Description
14/02/1876. John Jenner Weir was an English amateur entomologist and ornithologist, as well as being a civil servant. He studied the relation between insects and birds, and is best known today for being one of the naturalists who corresponded with and provided important data to both Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. The 13th annual exhibition of canaries and British and foreign cage birds took place at the Crystal Palace from February 18-23, 1876. There were 1500 birds on exhibition there, and it was a major event. Weir intended to attend, and “The Correspondence of Charles Darwin” identifies the recipient and conjectures that he wrote to Darwin offering to accompany him to the exhibition. Weir also included information about nesting birds in his letter.Darwin responded, expressing gratitude for the nesting information but declining the invitation, saying the trip would be too exhausting for him.Autograph letter signed, on his letterhead, February 14, 1876, to Weir. “I find by dearly bought experience that such an exertion as going to Crystal Palace knocks me for several days, and therefore I cannot accept your kind offer. ""What you tell me about the nesting of birds is new to me."" Darwin was interested in nesting habits of birds, starting with his observation of the finches in the Galapagos. Weir had previously previously written Darwin on the nesting habits of starlings, so this was likely a follow up.Darwin letters are becoming increasingly scarce. This is our first in some time. That it is to one of his regular correspondents makes it all the more interesting.

Description
Washington DC: The White House, 1980. Limited Edition. Paper. Fine. In commemoration of the signing of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, from the White House, presented on December 2, 1980. These maps were presented at the White House signing ceremony to dignitaries in attendance.. Full-color map of the state of Alaska, measures 18" x 24". Commemorative statement on bottom left corner, with printed signature of President Jimmy Carter. A scarce piece, with only a handful of copies known on the public market. The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) was a controversial piece of legislation and remains the single largest expansion of protected lands in history. Signed after the presidential election of 1980, ANILCA protected 157 million acres of federal land in Alaska, doubling the size of the United States National Park System and tripling the size of the designated National Wilderness System. It created 10 new national parks in Alaska. The Act remains controversial but resulted in a boon to tourism for the state.

Description
Northeast US, Unknown year. Three photographs, two measuring 5 x 7 inches and one measuring 6 ½ x 8 ½ inches. All with Brown Brothers stamps verso. Portrait marked verso “Eugene V. Debs” with editorial overpainting recto. One other photograph marked verso “Debs speaking to workers”. Excellent contrast. Overall excellent to near fine.. Eugene Debs (1855–1926) was an American Socialist, trade unionist, and five-time presidential candidate of the Socialist Party of America—most famously in the 1920 election, when he ran from prison after being convicted of sedition. Debs had a long history with American railroads, starting as a boy when he worked on the Vandalia Railroad and soon after joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen. This work eventually turned him towards labor organizing, including establishing the American Railway Union; and a stint in prison for this organizing turned him towards socialism. Offered here are three photographs of Debs at railroad depots (it is unclear whether all three shots show the same station or not): one posed portrait and two of him addressing crowds. In one crowd shot, the Erie Railroad logo is visible on the car behind the rostrum. In the other, a number of men are carrying musical instruments. The time period and context of these photographs is not entirely clear, though Debs appears somewhat elderly. Of interest to labor historians, particularly of railroad history and Socialist organizing.

Description
48 pp. bound typescript with manuscript corrections, German language. 4to. Very good. Black paper wrappers with title texts and author in white ink. [1315] A fascinating original work, perhaps by an advanced student or young teacher, concerning the political pedagogy of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, founder of modern gymnastics, and his importance for German ethno-nationalism's spiritual and athletic preoccupations. The text is a chilling demonstration of the links between the sport of gymnastics and ideas of physical perfection and the purification of bodies that Nazis advocated. We believe it was never published. No record in OCLC.

First edition. 1927 SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY WITH TLS OF "ORGANICIST" AMERICAN BIOLOGIST'S PIONEERING STUDY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR. 8 3/4 inches tall hardcover, brown cloth binding, blindstamped rulings and publisher's initials to front cover, gilt title to spine, inscribed on front free endpaper, "G. Floyd Hammond/ Kind regards of/ Wm E. Ritter/ December 25, 1929" i-ix, 339 pp. LAID IN, typed letter to Ritter's nephew from Mary B. Ritter explaining the content of the book, a Christmas gift. Very good in a good+ dust jacket with closed tear in top of cover, in protective mylar sleeve. WILLIAM EMERSON RITTER (1856 – 1944) was an American biologist who founded the Marine Biological Association of San Diego (now Scripps Institution of Oceanography of UC San Diego). He was the first biologist to propose a theory of systems, and the originator of the term organicism for biological purposes. He spent a few summers at Marine Laboratories, and in 1891 was given a job teaching biology at the University of California in Berkeley. It was also in 1891 that he married a Berkeley physician, Mary Bennett. The couple spent part of their time on marine research, collecting blind goby fish in the ocean near Point Loma. In the fall of 1891, following the growing trend of science specialization, the science department was divided into four departments, and Ritter was appointed the chair of the new zoology department. He was familiar with the work being done at field research stations like the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole (1888), the Hopkins Marine Laboratory (1892), and the Puget Sound Biological Station, later known as the Friday Harbor Laboratories (1903). Ritter wanted to set up a permanent laboratory to study biology along the Pacific coast. In 1903, Ritter was introduced to newspaper magnate E.W. Scripps who, together with his half-sister, Ellen Browning Scripps, agreed to fund his work in San Diego. In early 1903, Ritter established a biological laboratory in the Hotel del Coronado's boathouse at Glorietta Bight. At the end of the year, the Marine Biological Association of San Diego was founded with Ritter as scientific director. In 1912, the Biological Association became a department within the University of California and was renamed The Scripps Institution for Biological Research, later the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. While the term "organicism" had been used before, Ritter was the first to use it for biological purposes and to create a theory of it. Organicism believed that life was an interrelationship between living things, living in a complex web. Today, organicism might be called systems theory. In 1918, Ritter wrote his organicist tome, The Unity of the Organism, and in 1927 he continued to explore human nature from a philosophically zoological point of view, in The Natural History of Our Conduct (offered here). This copy is inscribed to Ritter's nephew, G. Floyd Hammond, and as explained in the attached typed letter to Hammond by Ritter's wife Mary, a Christmas gift in 1929.

Description
JEDIDIAH MORSE (1761-1826). Morse was an American theologian and geographer. He helped establish Andover Theological Seminary in 1808. He was also the father of Samuel F. B. Morse, of telegraph fame.Letter. 3pg. 8 x 10 . 7th August 1818. Durham, NH. A letter addressed to Rev. Jedidiah Morse D.D. and signed by Jonathan Steele. Steele was writing on behalf of a Mr. Burt, a minister in Durham who had been censured by the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, of which Morse was Secretary. The letter reads: The long + severe illness of Mr. Burt, having in a measure disqualified him from writing, forces upon him the use of a friends penthe censure of his conductwas not the least painful to his feelings. The factsmust exclude the possibility of his attempting any kind of deception, whatever appearance they may have assumed I am instructed to say that his first directionwas to Dr. Pearson [Eliphalet Pearson (1752-1826), another founder of Andover Theological Seminary], who was, undoubtedly, better acquainted with the concern than any otherFrom my own acquaintance with Mr. Burt, I have been brought to believe him ambitious of avoiding to do wrongHe unquestionably construed the condition of the grant vote of your Societyto be the recorded groundfor the vote of money, leaving its fulfilment to after discretionary instructionsSuch assignment never having been made to himhe very naturally applied for the fruits of your acknowledged bountygreater service may be renderedby Mr. Burts continuing steadfast in one place until he has, with Divine Aid, established a Society and Churchhe has done every thing, in the power of man, among uswithout even dreaming of the necessity of crediting himself in a journal with missionary services. Should your Society, however, insist on the punctilious performance of the condition, it would seem less a matter of personal concern with Mr. Burt, than with you + our Societies. The letter is in good condition. The are minute tears along the mailing folds and margins, and a small hole on the third page from the sealing wax.
