Description
Firenze: Sansone Coen, 1836. First Italian Edition.. 19th cent. leather backed bds.. Fine.. 8vo, I: [4], (5)6 - 390, (3); II: [2], (3)4 - 391, (6) pp. + 21 lithographs of operations (with a notable example of plastic surgery) and pathology. One of the great encyclopaedias of military medicine by its leading 19th cent. practitioner. Larrey presented his decades of experience and practical knowledge in this book: he was one of the first to amputate at the hip-joint; the first to describe the therapeutic effect of maggots on wounds; gave the first description of 'trench foot'; invented the 'ambulance volante'; used advanced first-aid posts on the battlefield etc. It is a summation of his ideas on surgery and a developed exposition of his new techniques. There are sections dealing with all kinds of wounds, amputations, and operations (including the relatively new problems of reconstructive surgery). The plates are explicit and informative. See G - M #2160 & 4442 for the original French edition; Wangansteen, pp. 501-503; Wellcome III, p. 451.
