Supporters of John Quincy Adams Condemn Andrew Jackson's "Bloody Deeds" in "Coffin Handbill"

Description
"He has ever been a man of 'blood and carnage.'" During the contentious election of 1828, a rematch pitting Andrew Jackson against incumbent John Quincy Adams, John Binns of Philadelphia issued this "coffin handbill" attacking Jackson for his orders to execute for desertion of militia and regular army soldiers during the War of 1812 and for his indiscriminate massacre of Native Americans during the Creek and Seminole Wars. [ANDREW JACKSON]. Broadsheet. "An Account of Some of the Bloody Deeds of General Jackson." [Philadelphia: John Binns, 1828]. 2 pp., 15½ x 25 in. This broadside begins with a resolution offered by Congressman John Sloane of Ohio, calling on the Secretary of War to provide all information on the court-martial and execution of six Tennessee militiamen under Jackson's order in December 1814. Next is a resolution by Congressman Thomas Whipple Jr. of New Hampshire that the soldiers were tried and executed "in contravention of their rights as citizens of the United States, and in derogation of the constitution and laws of the land." A row of six coffins follows, each naming one of the executed militiamen. The broadside continues with "some of the particulars of their execution, as we have them from an 'Eye Witness,' who appeals to Col. Russell, for the truth of every word he relates." It notes that most of the men had been hired as substitutes for three months, had fought bravely during that time, and "were all sure they could not be kept beyond the three months." The text of apoem, "Mournful Tragedy," follows. Below that are six more coffins, representing seven regular army soldiers executed near Nashville: "A short time before the execution of the militia-men, seven regular soldiers were shot near Nashville, by a band of regulars scarcely sufficient to guard the prisoners. They were confined in a house, and taken out and executed one at a time, there being scarcely enough men for the purpose of executing and guarding at the same moment…. Capital punishments in an army, are designed for example as well as for penalty; but in this case it was a transaction of horror to peaceful citizens: no army was there to witness the bloody tragedy. He has ever been a man of 'blood and carnage.'" The broadside continues, alleging that on the streets of Nashville, General Jackson assaulted a man named Samuel Jackson. When Samuel Jackson picked up a stone to defend himself, the General drew the sword from his cane, and "run it through Samuel Jackson's body, the sword entering his back and coming out his breast." Indicted by a grand jury, General Jackson convinced a petit jury that it had been an act of self-defense. "Gentle reader, it is for you to say, whether this man, who carries a sword cane, and is willing to run it through the body of any one who may presume to stand in his way, is a fit person to be President." A single coffin to the left refers to the execution in 1814 of eighteen-year-old John Woods, about whom Jackson "repeatedly vociferated, 'Shoot the damned rascal!'" Another block of text details the massacre of hundreds of Creeks at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, ending the Creek War of 1813-1814. "On the 27th day of March, 1814, General Jackson had found an Indian village, at the bend of the Tallapousie, about 1000 Indians, with their squaws and children, 'running about among their huts.' The following is an account of the sanguinary massacre which took place;--it is Gen. Jackson's own; and therefore must be received as sufficient evidence against himself. He says:—'DETERMINING TO EXTERMINATE them, I detached Gen. Coffee with the mounted, and nearly the whole of the Indian force, early on the morning of yesterday, to cross the river about two miles below the encampment, and to surround the bend in such a manner as that none of them should escape by attempting to cross the river.' The result he then details:--'Five hundred and fifty seven were left dead on the peninsula....'" The final four coffins on the page stand for the unwarranted deaths of four Seminole leaders during the First Seminole War in 1818. One of his subordinates lured the Seminoles onboard a boat by displaying a British flag, then hanged them. The bottom features a letter by Thomas Hart Benton, lieutenant colonel of the 39th Infantry and a U.S. Senator, written from Franklin, Tennessee, on September 10, 1813 [misprinted as 1818]. It describes a gun and knife fight between Jackson and his allies and Benton and his brother that left both Jackson and Benton wounded. Ten years later, Jackson from Tennessee and Benton from Missouri sat at adjacent desks in the U.S. Senate. Historical BackgroundEditor John Binns of Philadelphia issued this "coffin handbill" during the contentious election of 1828, in which Democratic candidate Andrew Jackson campaigned against incumbent John Quincy Adams. In 1824, Jackson received the most popular votes and the most electoral votes in a four-way race. Because no candidate received the necessary number of electoral votes, the U.S. House of Representatives had to decide the election, with the delegation from each state voting as a unit. According to Jackson, Adams stole the election through a "corrupt bargain" with Henry Clay, in which Clay threw his support to Adams and became Adams' Secretary of State. Binns produced at least twenty-seven different configurations (though several had identical text) of this handbill. The profusion of handbills led Jackson's supporters to create a parody with 184 coffins to represent "Sir. E. Packenham and 2500 Officers and Soldiers of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, who, on the Eighth of January, 1815, were condemned without even the benefits of a Drum Head Court Martial, and cruelly shot to death, by Andrew Jackson, A Sanguinary Military Chieftain." Despite the allegations of these "coffin handbills," Jackson won 56 percent of the popular vote and carried 15 states with 178 electoral votes to Adams' 9 states with 83 electoral votes. John Binns (1772-1860) was born in Dublin, Ireland. He moved with his brother to London and became involved with the London Corresponding Society, allied with the Society of United Irishmen. He was imprisoned several times for treason but was released as part of a general amnesty after two years in jail. He and his brother emigrated to Baltimore in 1801, and in March 1802, he began a newspaper in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. From 1807 to 1829, he edited the Democratic Press in Philadelphia. It became the leading newspaper in the state until 1824, when it opposed the election of Andrew Jackson. Binns published an autobiography in 1854. Condition: Professionally conserved.
