Description
1980. [LGBTQ] [Public Health] [African American] Various authors and photographers. AIDS crisis archive, 1988 to 1995 documents medical education, community response, and lived experience during the HIV AIDS epidemic across the United States, the United Kingdom, and sub Saharan Africa. The material provides direct evidence of how governments, advocacy organizations, and affected communities addressed transmission, stigma, and care, with particular attention to pediatric patients, Black communities, and LGBTQ networks. Produced during a period of widespread public fear, evolving medical knowledge, and contested policy responses, the archive supports research into public health communication, grassroots activism, and the intersection of race, sexuality, and healthcare in the late twentieth century. United States, United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, and Uganda, 1988 to 1995. Archive of 11 items consisting of printed pamphlets, reports, poetry, and silver gelatin press photographs with captions and agency markings. [1] Foster, Geoff. The archive situates the AIDS epidemic within a global framework of medical response and social activism, linking federal policy, local education efforts, and grassroots initiatives to the lived experiences of affected populations. The inclusion of pediatric care facilities, international educational materials, and targeted outreach to Black and queer communities demonstrates the breadth of strategies employed to address the crisis. Press photography and printed texts together document both the human impact of the epidemic and the institutional efforts to manage it, providing a multifaceted record of public health, advocacy, and community resilience. Light handling wear and typical press markings; materials remain clean and legible. Overall very good to near fine condition. A concentrated primary source archive documenting the social, medical, and political dimensions of the AIDS epidemic across multiple communities and regions.

Archive includes: [1] The Complete Cannabis Cultivator informational pamphlet produced by Stone Kingdom Syndicate and attributed to "Mary Jane Superweed." San Rafael: Sunshine Manufacturing & Import Co., 1969. 16 pages. 8.5" x 5.5". Staple bound with light green softcover wrappers with orange text and graphic design of a woman in a sunhat and apron watering a plant. This pamphlet provides step by step instruction on the growth and maintenance of marijuana plants. A disclaimer on first page reads "The author, editor and publisher of this book do not wish to encourage the violation of any existing laws. This manual is printed for its educational value and as a humble addition to the total of mankind's knowledge." The pamphlet is facetiously dedicated to "our beloved leader Mr. R. M. Nixon without whose Mexican-American policy this book might not have been necessary." Printed on the inner front and back wrapper is Stone Kingdom's "Statement to the People" and printed on back cover is a list of pamphlets available for mail order from the publisher, including titles such as "D.M.T. Guide," "Supermothers Cooking with Grass", and "Herbal Aphrodisiacs." Pamplet is marked with pen and colored pencil on front and back cover and bears light discoloration and staining. Smith brings together essays and studies from fourteen contributers, each experts in their respective fields, on the social, pharmacological, and legal aspects of marijuana use. Sections include "Pharmacology and Classification," "The Issue of Marijuana Abuse," "Marijuana as a Social Issue", "The Issue of Marijuana Regulation", and "Marijuana as a Political Issue." Back cover reads "In this myth-destroying book, doctors, lawyers, sociologists, psychologists, and other professionals provide long-needed information on every aspect of marijuana and its use. Here are just a few conclusions taken from their well-documented studies: Marijuana is not as dangerous as is commonly believed. Current marijuana laws are excessively harsh. Marijuana use is directly related to the new life styles of 'turned on' American youth." Light wear at edges, overall very good condition. This archive brings together different perspectives on the emerging marijuana and psychedelic subculture in America in the 1970s. Overall good condition.

Description
1949. 1949. Four original ink wash paintings, signed and dated in red and stamped with red chop, on separate sheets each approximately 5 x 7.25 inches, each matted to 10 x 13 inches, captioned in the mat by the artist in black and red ink. Hint of foxing to the margins, mats a little toned, over all very good. ß Four paintings inspired by Muriel Rukeyser's poem "Orpheus." The four titles are: I. Cossack Fury II. Semina Scandali III. Treading out the Grapes of Wrath IV. Opera Belle Each plate additionally hand-titled "Fury from Rukeyser's Orpheus." It is possible the four abstract "Furies" were prepared as potential illustrations for the first edition of the poem, which was published by San Francisco's Centaur Press in December 1949. If so, then the publisher must have changed tack, as the book ultimately appeared with a single etching by Picasso. Harvey Wilder Bentley was born in San Francisco, worked from 1930 through 1933 at Porter Garnett s Laboratory Press at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and later settled in Berkeley where he established the Archetype Press, producing limited editions of finely printed books, broadsides, and scrolls. Highlights of the press included William Saroyan s A Native American (San Francisco: George Fields, 1938) and Ansel Adams Sierra Nevada: the John Muir Trail (1938). In addition to his printing activities, Wilder Bentley was a prolific poet, calligrapher, and brush artist. An exhibition of his brush drawings was held at the De Young Museum in San Francisco in May 1943.

Description
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown; [Joseph Mallet, Printer], 1820. Octavo (18 x 11 cm.), xxiv, 360 pages. Stated "Second Edition", published the same year as the first edition. One of the earliest culinary works on the chemistry of cooking and adulteration of food. In A Treatise on Adulterations German chemist Frederick Accum denounced the addition of chemical additives to food. The work marked the beginning of an awareness of the need for food safety oversight. Accum was the first person to tackle the subject and to reach a wide audience through his activities. His book found a wide audience and sold well, but was controversial at the time; it threatened established practices within the food processing industry, earning him enemies among the London food manufacturers. The treatise attempts to expose the 'fraudulent sophistications' of bread, beer, wine, tea, coffee, and more. The work is mainly concerned with adulterations of food, which it deems as morally wrong. Accum names specific companies and businesses he felt were violating the principles of food safety. Beyond food safety, Accum made significant contributions to the fields of gas lighting. ~ Some light foxing, a bit more to title-page, otherwise sound and clean. Rebound in full brown calf. Very good. Scarce; only one copy sold at auction in the last one hundred years. Few in institutional collections. [OCLC locates just three copies; Bitting page 2].

Description
Philadelphia: For the Author by H Hory, 1832. First Edition.. Contemporary leather backed boards.. A good copy; some foxing throughout; joints chafed; binding rubbed.. 8vo, 376 + [8] pages Zünd was a graduate of the Royal Austrian Veterinary School. A student of such notables as Bidl, Erdely, and Langenbacher. The book offered here is no simple summary of remedies. It is a complex medical tract on veterinary medicine and diseases of the horse. It is unlike other American books of the period because it is written from an informed scientific viewpoint. Prior to Zünd's tract such treatises were based on a folk medicine tradition that circulated as small pamphlets among the agricultural communities. It is doubtful that Zünd's informed and lengthy book had a wide audience (indicated by the fact that it was self-published) in the farming communities where traditional "remedies" would have been hard to supplant. The final 8 pages of text contain a German/English medical vocabulary, index to the text, a final index arranged by wound type for quick reference, and the errata. The book also bears the contemporary ownership signature of John L Meyer, Dec. 15, 1832. Tucher # 2221; S & S # 17203.

Description
New York: S. Tackaberry, 1864. Very good.. Carte de visite photograph, 3.25 x 2 inches, on a slightly larger printed mount. Minor soiling and spotting, light edge wear. One of a series of CDVs featuring recently freed slaves produced in 1863-64 as part of a fundraising effort in the American South. This image is noted as "No. 10" at the top of the verso. According to a notice printed on the verso: "The nett proceeds from the sale of these Photographs will be devoted to the education of colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen. Banks." The funds were used to establish schools for former slaves in southern Louisiana during the Union occupation of the region. The photograph was taken by Charles Paxson of New York, and copyrighted by S. Tackaberry in the Southern District of that state. The subject of the present photograph is Rosina Downs; she poses in a bonnet and jacket, with her arms crossed, looking left. A handful of photographs featuring Rosa were issued during the Civil War, including one in which she posed with another freed slave named Isaac White and yet another where she appeared with two other young women, Rebecca and Augusta. An entirely different image of Rosa, in which she looks directly into the camera, was also issued under the same title as the present photograph, but noted as "No. 1" at the top of the verso. According to the January 30, 1864 issue of Harper's Weekly: "Rosina Downs is not quite seven years old. She is a fair child, with a blonde complexion and silky hair. Her father is in the rebel army. She has one sister as white as herself and three brothers who are darker. Her mother, a bright mulatto, lives in New Orleans in a poor hut and has hard work to support her family." The present image was issued first in 1863 under the copyright of George Hanks with the photographer noted as M.H. Kimball, according to the photograph held by the Library of Congress. All versions of the photographs of Rosa seem to be exceedingly rare.

Boerhaave introduced the quantitative method to medicine, and is best known for relating symptoms to lesions. He was the first to isolate the chemical urea from urine. He was also the first physician to put thermometer measurements to clinical practice. His motto was Simplex sigillum veri: 'Simplicity is the sign of the truth.' He is often hailed as the "Dutch Hippocrates." (wikipedia).
