A remarkably fine copy in illustrated textured wrappers.
Description
San Jose, CA: Promethean Enterprises, 1969. A remarkably fine copy in illustrated textured wrappers.. First Edition. Slim quarto. "Comic fans are wondering why we failed to print a three page comparison of Spider-Man as portrayed by Steve Ditko and John Romita, and the customary 17 pages of ads. Underground fans are still looking for the social commentary and the 'Zap'-like humor... These 'disappointments' arise from the uniqueness of this publication. We feel that there is room in comic and underground fandom for a contributing and uniting force. Similarly, we feel that there is a long-neglected need for a magazine that can present to the general public samples of the fine art that appears in the two media." A bold editorial statement from this first issue of the fanzine Promethean Enterprises, introduced by savage cover art from Rick Griffin. Contents: [28] pages, with contributions from the likes of Griffin, Robert Crumb, Frank Franzetta, and George Metzger.

Description
Philadelphia, 1861. Broadside verse, 7-3/4" x 9-1/2." Forty-one rhymed couplets printed in two columns within an ornamental border. Dated, at the end, in type, "Philadelphia, December 5th, 1861." Very Good. "Written on the occasion of McClellan's replacement of Winfield Scott as General in Chief of the Army" [Williams College description]. "A poem in praise of Gen. John Ellis Wool" [Huntington]. The poem begins, "The love of country is a holy love, / Approved and smiled on by the God above. . ." The author is critical of the decision to choose McClellan. The correct choice was Wool, a career Army officer distinguished as Inspector-General of the Army, and for service in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. The oldest general on either side of the Civil War, the 77-year-old Wool commanded the Department of the East. "Choose for your Chieftain one who has been tried, / The place is Wool's, it is his legal right. . . We know not what will be McClellan's fate, / But we do know thou wilt be ever great." OCLC 64662122 [2- AAS, Williams], 960065926 [1- Huntington], 83346497 [1- NYS Lib.] as of March 2024. Not in Wolf.

Description
1972. [LGBTQ] [Feminism] This archive consists of two lesbian feminist publications, On Our Way and Cowrie, both of which document the voices, activism, and cultural expressions of the lesbian feminist movement of the early 1970s. Each measure 8.5" x 11". These periodicals reflect the intersection of lesbian identity and feminism, offering a radical critique of patriarchy and heterosexual norms while fostering a sense of community among women. Archive includes: [1] On Our Way - Lesbian Issue (May-June, year unspecified, (circa 1970s). A special issue of On Our Way, an Edmonton-based women's newspaper, dedicated to lesbian perspectives and struggles. Cover features a stark black and white illustration with the text: "We shall enjoy it as for him who finds fault, may silliness and sorrow take him!" Inside pages include an article titled Lesbian Feminism, which discusses the necessity of integrating lesbian identity with feminist activism. Additional content addresses themes of coming out, resistance to oppression, making space for lesbian voices, and community organizing. [2] Cowrie, Vol. 1, No. 3 (October 1973) A New York-based lesbian feminist journal, published by the Cowrie Collective, which includes contributors such as Helen Coyle, Liza Cowan, Alix Dobkin, and Robin Paden. Cover features a striking image of two women kissing, a bold statement of visibility for the time. Table of contents lists articles such as Coming Out at Work by Carol Hardin, Peanut Butter Meets the Dragon Lady by Alix Dobkin, and What the Well-Dressed Dyke Will Wear by Liza Cowan. Includes poetry contributions by Terri Hardin and Margery Meltzer. These two publications are valuable primary sources in the study of lesbian feminist history, reflecting the radical politics and cultural expressions of the era. They document the challenges of coming out, the fight for recognition in feminist spaces, and the resistance to heteronormative and patriarchal structures.
