Very good minus in good jacket.
Description
London: John Rodker, 1927. Very good minus in good jacket.. Third UK printing of Stein's masterpiece of modernism and first published book - stories of three working-class Baltimorean women. By the time her first book was completed, Stein was well educated, well-traveled, and well connected in the art world, sitting for a Picasso portrait in 1906 even as she composed THREE LIVES with self-consciously painterly technique. Though retrospectively classed as one of her most accessible works, the book was difficult for contemporaries, none of whom consented to publish it without being paid, and even the vanity press she settled on was hesitant to accept Stein's money without trying to correct her "pretty bad slips in grammar" (Beal). "I want to say frankly that I think you have written a very peculiar book and it will be hard thing to make people take it seriously," wrote Grafton publisher Frederick Hitchcock, who in 1909 hadn't seen anything yet. In later years James Weldon Johnson acknowledged "Melanchtha" as perhaps the first instance of a white author writing a "story of love" between Black characters with humanity and dignity; not to be outdone in praise for her own works by anyone, Stein herself called it "the first definite step away from the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century in literature." Scarce in the original dust jacket. Wyndham Lewis, who disliked publisher John Rodker sufficiently to caricature him in print and who wrote that "Gertrude Stein's prose-song is a cold, black, suet-pudding," was, rather remarkably, selectively excerpted from that same piece of criticism for this edition's jacket blurb. One must suppose it was done to irritate him. 7.25'' x 5''. Original slate grey boards stamped in black. Pale grey topstain. In original unclipped (25s.) dust jacket. False copyright statement to title page verso (Wilson A1e). 279, [1] pages. Light edgewear, a few scuff marks to front board, minor soil to top edge of text block. Offsetting to endpapers. Sunning and moderate chipping to jacket, with larger 2'' chip to heel of spine; long closed tears to jacket folds.

(title within decorative borders, engraved by J. Bourgeois), 1f. (dedication to Albert Libon by the composer), [1] (named cast list for the first performance and table of contents), 2-304 pp. Text in French. With vendor's handstamp to lower margin of title and printer's note to the lower margin of table of contents ("Paris, Imp. Fouquet... Baudon Gr."). Binding slightly worn, rubbed and bumped. Slightly browned; occasional light stainiing; many leaves with light to moderate foxing or mold, especially to margins. First Edition of the first version. Ratner II, p. 73. Le Timbre d'argent, to a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, was first performed at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on February 23, 1877. "Composed in 1864-5 for the Théâtre Lyrique, Paris, the opera was kept from the stage first by the theatre's bankruptcy, then by the Franco-Prussian War, and was not played until 1877. In the meantime Saint-Saëns had recomposed the dialogue to form a grand opera version, which was not played until 1913. The music is enormously fluent and versatile ... There are some bold scenic ideas, including a theatre seen from the back of the stage and some fanciful transformations. It seems no coincidence that the opera's 18 performances in 1877 exactly coincided with Offenbach's first concentrated labours on Les contes d'Hoffmann." Hugh Macdonald in Grove Music Online.

ALONZO LON POLING (1854-1948). Poling was a Deputy United States Marshal in Oklahoma.ALS. 1pg. August 18, 1897. Lone Wolf, Oklahoma Territory. An autograph letter signed Lon Poling. Poling wrote to Judge John Embry in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The letter mentions Polings indictment for shooting someone named Baker, which seems to have caused him problems when applying for a later position. Dear Sir and Friend: - I am making application for examination for rural carrier here and the enclosed printed slip is one of the questions I am required to answer and furnish papers as you see. I have secured the necessary abstract of court proceedings of my case in Chandler where I was tried for shooting Baker (the only time I was ever indicted) and would like a statement from you in accordance with part of printed slip which I have enclosed in parenthesis. Hoping you will give this your attention and thanking you in advance for the favor I remain, Yours very resp. Lon Poling. In good condition with extensive areas of light toning and a water stain on the lower right edge. The ink on Polings signature is faint.
