Description
Paris: Chez Aubert & Cie. Editeurs, 1848. Les Vésuviennes - The Radical feminist Group as Depicted by Charles Édouard de Beaumont Twenty Superb Hand Colored Lithographs BEAUMONT, [Charles-]É[douard] de. Les Vésuviennes ou les Soldats pour rire... Paris: Chez Aubert & Cie. Editeurs, [1848]. Folio (12 15/16 x 9 3/4 inches; 328 x 247 mm.). Pictorial lithograph title and twenty superb hand-colored lithograph plates, all heightened with gum arabic. Publishers lithographed pale green wrappers, rear wrapper expertly replaced with near identical paper. Original glassine wrapper. An exceptionally fine copy. Housed in a felt-lined half black morocco over gray cloth boards clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt. The twenty superb hand colored lithographs in Les Vésuviannes depict an imagined state of society in which there is great suffering and injustice, in which women take the functions of national guards and policemen. The title is linked to the resumé of a radical feminist group that actually existed following the February revolution which militated the female military service the ability to dress like men, as well as women for the equality in housework. Historically, the first community of Vesuvius was established in Belleville. On March 26, 1848, at the foot of the Vendôme column. A whole legion of young women from 15 to 30 years old passed behind a tricolor banner with the word 'Vésuviennes'. At noon, they went to the city hall, to ask for the help and protection of the provisional government. The Vésuviennes were a radical feminist group that existed in France in the middle of the 19th century. They chose their name (derived from Mount Vesuvius) because, in their words, "Like lava, so long held back, that must at last pour out around us, [our idea of feminist equality] is in no way incendiary but in all ways regenerating." With the overthrow of King Louis-Philippe of France in 1848, the newly formed Republic lifted all restrictions on the press and assembly. This encouraged a proliferation of new feminist publications, organizations, and groups. The Vésuviennes were among the latter. Considered to be the most radical of all of the feminist factions of the time, the Vésuviennes promoted female military service, the right of women to dress the same as men, and legal and domestic equality between husband and wife, even as that extended to the distribution of household chores. Most Vésuviennes were between the ages of 15 and 30, unmarried, poorly paid workers. Even some other feminists disapproved of their tactics, which included wearing culottes (not unlike the bloomers worn by radical American feminists at the time) and staging frequent street demonstrations. The image of a young woman in culottes came to represent all feminists to some, as can be seen in the caricatures of Charles-Édouard de Beaumont, one of several artists who satirized the efforts of feminists of the period in popular political papers such as Le Charivari. Until recently the existence of this feminist organization was regarded as genuine, if poorly documented. Some historians have recently argued that the organization was itself "a burlesque creation of the French police who drew up a constitution for it and provided it with prostitutes as members". (Wikipedia). The Plates: 1. Mâme Coquardeau, j'te défends d'aller au rappel...n'y a pas d'bon sens de me laisser comme ça avec trois enfans sur les bras...et pas de biberon!... Description
France (probably Besançon), 3rd quarter of 15th century. 239 x 165 mm. (9 3/8 x 6 1/2"). Single column, 15 lines in an elegant gothic book hand. Rubrics in dark pink, line-enders in dark pink and blue highlighted with a gilt bezant, several one-line initials and one two-line initial in burnished gold on dark pink and blue ground with white tracery, one three-line initial in pink with white tracery, filled with trefoils painted red or blue, all on a gold ground, verso with panel border of delicate hairline vines terminating in gilt bezants and ivy and with acanthus and flowers, recto with A HALF-PAGE MINIATURE OF THE CRUCIFIXION in an arch-topped gilt frame, Christ in the center of the composition with the mocking inscription "I N R I" ("Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum") on a banner above him, the Virgin standing on the left and St. John on the right, the landscape behind them filled with hills and trees under a tessellated sky, SURROUNDED BY A FULL BORDER consisting of hairline vines terminating in gold bezants and ivy, colorful acanthus, strawberries, and flowers, the text and image further framed by a "U"-shaped bar of gold, pink, and blue extending the full height of the miniature. ◆Virgin's robe a little mottled and chipped, minor chipping elsewhere, borders with slight smudging to some of the hairline vines, small marginal stain, but, in all, in excellent condition, with wide margins, with the colors very bright, and the miniature well preserved. Opening the Hours of the Cross (a shorter text that is sometimes found in addition to the Hours of the Virgin), this touching miniature of the Crucifixion is richly painted and features a particularly emotional depiction of Christ, his head slightly bowed with an expression of pain. Blood flows freely from his wounds, partly merging with the orange in the sky and partly forming rivulets at the base of the cross. This exsanguination stands in contrast to the more typically restrained indications in other Crucifixion scenes and serves to emphasize the cruel suffering of the execution. His mother stands to the left in a blue cloak, hands knitted together and with a look of weary resignation on her face; to the right stands St. John, whose lips are slightly parted as he looks directly at the crucified Christ as if searching his face for signs of life. Our artist has made an unusual choice for the background, with the lower two thirds devoted to a naturalistic landscape with many hills and trees, and the sky entirely tessellated with squares of red, blue and gold. While the Virgin and St. John are both firmly situated within the earthy realm, the body of Christ occupies both spaces, perhaps emphasizing his dual nature as both human and divine. Stylistically, this leaf can be localized to the Franche-Comté region in eastern France, and is closely related (if not directly attributable) to an atelier specializing in Books of Hours made for the Use of Besançon and most likely situated in that city (see Avril and Reynaud, p. 197). The similarities are especially apparent in the figures' faces, which are slightly puffy in appearance and have distinct, slit-like eyes. As noted by Avril and Reynaud, the unnamed master of this atelier was deeply indebted to the Master of Morgan 293, a talented Burgundian illuminator active in the second quarter of the 15th century, whose name derives from a particularly lovely Book of Hours made for the Use of Besançon. In fact, there are certain consonant details between this miniature and the Crucifixion in the Morgan manuscript: Christ's position and physicality are nearly identical, as is the pattern of blood as it moves down the cross, and both artists create a division in the landscape, with the Morgan artist using gold rather than tessellation for his sky. Whoever the artist responsible for the present miniature, the work here is clearly accomplished, both quietly powerful and an excellent representation of a distinct regional style..

The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language was a monumental project, not just aimed at capturing the history of English poetry, but at its core explored what we mean by the poetic form (Kirsh). The book's immediate impact on British Victorians was significant, and it remains incredibly influential today (Kirsh). "Palgrave poetry is sincere, direct, and beautiful; it approximates song rather than speech; it deals with the most sweeping subjects-in particular, love, death, and nature-rather than the merely personal and local. Palgrave poetry is almost never urban, ironic, obscure, or verbally ambiguous" (Kirsh). The Austro-Hungarian -born, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) trained with binders in Stuttgart and in Vienna, before moving to Germany, Switzerland, France, and eventually settling London. He working for various shops before opening his own bindery in 1842. In the face of industrializing production Zaehnsdorf embraced craft and eventually gained recognition for his talent. He was known for his precise finish and elegant design. The firm would continue in his son John William's capable hands; it employed binders like Louis Genth, Roger de Coverly, and Sarah Prideaux. Family run until 1947, it was eventually acquired by Asprey of London in 1983 (Gertz). Fine.

Introductory remarks (by André Loor) in Dutch and English. Bound in cushioned faux leather, stamped in silver. From the introduction: The police band in Suriname cannot pride itself on being the oldest band in Suriname, nor even that it is very old, but it can take pride in having become an integral part of the social and cultural life in Surinamese society. The band has always been of great significance to the musical life in Suriname not only because of the weekly concerts they gave in The Park and on the former Government Square but also because of their repertoire. Photographer and artist Sara Blokland has followed the band and pictured in an untraditional way the history of the band and the people encountered by them.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: The German mystic Jacob Boehme disccourses at length a fundamental law of Magic: the law of signatures, which is the concept that every object in the three dimensional world has a hidden meaning, and moreover, how those signatures interact with each other.Mystical Christianity is at the root of Boehme's philosophy, but his beliefs differed from the prevalent Lutheran establishment of his time, causing him persecution the entirety of his life. Boehme's universe is one where a creative and destructive principle are continually in conflict, a perspective later cited by Nietzsche, Newton and Phillip K Dick as influential to their works. This is a modernized and revised edition for readers of the present generation. Archaic word forms and stilted language have been updated to flow with the language and syntax of our time. This volume also includes two additional writings by Jacob Boehme: Of the Supersensual Life: Two Dialogues between a Scholar or Disciple and his Master, and The Way From Darkness to True Illumination: A Discourse between a Soul Hungry and Thirsty and a Soul Enlightened.(Publisher).
