Description
Somerset, PA: Friedrich Goeb, 1813. First Edition.. Original blind ruled calf over oak boards.. Good; joints & hinges cracked; front oak board has a vertical split; front cover nearly loose; some peripheral, marginal water stains; straps missing.. Large 4to, [4], 527, 66, [2], 169, [3] pp.. Accompanied by three 18th century printed hymns and a large inserted color Fraktur bookplate signed by the scribe. A unique copy of this bible from the Yaukey (Yocky) family. The Goeb printing of Luther's bible in Somerset is historic in itself; especially so given the generous format Goeb chose for his work. What makes this copy unique is the laid-in copies of three printed hymns; two from "Sisters" of the Ephrata Cloister but all originating at Snow Hill. Catherine Redelsberger and Barbara Schneeberger (for whose family farm the Snow Hill sanctuary was named) were among the earliest American women converts to Beissel's Seventh-Day Baptists. Andreas Schneeberger is represented here by a hymn printed at the Cloister on laid paper clearly watermarked CB in a "fluttering heart" (Gravell, #198). It is most likely that the Redelsberger hymn was also printed at the Cloister but there is no watermark. The three broadside printings are: 1] Der Schw. Catharina Redelsberger Glaubens-Lied. Unlocated. 2] Geistliches Trauer-Lied, gestellt von Schw. Barbara Schneeberger. Unlocated 3] Wurde abgesungen den 31ten August, 1793: Bey B. A. S. auf dem jährlichen Fest, an der Antitum. Printed at the Cloister. Attributed to Andreas Schneeberger. Shipton & Mooney #26144 with the entry taken from Seidensticker and no location provided. There apparently is one copy at HSP. These ephemeral publications were sold through western Pennsylvania by itinerant peddlers or after meetings (see Yoder pp. 42 - 44 barely noting any from the 18th century). Few survive. The three offered here must have been acquired by the Yaukey family 20 years before the Goeb bible was printed and retained for generations within the family. They are spotted and toned and irregularly trimmed. The Fraktur bookplate in the bible is large (285 x 230 mm). It is a geometric lettered design in four colors (green, yellow, red, brown) that is signed and dated: Samuel Jackson, Sept. 14, 1827. In all, an outstanding survival. S & S #27883; Gravell, #198.

Description
1818. Nashville: Printed and Sold by T.G. Bradford, 1818. Nashville: Printed and Sold by T.G. Bradford, 1818. Scarce Early Tennessee Formbook from a Pioneer Nashville Press [Tennessee]. Forms of Precedents, For the Use of Justices of the Peace, Sheriffs, Coroners, And Constables, In the State of Tennessee; And a Complete Practical Conveyancer; Containing the Most Useful and Necessary Precedents in Conveyancing, With the Forms of Almost Every Useful Instrument of Writing. Nashville: Printed and Sold by T.G. Bradford, 1818. 153, [8] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Recent period-style quarter imitation calf over cloth, spine lettered in gilt, renewed endpapers. Text block moderately browned as typical for Tennessee imprints of this era; light rubbing to extremities. Early ownership signatures and occasional contemporary annotations to endleaves, interior otherwise clean and well-preserved. A very good, sturdy copy of a rare frontier legal manual. $650. * This rare 1818 manual is a foundational document of the Tennessee legal system, published during a period when Nashville was the epicenter of the American "Old Southwest." First appearing in 1816, this second edition provided the essential procedural vocabulary for a state still defining its civil infrastructure. Because frontier Justices of the Peace were frequently laypeople rather than trained attorneys, Bradford's Forms functioned as the practical "law of the land," standardizing everything from the pursuit of felons to the complex transfer of land titles through its "Complete Practical Conveyancer." The volume is a significant specimen from the press of Thomas G. Bradford, a pioneer of the Trans-Appalachian book trade. Bradford was the nephew of John Bradford (the first printer in Kentucky) and took over Nashville's The Clarion in 1808. His imprints are highly prized by collectors of Southern Americana; as one of the few printers in the region, Bradford was instrumental in disseminating the statutes and legal forms that brought a semblance of order to the Tennessee wilderness. This work is remarkably scarce. OCLC WorldCat locates only one copy of the 1816 first edition (Library of Congress) and only one copy of this 1818 second edition (Harvard Law School). ISBN-13: 9781886363434; ISBN-10: 1886363439. Hardcover. New. $65.00 * One of the major works of the Virginian John Taylor of Caroline [1753-1824]. Little-known today, Taylor's work is of great significance in the political and intellectual history of the South and is essential for understanding the constitutional theories that Southerners asserted to justify secession in 1861. Construction Construed and Constitutions Vindicated was Taylor's response to a series of post-War of 1812 developments including John Marshall's Supreme Court decision in McCulloch v. Maryland, the widespread issuance of paper money by banks, proposals for a protective tariff, and the attempt to bar slavery from Missouri. Along with many other Southerners, Taylor feared that these and other measures were undermining the foundations of American republicanism. He saw them as the attempt of an "artificial capitalist sect" to corrupt the virtue of the American people and upset the proper constitutional balance between state and federal authority in favor of a centralized national government.
