Description
1827. [London: William Blake, 1827]. Printed in black ink on thick card. Very finely printed, in good condition though trimmed very close to the image at the left and right edges, once pasted down and thus with traces of mounting on the verso and pencil notes from an earlier collector (c. 1950?), image and plate mark exactly as per Essick 1DD. ß Blake s last engraving, executed for one of his closest friends. Blake inscribed the plate, lower right, with his name and age, A Δ 70. He may have sensed that 1827 could well be the last year of his life, but took pride in being capable of pursuing his art and craft to the end. Blake was in fact 69 when he died; perhaps he inscribed 70 on the Cumberland card in anticipation of working on it until he turned that age. At least when considered in retrospect, this most unusual inscription contributes to the elegiac and prophetic iconography of the design. The images invoke one of Blake s greatest themes the relationships between time and eternity. Although probably intended as a calling card, two books have been located with this card pasted in, both written by George Cumberland Jr. Thus it has on occasion been sold as a bookplate. Examples on card not in Cumberland s book are exceptionally rare and have been presumed to be of the earliest printing and possibly by Blake himself. All other impressions (on laid paper most often) are posthumous. Thirty-nine examples in all are known to Essick, not including examples now untraced, of which eight are on card, of which one is described as printed in green ink. Essick, The Separate Plates of William Blake, XXI, see entry 1DD for identical measurements (but not this copy). Bindman, Complete Graphic Works of Blake, 654.

Description
New York: Published by the N.Y. Workingmen's Democratic Republican Association, 1864. Folio broadside, 12-3/8" x 19." Light foxing and minor wear, Very Good. At the bottom: "Printed also for the Loyal Publication Society, 863 Broadway, N.Y. PLEASE POST THIS UP." This dramatic broadside, signed at the end in bold type by "A Democratic Workingman," urges his comrades to shun "A Traitor's Peace. . . Let the ballot-box tell the story of your patriotism, and your resolve not to be the 'white slaves' of traitors or their friends." Some printings are dated October 30, 1863. This one is undated. The Library of Congress has both; the Library Company has ours. Demonstrating the South's intransigence, the broadside quotes from an editorial in the "Richmond Enquirer of the 16th of October [1863]," which demands: "The North must yield all; we nothing. . . "SURELY SHALL WE MAKE THEM PAY OUR WAR DEBT THOUGH WE WRING IT OUT OF THEIR HEARTS." The editorial warns that the South will "fight till doomsday rather than yield one iota." "WORKINGMEN! The politicians who cry out for 'Peace,' and 'the Union as it was,' tell us that it is a very easy thing to settle the troubles between the North and the South." But the reality is far different: it means "the destruction of the Union-- the giving up of Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. Workingmen! These are the terms of peace to which you are invited by the 'peace' men." Workingmen must repudiate the Democrats and "vote for the party that stands by the government." Quarto (11 3/4" x 9 1/2") with new spine in six compartment with red label in gilt over original decorative blind stamped calf boards. (Ferguson 329; Sabin 104.633) First edition, first printing.Captain James Wilson brought the first British missionaries to Tahiti on ship Duff in 1797. Wilson was a deeply religious man. The missionaries he brought were from the London Missionary Society. There were thirty men, six women and three children. Wilson, on the Duff also explored and visited many islands in the Pacific, some of which had never had any recorded visit by a European. Among these the most important are Mangareva in the Gambier Islands and Pukarua in the Tuamotus. Duff paid a visit as a missionary ship to Tahiti during 1796, as a result, Missionary Society has first been established in Tahiti. Three years after the establishment, the directors of the Society appointed a committee to consider a suitable memorial for presentation to Wilson for his services in helping to establish the first mission in the South Seas.Wilson fought with the British army during the American War of independence and then served nine years with the East India company. While in India he was captured by Hyder Ali and, after a daring bid for escape, was imprisoned in the black hole of Seringapatam. After his release he continued service as a captain and, despite illness and further dangerous missions, accumulated sufficient sources to retire. throughout it all, Wilson remained fast in his irreligious opinions. While living in England with his niece, however, he was converted to an evangelical faith. he felt called to volunteer for missionary service after reading the Evangelical Magazine. Haweis did not know Wilson before receiving a letter volunteering his services in the Pacific. his skills and newfound devotion seemed perfectly suited to the situation, and Haweis saw him as "God's man." the Duff arrived at Tahiti on march 5, 1797. the settlement at Tahiti of twenty of the missionaries, five of them with wives, and two children gives further examples of the role of the missionary captain. A pattern of intercourse had already been established by other voyagers, according to which the captain of a vessel would take the leading role in meetings. It is therefore not surprising that the focus of the chapter describing the arrival is on meetings between significant island figures and Captain Wilson. For example, Manemane, a "high priest" Frommo'orea, sought Wilson as a tayo, or friend, not Jefferson, the president of the missionaries. The official account of the first mission appeared in 1799, under the lengthy title A missionary voyage to the southern Pacific Ocean, performed in the years 1796, 1797, 1798 in the ship Duff commanded by Captain James Wilson, compiled from the journals of the officers and the missionaries; and illustrated with maps, charts, and views drawn by Mr William Wilson....it was placed firmly within the tradition of the voyages of discovery by an introduction compiled by Samuel Great heed that described previous European contacts with the islands and an appendix "including details never before published of the natural and civil state of Otaheite." the main narrative was taken from Wilson's journal, with additions from his son and a journal kept by the missionaries during the period when the Duff was away from Tahiti at Tonga. Wilson dominated the events recorded in the narrative.Condition:Some offset toning from maps, occasional foxing, water mark to upper margin on some leaves, two leaves miss-bound at back, re-backed with contemporary blind stamped calf boards.

Description
Annawan [WI]: Unknown Prtr., 1860. Edition Unknown.. As issued.. A very good copy with some small marginal chipping; printed horizontally on a sheet 9 x 12 inches.. Broadside. Annawan was a farming community in Wisconsin. It no longer exists. The town was located near the present day city of Menonomie close to the border with Minnesota. This broadside was issued by local farmers calling for a public meeting (May 10, 1860) in response to the local railroad imposing a one cent a bushel tax on all grain shipped out of Annawan. This broadside is among the earliest artifacts of people vs. railroads and railroad rates in the northwestern territories. This conflict shifted to the courts (Peik vs. Chicago & Northwestern, 1876) culminating in cases into the late 1920s before the Supreme Court. Unlocated.

Joe DiMaggio played all thirteen seasons of his career with the New York Yankees and was selected as an All-Star thirteen times. With his exemplary hitting and fielding (he was nicknamed "The Yankee Clipper" because of how he sailed around the outfield) he helped power the Yankees to nine World Series titles. Outside of baseball, he was known for his high-profile marriage with Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio was one of the rare athletes that transcended his sport: his association with a bygone era of America was noted in Simon and Garfunkel's Grammy Award-winning song, "Mrs. Robinson." Boston legend Ted Williams said, "His career cannot be summed up in numbers and awards. It might sound corny, but he had a profound impact on the country.". Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover.
