Description
1968. King, Martin Luther, Jr., original silver gelatin press photograph taken March 31, 1968 in Washington, D.C., documents his appearance at Washington National Cathedral to deliver the sermon "Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution," four days before his assassination in Memphis on April 4, 1968. The image shows King on the Cathedral grounds with Dean Francis B. Sayre, Jr. and a Capitol Police officer, situating the civil rights leader within a major Episcopal institution at a moment of national crisis marked by debates over civil rights, poverty, and the Vietnam War. Sayre, an outspoken supporter of the movement who had marched in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights march, invited King to preach what would become his final Sunday sermon, linking the pulpit of the National Cathedral to the broader moral and political struggle for racial justice. Silver gelatin press photograph, Washington, D.C., March 31, 1968. Image measures approximately 4.5 x 4 inches. King appears in a dark suit and tie; Sayre wears a suit with clerical collar. The two men stand outdoors on the Cathedral lawn accompanied by a uniformed Capitol Police officer. Red editorial markings appear in the margins and along the periphery of the image, indicating press handling and layout preparation. Created within days of King's assassination, the photograph captures the intersection of religious leadership and civil rights advocacy at the highest levels of American public life. Sayre, grandson of President Woodrow Wilson, used his position to denounce segregation, McCarthyism, poverty, and the Vietnam War, aligning the Cathedral with the movement's national moral critique. Minor yellow toning visible in portions of the background foliage; light press markings consistent with newsroom use; image remains sharp and clear. Overall very good condition. Historically proximate visual record of King's final public sermon and his alliance with religious leadership in Washington.

Description
1912. London: Eveleigh Nash, 1912. 2 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth. First Edition of this autobiographical work, which initially appeared serially in Ford Madox Ford's newly-founded "English Review." What is remarkable about Conrad's reminiscences is how clearly he employed fictional techniques worked out with Ford,... wherein the narrative intensity increases as the story develops. To achieve that, Conrad used a constantly interrupted narrative as a way of unsettling conventional sequences and, thereby, established anticipation of the next episode. Conrad needed a method that permitted intimacy, up to a certain point, and then withdrawal, when he had revealed enough... so his reminiscences would be matters of attack and retreat. [Karl] SOME REMINISCENCES is generally believed to have slightly preceded the American edition -- which, as with subsequent English editions, was titled A PERSONAL RECORD. Wise claimed that only 1,000 copies were printed (apparently including some bound by Bell as the colonial issue), but Nash records have not survived to substantiate this. This copy is in very good-plus condition (minor rubbing at the extremities, endpapers cracking, faint evidence of bookplate removal on the front paste-down). Cagle A15b.1.

Removed, unbound engraved uncolored map, 16" x 16." Some old tape repairs at folds and margins, a little creasing, top repair somewhat visible, normal aging; otherwise about good with a bright and clear impression.  This unusual made came from an 1866 issue of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London. It was contained in an article "The Pamir and the Sources of the Amu Daria by M. Veniukof. While mountain ranges and the Indus River clearly presented, there are some sizeable portions of "unknown country" on the map.

Zarephath, New Jersey: Pillar of Fire, 1920. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Boards soiled with scattered light spots, endpapers foxed, front hinge just beginning to weaken. 1920 Hard Cover. 138, [6] pp. Includes four colorized photographic plates, several dozen black-and-white photos, and a map of Yellowstone National Park, which was the first designated national park in the United States, established by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1872. The author, Alma Bridwell White, was founder of the Pillar of Fire Church in New Jersey, and the first woman bishop of the church. Though she was an advocate for feminism, she also had problematic ties to the Ku Klux Klan and bigotry in general, including public denouncement of the Roman Catholic Church, racial and religious minorities.
