Description
London: Printed for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, etc., 1795. First edition. Quarto. xcv, 244 pp. Contemporary boards, rebacked. Small library stamp on title and verso, and on last page, a small ink smudge on title, previous owner's bookplate. Overall, a very good, large paper copy, totally uncut. A posthumously published collection of essays, mainly of scientific and philosophical nature. Smith had instructed his literary editors, Joseph Black and James Hutton, to destroy almost all of his manuscript material, amounting to some sixteen volumes. These essays were exempted because the editors, perceived them to "be part of a plan he had once formed for giving a connected history of the liberal sciences and elegant arts" even though Smith had to abandon the plan because it was too extensive. HBS 66518. $10,000.

Description
Paris: J B Bailliere, 1838. First Edition. Contemporary half leather.. Very good; some occasional spotting and toning; joints somewhat chafed.. 8vo, 1 - xviii, [1] - 678 pp.; II - [4], [1] - 864 pp.; III - Atlas - [4] pp. + 27 plates. One of the first systematic attempts to classify and describe the varieties of mental illness. "Esquirol coined the term monomania, a concept which anticipated the modern view of schizophrenia, and he was the first to distinguish hallucination from illusion. While at Salpêtrière, where he succeeded Pinel as chief physician, Esquirol introduced formal instruction in psychiatry and gained support for Pinel's humanitarian reform movements by lecturing throughout Europe ... Des maladies mentales ... served as a basic text in psychiatry for over fifty years." - Heirs of Hippocrates (citing a later edition). Esquirol was Pinel's most illustrious pupil. He wrote a series of articles for different journals between 1812-1822. These articles and notices, fully revised and supplied with more detail, constitute the text of the book offered here. He hoped that his studies, " ... may contribute to overcome prejudices, to dissipate errors, to throw light upon obscure points connected with mental diseases, and to make known truths, of useful application in the treatment and regimen ...." Hunter/MacAlpine pp. 731-738; G-M #4929; Norman #724.

London: J.W. Norie & Wilson, 1847. Map no binding. Very good. Nine insets of hydrographic detail: Bar of Moy, Cola Islands, Cork Harbour, Dumore, Galway Bay, The River Shannon, Slico Islands, Waterford Harbour, and Valentine Harbour. Four land profile charts: Appearance of the Land about the Entrance of Waterford Harbour, View of Cappoquin Mountains 3 Leagues from Shore, View from Brandon Hill in Kerry to the Skelligs Lighthouses, and Dursey Island to Cape Clear Lighthouse. 37 5/8" x 53" within the neat line; two sheet blueback nautical chart; lighthouses hand-colored in red and yellow; 4 geographical profile drawings at bottom right; cleaned, conserved, and infill to chart at areas of loss along bottom edge, some extending through the neat line into the title and the land profile charts, new blue back by Green Dragon Bindery, Shrewsbury, MA; very good minus. Only one located in the British Library at St. Pancras, London. J.S. Hobbs (1813-1874), a British chart maker and hydrographer, was elected to the Royal Geographical Society in 1848 and spent the majority of his professional life producing charts for Norie & Wilson in London. This chart was produced during The Great Famine or Potato Famine in Ireland (1845-1849), the worst year being 1847, a time that saw mass emigration of the Irish to England, Wales, Scotland, North America (both Canada and the United States), and to Australia. From a local Maine coastal barn, this uncommon nautical chart has been professionally conserved.

Description
New York: Trow, 1865. Original printed wrappers, stitched. 35, [1 blank] pp. Light tanning, Very Good. A "leading authority on water supplies, sanitation, oil refining, and assaying" [DAB], Chandler here studied how to diminish, "as far as possible, the bad effects of the impure water supplied to locomotives on the section of the New York Central Railroad between Syracuse and Rochester. The large quantities of sulphate of lime and of the carbonates of lime and magnesia give rise to incrustations," which cause "loss of heat and consequent waste of fuel, and at the same time cause an over-heating of the metal." Sabin says: "Contains analysis of waters at different places along the railroad." FIRST EDITION. Sabin 11854. Not in BRE, Eberstadt, Decker.

Philadelphia: J. Clarke, 1829. Stitched without wrappers, lightly dusted, with a couple of small institutional rubberstamps, short closed tear on title page [no loss]. pp xiv, [9]-34 [as issued]. Good+. The fourth edition, three having issued in 1828; its Preface, pp [iii]-xiv, is new. Carey seeks to demonstrate "the utter fallacy of the heartless, withering slang, that the wretchedness and sufferings of the poor are the result of their improvidence worthlessness and dissipation; that the shamefully reduced rate of female wages in general, is the parent of a large portion of that wretchedness and those sufferings; and that it places those females who depend on their needles, and live in their own apartments, in a situation almost too trying for human nature..." Description
3 volumes, 8vo, period leather with partial morocco lettering and numbering pieces, lettering mostly gone on thrid volume, illustrated with 4 folding copper engraved maps and a folding plate of Mexican hieroglyphics. Spines very rubbed, and covers also show some wear, hinges tender, and top cover of volume one is partially detached, corners showing, minor foxing and aging, some foxing of map of Mexico, maps with some mild offsetting, preface misbound with some leaves at the end of volume one; contents generally clean; about very good. William Robertson (1721-1793) was a highly respected Scottish historian, clergyman and writer. He wrote a number of pamphlets and shorter articles, including articles for the Edinburgh Review, but in 1759 he published his very successful and first major work, The History of Scotland. The current title was first published in 1777, and went through several editions. It proved to be another success for Robertson, and is considered his most interesting book. However, despite the considerable scholarship, his rather unsympathetic view of Native Americans shows he was a man of his times. He begins, not surprisingly, with the discovery of America, and spends a good deal of time with the Spanish conquest. Considerable information on the American Indian is provided, including facts about their customs and manners, numbers, and missionary efforts. The work includes folding maps of South America, Countries in the South Seas, Mexico and New Spain, and the Gulf of Mexico. ODNB.

Description
Leiden: Brill, 2004. First edition. Softcover. vg. Quarto. VI, 327, [1]pp. Original printed wrappers. Remarkable issue of The Review of Rabbinic Judaism, the first and only annual to focus upon Rabbinic Judaism in particular, publishes principal articles, essays on method and criticism, systematic debates, occasional notes, long book reviews, reviews of issues of scholarly journals, assessments of textbooks and instructional materials, and other media of academic discourse, scholarly and educational alike. The RRJ fills the gap in the study of Judaism, the religion, which is left by the prevailing division of Rabbinic Judaism among the standard historical periods (ancient, medieval, and modern) that in fact do not apply; and by the common treatment of the Judaism in bits and pieces (philosophy, mysticism, law homiletics, institutional history). Scholarship presently obscures the fundamental unity and continuity of Rabbinic Judaism from beginning to the present. No other annual in "Jewish studies" focuses upon the study of religion, let alone upon the single most important Judaism. Wrappers and interior in very good condition.

Description
Chicago: Playboy Press. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1978). First Edition. Hardcover. 0872235025 . [spine slightly turned, previous owner's florid signature and date/place of purchase on ffep, no other significant wear; jacket has a few small edge-tears, all repaired with small pieces of tape, with additional tape reinforcement provided at the spine ends]. "A Naughty & Notorious Story of the Roaring Twenties," somewhat of a novelized version of the romantic exploits of Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt. A resonably uncommon book that might be of little note except for the fact that its author was himself a member of one of New York's elite families, which (per the jacket blurb) gave him "firsthand access to the history which he used in writing this book." (In fact, it might be of little note anyway.) The author subsquently wrote a book about another American socialite/heiress, Barbara Hutton (who he hung around with for a time in the 1950s), and a memoir entitled "Rich Was Better." .
