Description
New York, 1983–1987. Contents uniformly in near fine to fine condition.. Collection of 120 flyers and posters from New York’s hottest and most inventive nightclub, Area, during the mid-1980s. Although it was a disco, Area was a purely visual, happenings-based venue, where New York's art, music, design, fashion, and literary worlds collided; Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, or Jean-Michel Basquiat might be brushing up against Michael Forbes, David Byrne, or Georgio Armani, and Stephen Saban would be there to remind them what happened afterwards in his Details magazine column. Unlike other downtown clubs that focused on music or dancing, Area was driven by art and the scene that it engendered, through its theme nights, elaborate installations, and inventive flyers that seemed to embody Warhol's concept of business art. This archive includes Area's famously unconventional invitations, posters, articles, booklets, and other ephemera from the nightclub's short-lived, yet significant, four-year history. Features two cards enclosed in envelopes addressed to Richard Serra. A defining celebration of the creative hedonism of 1980s New York and a remarkable documentation of the “Bright Lights, Big City” years.

Description
Dresden and Leipzig: E. Pierson, 1893. 178 x 118 mm. (7 x 4 3/4"). 2 p.l., 266 pp. FINE EARLY 20TH CENTURY TAN PIGSKIN TOOLED IN BLIND BY OTTO DORFNER (signed "Dorfner" in pencil on rear flyleaf), covers with central lozenge and triangular cornerpieces filled with blind lattice-work, and outlined by intersecting lines, raised bands, olive brown morocco label, turn-ins with geometric blind tooling, brown patterned endpapers, all edges dyed brown. In a later plain paper dust jacket and patterned paper slipcase. With attractive floral and historiated headpieces throughout. Virtually pristine--even the dust wrapper and slipcase. This beautifully preserved binding, apparently from the binder's own estate, was executed by an artisan with the highest reputation within the German book world. The volume contains a collection of works by little-known poet Leo Guzek, comprised of original verse (mostly Romantic landscape sketches), along with translations from famous French, English, and Polish poets, including Byron, Milton, and Adam Mickiewicz. Otto Dorfner (1885-1955) taught at the School of Applied Arts in Weimar and at the Bauhaus workshop before founding his own school to teach binding. He was awarded a number of international prizes, and is particularly noted for his work with the Cranach Press. While this binding is unsigned, it is characteristic of the quality of Dorfner's craftsmanship: it was executed with the finest materials and shows highly skilled, precise tooling. The design is just as notable: the detailed latticework, enclosed within geometric frames, bears a marked resemblance to the radios of the first half of the 20th century. According to Christian Hesse Auctions, which sold this volume, it comes from Dorfner’s own estate, and it is easy to see why he might have held on to it--and kept it in its present impeccable condition..

Description
[Portland, Oregon: Oregon Equal Suffrage Association, 1906.] Letter dated May 16, 1906. These items encourage voters to support the 1906 women's suffrage ballot measure in Oregon. Women's suffrage appeared on the ballot in Oregon six times (in 1884, 1900, 1906, 1908, 1910, and 1912), which was more than any other state. The pamphlets are as follows: "Is it Just?" (which argues that women should have the right to vote if Black men did, and cites the success of equal suffrage in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming), "Testimony from Governors of the Four States in which Women Vote," and "Some Reasons Why Oregon Women Should Vote. Three pamphlets (3 x 6"), [4] pp. each; plus a typed letter (8 x 11"), [1] p. addressed to voters from Oregon Equal Suffrage Association President Abigail Scott Duniway and other Oregon suffrage leaders. Some creasing to letter, and some minor toning. Overall in fine condition. According to Kimberly Jensen's article in the Oregon Encyclopedia, the 1906 women's suffrage effort in Oregon was well-funded and enthusiastically backed by national suffrage groups, with the NAWSA (National American Woman Suffrage Association) contributing $18,000 to the effort and NAWSA President Anna Howard Shaw making an appearance in Oregon for the campaign. "Despite all these efforts, the 1906 campaign met with defeat," Jensen writes. "Liquor and business interests used the press, public relations, and dollars to oppose the measure." Conflicts between Abigail Scott Duniway and suffrage leaders also jeopardized the efforts of the movement. The measure failed with forty-four percent support in 1906 and failed again in 1908 and 1910. In 1912, most Oregon women finally gained the right to vote, though first-generation Asian immigrants (both male and female) and Native women were still ineligible for citizenship and could not vote. Duniway (1834 – 1915) was a writer and suffrage leader who was mentored by Susan B. Anthony. She helped negotiate the 1890 merger of two suffrage organizations to form the NAWSA; ran a human rights newspaper, The New Northwest, for sixteen years; and saw Oregon women gain the right to vote in 1912 after decades of her efforts alongside other suffragists.

Description
Boston: F.M. Porter Co, 1899. Quarto, stapled in wrappers (24 x 17.5 cm.), 80 pages; 1 plate. Illustrated, black & white and chromolithograph plate. Advertising. FIRST EDITION. The "Official catalog, musical program, list of exhibitors" for this fourth congress of members of the Boston Retail Grocers Association. The association was founded in 1881, and held its first food fair that year. Photographic portraits of the senior members of the Association are included, as is a description of Miss Nellie Dot Ranche of Chicago who was brought in for the occasion to run the Domestic Science Programs. It's interesting that the committee reached out to the Midwest at this moment when Cooking Schools in Boston were on the rise, and very visible. The copious advertising displays a range of categories of goods one would find in a grocery of the turn of the 19th century: coffee, cocoa, mustard, Havana cigars, root beer, Ceylon tea, French Coca Wine, virgin olive oil, nut meats, and salt as well as household goods, including: thread, collars, washing liquids, bluing, ink. Also represented are goods and services aimed at the grocers and retailers: boxes and bags, promotional printing, specialized contracting, refrigeration, etc. Tiny bit of spotting to green and gold-printed gray wrappers, otherwise fine. [OCLC locates just one copy (Winterthur)].

Binding is firm and sound. Book appears to be unread. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Recent concerns over environmental pollution and food quality degradation caused by the excessive use of chemicals have prompted scientists and policymakers to re-evaluate modern agricultural processes and search for alternatives that will aid in the production of healthy foods and the protection of our environment. Nature Farming and Microbial Applications summarizes current research in the field, highlighting unique practices such as the use of microbial inoculants and various alternatives to chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The principles of nature farming, as set forth by Japanese philosopher Mokichi Okada, must fulfill these requirements: producing safe and nutritious food that promotes good health providing economic and spiritual benefits to both producers and consumers being sustainable and easily practiced conserving and protecting the environment producing sufficient high-quality food for an expanding world population To this end, Nature Farming and Microbial Applications addresses issues of concern to organic farmers, including: soil fertility pest control effective microorganisms photosynthesis transpiration plant-water relations stress resistance of growing crops This well-referenced volume contains unique and original methods of modeling and analysis. It will be used again and again as a reference source for students and researchers.(Publisher).
