Description
Paris: Editions Le Terrain Vague, 1964. Original wraps. Very Good +. A major Association copy: INSCRIBED BY LOTTE EISNER TO KARL FREUND, THE LEGENDARY CINEMATOGRAPHER OF BOTH "METROPOLIS" (1927) AND "DRACULA" (1931). IN ADDITION TO PHOTOGRAPHING THESE 2 HIGH SPOTS OF EARLY CINEMA, FREUND ALSO DIRECTED "THE MUMMY" (1932) AND "MAD LOVE" (1935, STARRING PETER LORRE). THERE'S ALSO A NICE PROVENANCE TO THIS COPY, HAVING BELONGED TO PEPI AND HERBERT LUFT, BOTH CONCENTRATION CAMP SURVIVORS, AND HERBERT AN IMPORTANT FILM PRODUCER AND JOURNALIST, AND ULTIMATELY EXECUTIVE (VICE-PRESIDENT AND TREASURER OF GETTY PICTURES). A very solid copy to boot of the 1964 true 1st edition of Eisner's seminal biography of F.W. Murnau, a towering figure in German Expressionist cinema, best known for directing the films "Nosferatu", "Faust" and "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans". (Only 42 when he died {1888-1931}, Murnau still left an indelible mark on early film-making, which included the final 5 years of his life in Hollywood). This copy is a clean, well-preserved example of a fragile book. Bright and VG+ in its wonderful pictorial wrappers, with light creasing along the spine and the panel edges. A touch of very light wear at the spine ends and a very mild lean (cocking) to the binding. Pepi and Herbert Luft's ownership stamp appears at the foot of about 9 or 10 pages as well. Octavo, a generous sample of crisp black-and-white photos thruout. Text in French, with additional contributions by Robert Plumpe and Robert Herlth.

Description
London: George Allen & Co, 1912. First trade edition. Original cream-colored cloth. Front cover lettered in gilt with floral decorations in yellow, brown, and gray after a design by Detmold (signed E.J.D. at lower right), back cover with a similar floral decorations in yellow, brown, and gray, spine stamped and lettered in gilt. White endpapers with small black floral vignette, all edges uncut. Mild soiling to cloth, spine very slightly darkened, small stain at upper edge of rear cover. Otherwise a very good copy, internally crisp and clean. Partially unopened. Collating x, 181, [1, printer's imprint], [1, publisher's device], [1, blank] and including twenty mounted color plates (including frontispiece). Belgian poetic dramatist and essayist Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) "wrote in French, establishing himself as one of the leading figures in the symbolist movement with his play La Princesse Maleine (1889; English trans. 1892). In 1892 Pelléas et Mélisande appeared (trans. 1894), the work for which he is now chiefly remembered and the source of Debussy's opera of the same name (1902). He also achieved great contemporary popularity with L'Oiseau bleu (1908; The Blue Bird, 1909) and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1911. He drew heavily on traditions of romance and fairy tale, and the characteristic tone of much of his drama is one of doom-laden mystery and timeless melancholy. He also produced a number of essays of a philosophical nature, including La Vie des abeilles (1901; The Life of the Bee, 1901) and L'Intelligence des fleurs (1907; The Intelligence of Flowers, 1907)" (OCEL). It was fitting for the illustrator to take up this work. After the tragic death of his twin brother and collaborator, Edward Detmold concentrated his talents on books, primarily of flowers and animals: "Detmold's finest plates are those produced for The Fables of Aesop (1909), The Life of the Bee (1911), and Hours of Gladness (1912), the latter with texts after Maurice Maeterlinck, the Belgian poet, naturalist, and mystic...A painting of chrysanthemums, contained in Hours of Gladness, is a glorious acknowledgement of the artist's debt to William Morris and Burne-Jones" (Larkin). Description
Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey, 1768. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards with bookmark ribbon. A very good copy with minor foxing. First edition of a treatise on laughter published anonymously in 1768, and translated into English the following year. As laughter has always represented a mystery in the history of Western thought, Poinsinet de Sivry tries to find an answer to the following simple question: what makes man laugh? He starts by examining the works of the ancient Greek philosophers Socrates and Aristotle. Socrates pursues a definition of man as “ridiculous” without delving into the causes of laughter and Aristotle simply outlines what is ridiculous. The author proceeds to dissect other literary sources on the subject with a more specific focus. Using the comedies of Moliere as an example, he discusses what he considers arte the two principles of laughter, rational joy and craziness. Rational joy is based on the faculty that separates man from other animals; in fact animals feel joy but do not laugh. The principle of madness is based on the contrary argument that laughter escapes precisely when reason moves away and there is an eclipse of judgment. An important point is whether the reading of Molierre’s comedies produce a feeling of admiration and how that might related to laughter. The author concludes his work using the comic playwright Aristophane’s Plutus to analyze situations in which the causes of laughter are brought about by surprise (also confirming his love for theatre). Poinsinet de Sivry (1733-1804), a versatile French linguist and literary scholar, philologist and dramatist, was a member of the Société Royale des Sciences & Belles-Lettres de Lorraine. After having translated in verse works of the most prominent Greek poets, he devoted himself to theater, composing tragedies such as Briseis (1759) and Ajax (1762). In his anonymous satire La Berlue (1759) Poinsinet presents his point of view and critics to contemporary behaviors.
