Description
The Bronx, New York, 1945. Approximately 120 drawings with one short school essay and one photograph, captioned verso. Drawings generally measuring 9 x 12 inches. Conditions vary; drawings generally fairly delicate with damage to margins. Overall very good to excellent.. A collection of artworks produced by Joan Meredith Legg (1931–2012) and her future husband Adrian C. Winkelhoff (1924–2016) when they were children in the Bronx, about 1937 to 1945. Based on one caption, the two were likely students at P.S. 46. Subjects include indoor and outdoor scenes, many with New York City apartment blocks, with figures standing outside; advertisements and PSAs (for Fitch’s Shampoo and Hair Tonic, and for eating one’s fruits and veggies); historical topics such as pilgrims and Indigenous people, Thanksgiving scenes, and several drawings themed around China, with one of a man with a queue captioned on the verso “In the olde times in Chinia all Chiniamen wore pig tales and this Chinia man came from Chinia and got killed here”. There are animals and circus scenes, houses and boats, gardens, and snowmen. Legg also drew a series of geometric pattern designs, from floral and Christmas-themed to an “Indian” design, likely for a unit in school; and designs for a handkerchief, napkin, and several vases, including a brightly-colored vase with a figure in a sombrero and poncho resting under a cactus. Several drawings are potentially related to current events, such as a drawing of a factory and a series of two ships, one with an American flag and another flying a nonspecific red flag. Overall, the collection covers the children’s observations of their neighborhood’s apartment blocks and storefronts; their usual activities, including church, play, and domestic scenes; units in school; and experiences of advertising and PSAs. Of interest to researchers studying urban childhood, education, and children’s visual culture in late Depression- and World War II-era New York City.

Description
Seattle: Arts Resource Services, 1979. Very good. 8¼” x 10¾”. Perfect bound thin card wrappers. Pp. [8], 192. Very good: front wrapper partially detached and reinforced at the hinge with archival tape; both wrappers with some staining; some minor dogearring to leaves. This is a comprehensive directory documenting African Americans in the arts in the Seattle area circa 1979. From the preface: “To number the Black artists in the Seattle area at something less than a hundred would have been generous in 1972 . . . The recent growth and development of art activity in Seattle has been paralleled by the growth in numbers of artists and art activity in the Black community . . . Three hundred seventy-five artists were interviewed and somewhat less than two hundred are listed in this directory . . . We found artists actively pursuing nearly every facet of the fine and commercial arts. They are at all levels of development of their artistic careers and are into classical as well as pop or ethnic styles of their art. There are now three theatre companies, one ethnic dance company, two music schools . . . and more artists than ever.” One of the book's goals was to connect artists to artists, artists to employers and artists to resources. Further from the preface: “Our other goals were to expose the wealth of and indicate the magnitude of art activity in the Black community to the entire area . . . Most important, this directory is intended for use by businesses, agencies, governmental departments, schools, corporations, etc. We hope to stimulate them into thinking of ways in which artists can be employed and to hire them.” The directory of artists consumes a little over half the book, with genres broken up into eight categories: crafts, dancers, graphic artists, literary artists, musicians, photographers, theater artists and visual artists. At a minimum, each artist included a resume and some provided quotes. A couple dozen photographic images show some of the artists and their work including a couple of poems on an illustrated background. The second half of the book has six pages devoted to local arts organizations, with the rest of the book listing local, national and corporate resources. There's also a 15-page bibliography. An invaluable reference resource. OCLC locates eight copies.

London: Longman & Broderip No. 26 Cheapside & No. 13 Haymarket, 1795. Folio. Disbound. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), [i] (blank), 18, [i] (blank), 20-33, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved throughout. The third sonata in the set is a solo arrangement of a piano concerto; the cadenza in its first movement (partly unmeasured) is rendered in smaller notation; smaller notation is also employed in the score for alternate passages where the player's piano does not extend far enough into the extreme high register (i.e., the "additional Keys" referenced in the title). Minor soiling, foxing, and small stains to first and final leaves; final leaf detached. First Edition, later issue. Tyson p. 72. BUC p. 199. RISM C2994 and CC2994 (two copies in the U.S., at Yale and the University of Iowa). Clementi was an Italian-born English composer, keyboard player, teacher, music publisher, entrepreneur, and piano manufacturer. "[His] influence on following generations of pianists and piano composers is hard to overestimate. Beethoven's earlier keyboard writing seems unmistakably indebted to his music of the 1780s and 1790s. Clementi was the principal teacher of several leading pianists of the 1820s and 1830s, and he had more informal contacts with many others during their formative years, for example Herz, Meyerbeer, Dussek, and perhaps Hummel. His didactic works, especially the Introduction to the Art of Playing on the Piano Forte, the op.36 sonatinas, and the Gradus ad Parnassum, became staples in the education of pianists at all levels. Thus in several ways he impressed his stamp on piano playing and writing from about 1790 until far into the 19th century. And increasing numbers of modern editions and recordings of his works made 20th-century musicians and audiences aware once more of his virtues as a composer." Leon Plantinga, revised by Luca Lévi Sala in Grove Music Online.
