [iv-vi] [1] 2-41 [42-44] [1 colophon], one of 200 copies, this copy out of series (unnumbered). With prospectus, one sheet printed in blue, with a duplicate of the illustration facing page 9 on the verso. Housed in the publisher's box, covered in blue paper with the same star pattern as the boards, white paper label with black decorative border and lettering on the front. ___CONDITION: A fine copy, the covers clean, the corners straight, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light rubbing to the corners, else fine. The prospectus is fine, clean and without wear. The publisher's box is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean but for a few specks on the rear board, without wear but for light rubbing on the bottom edge and corners of the front board. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. 2008. ISBN-13: 9781584777038; ISBN-10: 1584777036. A Notable Justice of the Taney Court Woodbury, Levi [Nahum Capen, Editor]. Writings of Levi Woodbury, LL.D.: Political, Judicial and Literary. Now First Selected and Arranged. Originally published: Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1852. Three vols. Two portrait frontispieces. xiv, 640; vi, 436; vi, 449 pp. Reprinted 2008 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584777038. ISBN-10: 1584777036. Hardcover. New. $100. * These three volumes collect most of the political, judicial and literary writings of Levi Woodbury [1789-1851], an important New Hampshire jurist and statesman. Appointed by President Polk to fill the vacancy created by the death of Joseph Story, he was an associate justice in the Taney Court from 1846 to his death in 1851. He usually sided with the majority during his tenure, but his strong sympathy for states' rights provoked occasional dissents. He was generally proslavery, and usually supported the majority's decisions on the contract clause. Although his influence was minimized by his brief tenure, he was admired for his acute legal mind and sound reasoning. This reissue of his writings gives us a fine opportunity to reevaluate the assessment of his peers and enrich our understanding of the Taney Court.
