Description
Dillingen: Sebald Mayer, 1567. First German Edition. 208 x 160 mm. (8 1/4 x 6 1/4"). 26 p.l., 416 leaves.Translated by Nicolaus Hug. Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, inner medallion roll with Julius Caesar, Ovid, Cicero, and Virgil, outer roll with King David and Christ, raised bands, later paper label with manuscript title, original catch plates and anchor-plates, remains of thongs (two small contemporary patches to boards). With full-page woodcut of the Apocalypse showing the Queen of Heaven and the Beast. Title page printed in red and black, and with ink inscription in a 17th century hand: "Ex bibliotheca Wisensteig, de[?] 1626." VD16 R 3806. ◆Significant splaying to front board, small patch of worming to lower cover, pigskin a little soiled, one-inch closed tear to front free endpaper, mild foxing to title page and six other pages, other trivial defects, otherwise an excellent copy, quite clean and crisp internally, in a sturdy binding. Featuring a dramatic full-page woodcut of the Apocalypse, with the Queen of Heaven standing triumphant as Archangel Michael spears the Beast, this is Rupert of Deutz's account of the war between God and Satan (with God's assured victory), translated into German and presented for a Counter-Reformation audience. Rupert (ca. 1075 - ca. 1129) was Abbot of Deutz and a major figure in Medieval scriptural commentary. First appearing in Latin as "De Victoria Verbi Dei" in 1123-24 and printed in that form once in the 15th century, our work puts the cosmic battle in the context of a commentary on the 12 minor prophets, and how they prefigure the accounts of the end times in the New Testament. The Apocalypse was a popular theme among Catholic officials, who saw the Protestant Reformation as potentially world-ending; this fact would account for the printing of the present work in the 1560s. This edition was produced at Dillingen, a center of the Counter-Reformation in Germany, by Sebald Mayer (active 1540-76), whose workshop was devoted to Counter-Reformation publications; with his son Johann, they produced nearly 800 titles. This is a rare book: OCLC lists only six copies, all in Europe, and no copies have appeared at auction in 40 years..

Description
San Francisco, California, 1982. Very good +. 76 loose color 4" x 6" photographs. Very good plus: several very lightly soiled on versos, else near fine. This is a fantastic group of 76 photographs shot at a San Francisco Pride parade, formerly known as "Gay Freedom Day." 41 photos are focused on the parade's participants - costumed men and women marching and dancing in the streets, holding signs and waving flags. We see frolicking members of the Gay Freedom Day Marching Band, Twirling Corps and Tap Troupe - founded in 1978 and now known as the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, it was the first openly-gay musical organization in the world. Marchers hold banners for Lesbians Against Police Violence ("Fight Back In Large Numbers"), the Gay People's Union at Stanford and one simply reads, "I Am Gay And I Love You." There are paraders with signs reading "Troop 69" and "You're Weird" and a shot of a woman in a "Parents of Gays" t-shirt. We also get great views of onlookers and revelers, individually, in small groups and crowds. 30 of the photos show the fabulous parade floats, with such sponsors as the Pacific Coast Gay Rodeo Association, the Bisexual Center, Lesbian Gay Liberation Now and businesses like the Hothouse, Ram's Head and Peter Pan gay bars. Several photos show paraders on motorcycles, a few on horseback, and San Francisco Supervisor Richard Hongisto riding in a convertible. Hongisto had been the first San Francisco police sheriff to hire gay and lesbian deputies. He cofounded Officers for Justice, an organization primarily composed of gay and minority officers, served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1981 to 1991 and later as Chief of the SFPD. There is also a shot of a car with a flag for the "International Gay Olympics 1982." The Gay Games, an international sporting competition for LGBTQ+ athletes, was founded in San Francisco in 1982. Over 1,300 competitors from 170 cities took part in those first Games; the nine-day event attracted around 10,000 people to the city. The twelfth Gay Games will be hosted in Valencia, Spain, in 2026. A great group of vernacular photographs showing a celebrated LGBTQ+ event in San Francisco.

London: Published for the International Defence and Aid Fund by Christian Action Publications Ltd, 1970. First Edition. Slim octavo (21cm); stapled wrappers; 18pp. Some pinpoint wear along spine-fold, else a Fine copy. "This pamphlet does not attempt to deal with all aspects of the sale of arms to South Africa. It answers two popular fallacies: (a) that trade, investment and friendship are persuading the South African government to abandon apartheid; and (b) that economic forces inside South Africa are eroding apartheid and bringing about political changes leading to a democratic and just society" (from introduction).
